At the beginning of the book, Spencer is going through hard times because of a collapse in land/housing values. Do you see parallels to our current economic situation? Are there lessons to be learned from this town?

…. quickly calls library and asks if we can get a cat…. (just kidding)

Yes, I do see parrells between the tough economic times we’re experiencing now….. I think that’s one reason Dewey’s story is so appropriate for today, and such a hit….I think his story shows us what’s really important, and how we do need to draw together, and pitch in to help each other….. if we want our town, city, state or country to survive, we need to draw together!

So many parallels to what is happening now! Are there lessons to be learned? Absolutely but in this day and age of cynicism and a “You fix it for me” mentality, I don’t think that we can pull this off on a national level. On the other hand, the story of the flight that has come to be known as The Miracle on the Hudson was similar. We were starving for good news and for a hero. Spencer needed a hero and along came Dewey.

I think that the lesson to be learned is that, although times can be hard and people can fall on difficult circumstances, if we all work together, we can make this a better country and a better world.

    Now – we need a special cat…..

WWM hit it on the head…we need to pull together as a country, one community at a time and we can get out of this mess…

Perhaps this book should be forwarded to Washington!

This question reminds me of the saying that we are the person we’ve been waiting for. We need to recognize that we are all “related” and part of a community–that one person’s trouble is our trouble; one person’s child is our child, etc. We should do more to notice who needs help or just a friendly smile.

I think that it shows hard times come and go. We have ups and downs in life. This town was having problems like the country is now, the country has had them before KW is right we have to recognize that we need to be part of the solution and not look to the government for all the answers.
