    Just felt my kittens gums/mouth and it felt dry. His next feeding isn’t for an hour can I give him a little straight pedialyte? If so how much? He is 11 days old and weighed like 6oz last night

    Hi EmmaLee, please try the tent test to ascertain if your kitten is dehydrated.
    The tent test:
    Pick up a good pinch of kitten’s skin at the neck and let go.If it snaps back immediately, she’s hydrated okay. If it takes a little time to go back down, or, worse, it stays up in a ‘tent’ shape, she needs fluids, such as pedialyte.

    Home-made pedialyte:
    Pedialyte:
    * Pedialyte formula (from World Health Organization)…no preservatives so short life-span
    * 1 cup water (boiled then cooled)
    * 2 tsp sugar
    * 1/8 tsp salt
    * 1/8 tsp baking soda
    * (this Pedialyte formula gives needed electrolytes & some sugar for energy)
    Combine all ingredients and warm slightly.
    Make new after 24 hours.

    If in any doubt take your kitten to the vet for a check up.

    I can’t get to a vet until tomorrow. So in the meantime how much pedialyte should I mix with his formula? And can I feed it to him just straight, with no formula mixed in? I have store bought unflavored pedialyte.

    Do the tent test Emma to see if your kitten is dehydrated. You said in a previous post that you had your kitten to the vet and they told you he was not dehydrated. So unless he has been vomiting and had severe diarrhea from when you saw the vet, he probably isn’t dehydrated. Look at the links we posted to give you the approximate amounts of milk he should be getting for his age.

    We feed him about a tsp and a 1/4 each feeding, which is a little less than what he should eat I guess, so we will up that a bit. But his last two feedings I have used almost 1/2tsp pedialyte mixed with 3/4tsp formula and since then his diarrhea has been even more watery. Could pedialyte make it worse? It’s hard to do the tent test because he’s fluffy and a little wiggle worm and I can’t tell how fast his skin goes back down. It appears to go back down kind of slow, but not really slow. But his gums were dry when I felt them.

    Just feed him the goat’s milk without the pedialyte for now.
