Works for me!
The best example in my life was the boss Hubby had in the military. He was a Master Sgt. anxious to become a Senior Master Sgt. (or SMS).
Every 6 mos., when the list came out and his name wasn’t on it, he was insufferable and took it out on the whole shop. Finally he came within 2 years of retirement and decided to give up his dream and head off from Hawaii to Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona (“the place they send old personnel and aircraft off to die” was the unofficial motto, alluding to “the boneyard”–the outdoor storage area there for retired/obsolete aircraft).
One year after his transfer (and well after he began getting excited about and making concrete plans for retiring and returning to his beloved California), his name appeared on the promotion list, which produced a delicious (for us) dilemma: did he take the promotion he always wanted (which would require a 2-yr. re-enlistment and reassignment on top of the one year he had remaining, delaying his much-anticipated homecoming), or did he retire on schedule (which would mean not accepting the stripe he had wanted forever)?
Either way, he lost something precious, and we loved it!
