Question for all you TDKers that feed both wet and dry food to your furkids — is it possible that the combination can cause stomach problems akin to the issues that can arise when switching foods? Link still has diarrhea once a day (and only once a day, so far as I can tell) even though he’s been eating the same food for almost a month now, and has been getting a packet of FortiFlora in his evening meal everyday for almost three weeks. I’ve also noticed that he still has a gurgle-y belly and I think he’s got a bad case of gas. Plus I don’t really think he’s put on any weight — he doesn’t seem to be as interested in eating as Kain is, and will basically ignore his morning meal. I know I should probably take him to the vet, but before I spend $150, I thought I’d ask you all first.

I’m also wondering if he might have a food allergy or sensitivity. He’s on Wellness kitten food (wet) and Evo (dry) with are both very high protein foods if I read my labels correctly. For those of you with food sensitive cats, how did you figure out what your cats were sensitive to? Or is this something the vet needs to do?

LG, there are some problems that can only be diagnosed through either a vet visit or dietary process-of-elimination. For instance, lab work by a vet can help determine if the pancreas is working properly; if it’s not, all kinds of problems can occur, no matter how high-quality the food or the ingredients used. (Same with a genetic inability to produce a particular enzyme.)

As far as food allergy or sensitivity goes, an attentive, well-trained vet can prove invaluable as one runs through the various allergen-eliminating diets needed to help pin down a particular food sensitivity. You may find yourself needing to prepare special food, made with a very restricted set of ingredients, by hand, to help nail this problem down. That wouldn’t necessarily be needed long-term, though, depending upon the sensitivity.

I’d suggest taking food labels and a stool sample from Link in to the vet, along with a packet of FortiFlora. Explain everything that you’ve done so far, what the results have been, and ask what route the vet would recommend to try to nail down the root cause of Link’s digestive issues.

    Good luck!
