    hello all, this probably isnt a huge issue, bt i have a 3 year old cat called Rocky – beautiful creature. he was always a very homey cat, being around as soon as i got home. he has been snipped. recently he will only come home when it is dark – not so bad in the winter, but in summer terrible. he will coem in at dark, and be hapy all night and then as soon as he says it is daylight outside goes crazy. and i mean crazy runs everywhere and making himself a pest until he is let out side. it also doesnt matter what the weather is like, raining, windy, snowing, he just does not want to be indoors. when he leaves he also doesnt hang around the house, disappears all day. it is very unlike hima s before he was alway a people cat, not wanting to leave the house, any advise would be great!! thanks

    Sounds like you have an indoor/outdoor cat. This is what my cat would do too but I have got her used to a timetable of dinner at a certain time and we also whistle her to come home.

    She also knows that she has to spend the night inside and does return home for the night after going back out after dinner. It’s a matter of getting them used to a timetable. First thing in the morning Shadz is keen to get out the door and she wanders back in during the day if she feels like it, some days I don’t see her all day but she will be curled up under a shrub sleeping or hunting mice. Make his time indoors fun with some play and treats.

    It is possible he spends the day at other people’s place? I know of a cat who does a similar thing, actually she has two homes.

    i dont think he stays at other peoples house, as he is always hungry when he comes home!! we used to have a steady routine, and he was fine with that, but in the past couple of month he has changed. the whole of his personality has changed as well, he seems really skitty now and he never used to be. its really strange…. thanks for you ideas 🙂

    Jodimp, there could be a new cat in the area, maybe a Tom cat that your cat feels threatened by. When my cat suddenly acts differently I keep an eye on what is happening outside to see if there is a new cat or dog. giving them lots of attention when they do come home just reminds them where the best place to be is. Home!

    Cats usually return home when it is safe and not as much activity around in the area as dawn or dusk. If there is a hawk around or another preditory animal they will wait until the coast is clear to return. Taking your kit out on a leash/harness may work. I have 2 x-stray/ferals that enjoy their outdoor time w/me that way. If you “air your kits out” during the evening they may even sleep thru the nite inside as mine usually do!

    My cat Bella goes out @ night and comes home in the morning and sleeps the day away. I’ve tried to get her to stay indoors all the time but it just isn’t her and she is miserable. As soon as it’s dark she’s ready to go and when the sun comes up she’s home.
