Hi guys,
Something I was pondering over, as I was looking up info on ideal nutrition for cats.
What seems obvious, is that (for those who are able) a raw meat diet, emulating what they would naturally eat, would be best. When I was discussing this with a friend, she was horrified.
A lot of people I know, (my friend included) make efforts to limit the meat they consume to treat meals, due to the financial cost and the impact meat production has on the environment. She would only ever feed her cat a dry food, as she feels it’s unethical to give “proper” meat to a cat or any animal. I’d never really thought about it before.
We started discussing agriculture, and the politics of food. The general idea, is for the sake of the globe, that people need to stop relying so heavily on meat in their diets. Simply because the way we produce it en masse is damaging to the planet. Also people are people…..so this is probably not going to happen for most developed nations.
Cats however, are not omnivores and need this diet for optimal health. A lot of concerned owners have shifted the cat food market towards higher quality cat foods. Looking at cat food labels, I discovered brands which boasted USDA certified, organic meat. Prime cuts of beef, chicken etc. Even ostrich and buffalo… I’d like to get to eat ostrich meat, dag nab it!
Is it right to give prime meat to animals, when humans struggle to afford such quality for themselves, and when increases in meat production can contribute to the destruction of our environment? Can we ignore that people are starving and even in the UK, folk turn to food banks and vegetarianism to fill their cupboards and bellies. But there’s a market for human quality meat cat food?
We are obligated as their owners to provide the best, and we want to, for their happiness and health. What are your thoughts guys?
