I have a Rival Crockpot from years ago. The insert does come out and it’s a nice size.

I am also afraid to leave it on when I am not home. I use it when I am home instead. I unplug everything that’s not in use and never run the washer, dryer, etc. when I’m not home. 🙂

Wheat germ can also be added to a meatloaf. Yum!

Sorry you have the celiac thing, Lisa…. How sad. My friend in NJ has a husband who has that too. He was so sick for the longest time until he found out. They make special pasta and such for that. He also ate cheeze curls and things that had only corn or rice in them. Rice crackers too. I even eat those… yummy!

Thanks Lisa! I will have to try that recipe. Yum.

WWM, my insert for my crock pot does remove so I stick it in the dishwasher and all is good.

I dont have many recipes but you can have what I use 🙂

Strange as it may sound, I’m happy to have learned about the celiac thing!! Life got soooooo much better in just a few days!! It was like being let out of a cage that I didn’t know I was in! And, since I wasn’t a bread person to start with, but a natural carnivore, the only thing I really miss is cookies. And rice crackers were my favorite crackers already.

Hate to say this but….anyone looking for a Crockpot should try estate sales. I go to estate sales every Saturday to buy Bibles/Korans/Books of Morman/Whatevers for the homeless outreach at my church (Episcopalian, we don’t care what you are, if you need it, we’ll get it for you). And at every sale there’s at least one Crock-Pot, sometimes two.

I still have the old cookbook that came with my CrockPot!! If you could see the book, you’d know how old I really am!! EEEEEEKKKKK!

lisaeylau, do you have a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods (they are too expensive though) near you? I belive they both carry gluten free products including cookies.

Yes, have a huge Whole Foods right down the road, and Austin, AKA Free-Spirit Heaven, even has a gluten-free restaurant AND an entire gluten free grocery store!! I haven’t been to either of the gluten free specialty places. So far, everything I’ve needed has been at my regular store.

Whole Foods started in Austin as a tiny hippie grocery. I remember it well. There wasn’t room in it for ten shoppers at once and push carts were out of the question. It was the first place I ever saw the word “organic” applied to food, and one could ask what in the world I was doing in there to start with and the answer would be….looking for schmaltz to make chopped liver for passover. Yes, I did just say I am Episcopal. My best friend is Jewish, I make that smelly, squishy pate for her–a true labor of love. I finally had to buy the schmaltz at a restaurant. That was a loooooooon time ago. Once again, I’ve spilled my age.

Azdebra, I hope this meatloaf works for you! That’s why I mentioned it…I’ve never made it and had it come out nice before, either….it’s always fallen short of….I don’t know…something. I really will try it again in the next week or so and confirm it wasn’t a fluke. Or, if you do it, let me know. Remember, these measures are guesses, because when I made it, I was just watching American Idol and slinging bottles!

I just got a crock pot for Christmas. My aunt gave me a best buy gift card and I was trying to think of what to buy when I decided I wanted a crock pot. Now that I have a crock pot, I use it at least once a week and when I was sick I was able to make my two all-time favorite comfort foods – Chicken and Dumplings and Potato Soup.

I also found a lasagna recipe that was very similar to the one cricketsmama

posted only it used ricotta instead of cottage cheese. It came out wonderfully so I’ll bet the one cricketsmama posted is also wonderful. I’ll have to try it when I get into the mood for lasagna again.

Anyone checking back on the meatloaf recipe? I tried it again, and it re-created almost to a T. Of course, use it as a starting point and play with adding/subtracting your own favorite stuff.

owlwatcher, do you have the recipe for the Chicken & Dumplings? I don’t like them but I have a friend who loves them and I would make it for her. Also the Potato Soup, now that one I would love.

Lisa, no I haven’t tried the meatloaf one yet, actually can’t remember where I put the recipe (yes disorganized is my middle name of late).

I’ve done the crockpot lasagna on low, all day, and it was absolute heaven when I got home.

You might want to try AllRecipes.com for some other crockpot recipes; someone told me they put a special section in there for crockpots, and I am dying to see a good brownie recipe for crock pots. They use very little electricity, they never seem to break down, and the kitchen stays cool.

As soon as you figure out brownies in a slow cooker, pleasepleaseplease post it. The combination of brownies with vanilla ice cream is the ultimate guilty pleasure for me. And thanks!

Emma this is as close as I can get:

Crockpot Raspberry Fudgey Brownies in a Jar

    1/2 cup margarine or butter

    2 ounces unsweetened chocolate

    2 eggs

    3/4 cup sugar

    1/3 cup seedless raspberry jam

    1 teaspoon vanilla

    3/4 cup all-purpose flour

    1/4 teaspoon baking powder

    vanilla ice cream — optional

chocolate ice cream topping — optional

    fresh raspberries — optional

Generously grease two 1-pint straight-sided, wide mouth canning jars. Flour the greased jars; set aside.

In a saucepan melt margarine or butter and chocolate over low heat. Remove from heat, Stir in eggs, sugar, jam , and vanilla. Using a spoon, beat lightly just until combines. Stir in flour and baking powder.

Pour batter into prepared jars. Cover jars tightly with greased foil, greased side down. Place jars in crockpot. Pour 1 cup water around jars.

Cover; cook on high for 3 to 3 1/2 hours or until a toothpick inserted near centers of brownie rolls comes out clean. Remove jars from crockpot; cool for 10 minutes.

Using a metal spatula, loosen brownies from sides of jars. Carefully remove rolls from jars. Place rolls on their sides on a wire rack; cool completely. To serve, cut each roll into 6 slices. If desired, serve with ice cream, ice cream topping, and fresh raspberries.

    Here’s one for you, Emma!

    1/4 tsp salt

    1/3 c milk

    1 egg yolk

    1/3 brown sugar

    1 1/2 c hot water

whipped cream or ice cream for later

in your crockpot spray with cooking spray whisk flour and baking powder in bowl set aside. Melt butter and choc together in micro or on stove top. Whisk in 2/3 cup sugar, 3Tbsp of cocoa, vanilla, salt, milk, and egg yolk. Add flour mixture and mix thoroughly. Pour into crockpot and spread evenly. In medium bowl whisk together remaining sugar, cocoa, brown sugar and hot water. Stir till sugar is dissolved slowly pour over batter in crockpot. Cook on high or 1 1/4 to 2 1/4 hours. It will pull away from the sides.

The brownie will be moist and floating on a layer of molten chocolate. When its done take off the lid and let cool or 25 minutes serve with ice cream or whipped cream.

    Or….

    Crockpot brownies with pecans.

    INGREDIENTS:

    1 cup chopped pecans

1 family-size package brownie mix (about 20 to 23 ounces), along with ingredients for preparation

    PREPARATION:

Pour melted butter into 2-pound coffee can; swirl to coat bottom and sides well. Sprinkle with half of the chopped pecans. Mix brownies according to the package directions, stirring in remaining chopped pecans.

Pour batter into the coffee can. Place can in slow cooker. Cover top of can with 8 paper towels. Cover and bake on HIGH for 3 hours. Do not check or remove cover until 45 to 60 minutes. Remove can; discard paper towels. Let stand 5 minutes. Unmold and serve while warm, if desired

Oh my Lord, I just gained 16 pounds while reading three recipes and drinking one cup of coffee!

Thanks so much, these recipes are FABULOUS, and I will be trying them out this summer. Every Christmas I throw a Ladies’ Christmas Tea and invite around 50 dear friends. Somehow, I think these batches of brownies are going to be the centerpiece of the event, and I can imagine 50 pairs of ravenous eyes gazing at those chocolate confections on the dining room table!
