Well, the last 48 hours have been a mixed bag, to say the least. I had noticed on Monday that my big tub of goo, Leo, had been a bit lethargic but by Wed. I noticed that he was eating very little. So I scooped him up and took him to the vet (less than 6 minutes away). I happened to look at him to pat him, just before pulling out of the driveway and noticed he had peed in the box. Well, when I got him to the vet we put him on a table in the examining room and when I put in paper towels to sop up the excess, I realized it was all bloody. Then when I started to move him, I noticed that his chest was all bloody and that the fluid in his box was full of something like pus (which is what it turned out to be. Well, that got everyone jumping. The techs hustled Leo to the back where they do all sorts of things like ekgs, blood tests, etc. and shaved his chest. When they brought him back they showed me the most enormous hole I have ever seen.

To make a long story short, he had a spectacular abscess, a temperature of 106 and a wound draining what seemed like gallons. I asked them to keep him overnight, since they could keep him quiet and confined. They had gotten his fever down by morning which made all the difference in the world to him. They had also bathed him which made all the difference to me. Since he is hard to medicate, they gave him an antibiotic shot that lasts for 7 days!! (Isn’t science wonderful?)I also have to squirt some stuff on the wound several times a day that is supposed to be some sort of miracle medication. Thankfully, he doesn’t mind.

Now that is ultimately, good news, because I am so thankful my baby is better. But that is not the end of it. I popped a small Butterball Turkey in the oven this afternoon and prepared a veritable feast. However, the turkey was horrible. How can a turkey be horrible? I love turkey but even the top most breast meat tasted more like dark meat than anything else. Had the turkey gone bad? All I know is that my Christmas feast was ruined. Thankfully, there was plenty of food but still.

OK. Leo is much better, everyone had enough to eat… maybe it wasn’t so bad after all. Plus, I am in the south so all I had to contend with was rain and it had stopped by this a.m.

I guess, I have to face it. I am a whiner.

I’m glad your baby is doing better. Our turkey was definitely bad so we ended up with fried chicken from Royal Farms store….

    I’m glad Leo is better,wow!

We bought a turkey breast and it was bad too,not spoiled but very tough and didn’t taste right. We returned it since we hardly ate any. What’s up with turkeys?

Oh, Lily – I am so sorry! But so happy that Leo is on the mend!

Your story brought to mind an Easter dinner that our family had years ago. It was Mr. WWM’s grandmother, his parents and his sister and her husband. We were actually having dinner at my sister-in-law’s and so she was responsible for the main event, ham in this case, and the rest of us brought everything else. Well, it came time to cut the ham, which looked lovely, but when we cut into it there was an enormous, and very foul, abscess. We had no idea what to do as the grandmother was sitting there waiting. So… we cooked hot dogs, served them with raisin sauce and all of the other fixings. I’m sure that it might have crossed her mind as to “why are we having hot dogs”, but we were in the Army then, and very poor, so maybe she chalked it up to that. It has become a family legend and we all laugh with every retelling!

It’s only turkey. Memories last forever!

Lily how scary that would have been, but Leo is going to heal and that is the best news!!! I haven’t had a bad turkey, but I sure have had a dry one. Don’t let the turkey mare the celebration!! Merry Christmas Lily!

You might want to drink a bit of apple cider vinegar if you are not yet sick (in case the turkey WAS bad). That’s an old folk remedy for preventing or lessening food poisoning. I don’t know if it truly works, but I’ve seen it quite a bit as a remedy.

I feel fine (It has been about 5 hours.) My only experience with food poisoning was years ago and it came on within about 2 hours of eating the bad food. So I think I am safe. I hope so. If there is anything worse than food poisoning, I can’t think what. Yikes!

Thanks all for letting me vent. Partly it was brought on by just what I described but I was also feeling really bad because I had gotten a phone call from one of my sisters a couple of hours earlier, who informed me that our ex-brother-in-law had died late last week of lung cancer. I feel really bad because he was basically alone in the last years of his life. He was an alcoholic, and had some mental problems as well. But I have always liked him. He had a kind heart and nowhere was this more evident than when my mother was dying many years ago (oddly, also of lung cancer). He busted his butt cooking for her, visiting her, and trying to make her last days comfortable. I can never ever forget that.

Buttercup, did you really return the turkey??! I do intend to get my money back but it hadn’t occurred to me to return the remains. The thought of whipping it out of a bag and putting on the courtesy counter makes me snicker… I am surprised and encouraged to hear that this is not the universe punishing me, but that it has happened before.

WillowandWindismom– Franks with raisin sauce!!? Now that is a truly great story.

Poor Leo. Good thing the vet is so close by and what a blessing modern medicines are. Very sorry about your turkey Lily. I decided to do shrimp alfredo with linguini and it tasted great. The dissappoinment was the vanilla Hagen Dazs for dessert. I haven’t served vanilla Hagen Dazs with strawberries since last Christmas and I notice the ice-cream is much creamier and milk flavored. It doesn’t have the rich vanilla bean taste anymore. I’ll just use store brand vanilla next time!

Lily food poisoning can take 12-72 hours for symptoms to show.

Buttercup, love the picture of the lick-kitty on the wall, who is the one licking it?

Lily, thank goodness for the vet and his/her staff taking care of Leo so quickly and that he is on the mend.

I can vouch for the food poisoning timing. Went to the ER a week ago with a case of food poisoning about 8 hours after I ate the culprit. Worst stomach pain I’ve ever had! Took an entire week of a bland diet to get rid of the effects. Hope you can avoid it!
