    Hello,

It was so nice to discover this great kitty site today, and I was happy to join the forum. I have not had a cat in about eight years, and a few months ago, I decided to adopt a kitten. I live in New York, and none of the shelters have kittens yet. Seems like an eternity to wait, now that I have made up my mind. I have everything ready for Winnie: litter box and litter, break-away collar, food and snacks, bed and lounge, balls and toys, cat sitter dvd, scratching post, window seat, soft paws, nail clippers, and her own kitten-proof room.

A few questions: I know to keep away from pet shops from what I’ve read online, and I don’t want a pure breed, so are there any other options to adopt a kitten besides shelters? I left my name and number with a local vet, and I also check Craigslist every day, and nothing.

Since I work from home and will spend plenty of time with my kitten, is it still better to adopt two cats rather than one? If so, should they be from the same litter? (My concern is that if there is a genetic problem, both would be susceptible, yet I would think littermates would be happy together.)

And finally, did you have a particular color/pattern of kitten/cat in mind and find such a kitty or did you connect with one that was not at all like you imagined?

I look forward to reading more posts, and I thank anyone who responds to mine.

Welcome, Joan. Congrats on the upcoming addition. I thought I’d address your question about a second kitten since I had a similar situation. I am home all day with my 2 sons and my husband works from home. So, when we adopted Emily, our first cat, (at age 6 months) she was an only cat and got lots of attention. She was happy that way, but adding more cats (we ended up with 3 total) added something special to her life that humans couldn’t add. Now, we didn’t really add the cats “for Emily.” We thought it was wisest to add them because we wanted them, not for her. But she just loves playing with her “brothers.” I think they keep each other more active and get out some of their extra energy with each other. (I still think it is important for the human to provide interactive play with wand type toys even when cats have each other to play with.) And the boy cats we have enjoy grooming each other. They all enjoy sleeping near each other and just hanging out together. Plus it adds to our enjoyment of the cats in a major way to see them interacting and playing together. It is a hoot!

As you can see, I’m a big fan of companions for cats. Littermates is a great idea. I would just choose two who already enjoy each other. Just like any two cats, littermates with very different personalities might not enjoy each others’ company.

With our first two cats, I had no color/pattern in mind. But I do love tabby stripes and was hoping for a tabby with our 3rd. I was open to any cat who won my heart and needed a good home (and had a compatible personality to go with the existing cats.) But we did end up with a stripy boy!

You could google animal rescues in your area and see if there are groups who work from foster homes rather than shelters. I wouldn’t hesitate to get a cat from a shelter, but there are some little advantages to a foster home I appreciate. The foster parent can tell you so much about the personality of the cats and knows which ones get along. You should have tons of kittens to choose from before long. Kitten season seems to be approaching where I live. Good luck.

Welcome to the purriest place on the internet. Are you firm on wanting a kitten (or two)? You might consider adopting two grown cats who came from the same home. The shelters have an easier time finding homes for kittens but older cats (even when they are just 12-16 months) have a much harder time finding homes.

I can tell you from experience, just because they are over a year old doesn’t mean they don’t play and do tons of cute things. It does mean, though, that they’ve had their shots and they have been neutered. They know how to use the litter box. They are active enough to make you laugh, but calm enough to be great cuddlers.

So far as two versus one, if you can afford two then that’s what you should get. We humans, as cat servants, can give them only so much. Another kitty friend can fill in the missing links.

Hi ECBROWN, and thank you for your welcome and your post. You make some good points, and I do know from experience with my mother/daughter team that watching kitties play together and even have their little “arguments” can be hilarious. I guess I’ll have to be patient, and when there are more kittens available, there will be a higher probablity that I’ll decide on two. I’m not worried about the little extra work with two cats, only about potential vet bills. I’ll look into fostered kittens, that’s a good idea!

Dear CHEETAHBOYSMOMMY, Thank you for your post. Funny it just showed up now; maybe I needed to refresh the screen. Anyway, I see this is another vote for two! I did consider an adult cat, but I decided on a kitten, who I will love as an adult cat, of course. : )

Hi Joan, I’m Joan too! My Leela is almost 4 years old and Comet is 21 months, both black cats. They are not exactly the most harmonious combo, but things just fell that way. My previous generation was Shaddo, a grey and white DSH, and Jiggs, a rescued Maine Coon. They were a year apart and lived to 17 and 16 years respectively. Learned about Shaddo just after losing our beloved and much too young black long hair Smokie. Then a year later my boss told me about free Maine Coons. I thought I would always have black cats, but Shaddo and Jiggs were a joyous generation of kitties. A duo of cats seems to suit us even though these 2 are a challenge!

Are you open to travel for a kitten/cat? Here in northern NJ, many shelters become overcrowded with kittens and unwanted cats.

    Good luck to you!

Kittens are a lot of fun. Regardless of what you pick, you will be giving a cat a home and so many of them never get homes. You may even find a mother/kitten combo.

Hey another Joan! I’m from Lindenhurst, Suffolk County. I like the Main Coons very much. I just saw an Animal Planet show, Too Cute, which featured them. (It was on Verizon, Video on Demand, Free programs under A for Animal Planet.) Funny that Leela and Comet are not “harmonious”, even though they live together. Can never tell, just like people! I’m told that the shelters in NY will start their “kitten season” in a few weeks, so I’ll just wait with the patience of a cat. Thank you for posting.

Yeah, vet bills can be a KILLER! Especially since our landlord threatened to evict us if we couldn’t cough up rent money for the past three months… He ended up relenting when he found out I just laid out over $1,000 in Alex’s bills! I haven’t found much help with insurance companies either; they usually manage to wriggle out of paying anything significant (I’ll never forget the time VPI sent me a check for $.18¢ …) I did, however (upon the advice of my little brother!) enroll my cats in a vet discount program called Pet Assure, I don’t save THAT much but I think it’s worth it, because the premiums are ridiculously lower than insurance .. I think there’s a similar sevice called United Pet Care .. maybe you should check into those.

I just came across your posts, Noras and Jeankit, and I wanted to say thank you for them, and thank you for the welcome. I hope you find a way out of any financial problems, Noras. These certainly are hard times. Still no kitty, but maybe the good that will come out of the long wait will be that I started to consider the possiblity of two kitties in the interim.

Have you checked out NYC Animal care and control? I always see urgent cats, including kittens posted on Facebook.

    http://www.nycacc.org/Locations.htm

There are locations in each borough so hopefully one will be convenient for you. I couldn’t search for adoptable animals because my screen is too small for the website I guess, but maybe you can. Or call.

Thanks Ladysky. Unfortunately, they are not on Long Island, and it is too far for me to go to Brooklyn or NY. I’ll keep trying!
