Okay guys, so this might sound kind of silly.

My girlfriend and I have a seven week old kitten who during his first three weeks of life had a lot of health issues due to being born a week prematurely and abandoned by his mother. Since then he’s been great, no real concerns, but I’m just as worried now as I was then about FKS. At what age is that not a risk anymore? We’ve grown so close to our little guy and we don’t want to lose him, so I’m just looking for a little peace of mind. I’ve read in some places that it’s twelve weeks, whereas others I’ve read five. Does anyone know? Thanks (:

Most kittens that pass away with FKS are 5 weeks and below. However kittens that pass away up to 12 weeks can be diagnosed with FKS depending on the symptoms. The fact is that FKS comes from a host of causes, viral, physical deformities, bacterial, drugs or environmental poisons, even blood type mismatch like humans can have …and since kittens are so small it’s often hard to determine what issue caused their passing. The fact is that kittens that make it to the 6 week mark and beyond have a much greater chance of surviving than before that. So while it does happen beyond that mark, it is much more rare.

Now that being said there’s little reason to worry about it because unfortunately there is no treatment since it does come from so many issues. Don’t let it stress you out, your kitten is doing great, has made it well past the major cut off date, and is healthy and happy! Enjoy him 😀
