I’m in need of advice badly. I rescued a 4 wweek old kitten a week ago… I have no idea what I’m doin. Started off ok he was starting to walk good and play, eating good, etc. Then I switched to the powder kmr and He slept with me until two nights ago I got a heating pad and box set up for him. But the last two days he has only pooped once and it took some real work on my part. He is EXTREMELY gassy, has quit eating, I have started syringe/ force feeding him as informed by my vet. He no longer plays just sleeps I have to wake him for the feedings. … What could be wrong? Am I doin something wrong?

Mashala, you are doing nothing wrong. Powdered KMR tends to constipate newborn kittens. Get some goat’s milk found at the grocery store in the cold milk section, or the baking ailes in cans in condensed form. Dilute with water 1 to 1 if you buy it in the cans. It has good flora in it for his gut and is non constipating. Keep trying to get him to poop like you did before. Up in the search bar on this page, type in CHAOS’ GUIDE TO CONSTIPATION. It is full of helpful suggestions about constipation. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi there. I’d suggest probably taking him to the vet again. Also- have you tried goats milk? When I first got SP, I had her on powder KMR and it constipated her and she didn’t want to eat it at all. I put her on goats milk about three days after that and she loves it. She poops regularly and eats about 2tbsp at every feeding.

I usually dilute it 2tbsp water 2tbsp goats milk, cos SP’s bottles are 4tbsp each. Half and half.

Could this explain why he isn’t active and is sleeping all the time

Yes, warm it before feeding. I usually warm it up with hot water, till it feels about room temp. He could just be really tired or his belly hurts from the not eating and the constipation. Have you tried to triangle method for pooping? I get lots of poop when I do that. Sometimes wiping works just fine but if you haven’t seen poop, try the triangle method. I have to wake SP to eat as well, she likes to sleep a lot. Although sometimes she wakes me up to eat! Try keeping him on a schedule, too. I feed her every five hours. Depending on how much your kit is eating, though, I’d probably do every 3-4.

    Mashala,

Your little guy isn’t eating properly, hasn’t pooped in a couple of days and feels icky. I think that’s enough to make him want to sleep. HOWEVER, you may give him a dab of Karo Syrup or Honey. It could be that his blood sugar has dropped. Most instances of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in the kitten are the result of inadequate nutrition; either not enough or poor quality (undigestible) food. If he perks up then you know he needs better nutrition. I echo the advice about Goats’ milk

Also Mashala, your kitten is now around 5 weeks old and should be started on wet food. This may be some of the reason he isn’t moving much and mostly sleeping. I echo PG’s advice above on the karo syrup on the gums and ASAP, but you can get some wet food mixed with the goat’s milk and put it on the roof of his mouth to start him out. He will probably take to it pretty well at his age. You can also start him using the litter box too with low sides. Plain clay litter, unscented at first, and non clumping. When he gets a poop, put it in there and place him in the box, he will know what to do.

Yall are life savers, his right eye has something wrong it’s gunk in up a little and don’t open as much as the left eye suggestions?

Also I have a hard time with heat, wat temp should I keep it in the house? I’m also using the heaying pad in luckys bed.

I don’t think you need to worry too much about the household temperature, unless you are in some frigid place or some really hot place. His nest is really where he is, so that needs to be warm with no drafts. The goat’s milk has high levels of lysine, which will help with his gunky eye as he probably has a URI (upper respiratory infection) and you can also buy it in pill form and crush it and sprinkle it on his wet food when he’s eating solid food. I do that with all mine, and their sniffles and eyes cleared up. He will need to see a vet though eventually to be wormed and checked for other parasites and for the gunky eye. They can prescribe an ointment to put in the eye to clear it up and prevent losing it. Actually, he’s old enough now to see the vet and maybe get him started on some worming medication.

I read they like small spaces? So I have a box from the humane society from getting anther animal fixed so I’ve been using that as his bed with some towels and a stuffed bear that he loves snuggling up with, its vented and I usually leave the top cracked but I haven’t slept well cause I’ve slept with a fan for years, can I still do that or could the cool breeze in the room effect lucky? Sorry for all the questions.

Mashala I am so sorry. It happens to little kittens and there is no reason. Remember that little Lucky knew only love and comfort in his little short life. I know the feeling of a shattered heart, I have lost kittens too, for no reason. Wherever you are, know that I am sending prayers for your heart to heal and in time to remember him for the goodness he brought, instead of the pain of loss.
