My new kitten, Kensho, has a tendency to fart. Anyone know what causes this and, most importantly, how to prevent it? They cause a quite disgusting smell. At first when it happened I would look around to see if he’d taken a crap inappropriately. This morning I was sitting on the sofa-bed reading and suddenly this acrid odor enveloped me. I looked under my cushion and there was Kensho, sleeping away in the space below and behind the cushions, one of his favorite places of late.

I’ve never had this recurring situation with a cat. The only thing I can think is his diet has changed a lot. When he came to me around August 24 his diet changed from whatever it had been to Science Kitten Chow and Friskies canned Turkey and Liver as well as Salmon. Then when I integrated him with Jasmine he started eating Purina Cat Chow and the Friskies. A few days ago the Purina Cat Chow ran out and I’ve had him back on Science Diet Kitty Chow, which Jasmine has been eating too. Just yesterday I started serving both of them raw chicken breast, minced.

Hi and good Sunday to you, Mojo.

When I first got my Rockymon, he farted ALL the time and could clear out a room. I even nicknamed him Sir Fartsalot for a short time. But it may have been the food he’d been eating or a diet of outside goodies that caused it (he dwells indoors now). He doesn’t do it so much anymore. I think it’s a change of food that may be the culprit with Kensho.

The more filler and less protien in a food increases the gas in a cat. Try to look for a brand high in protien with less filler and you should solve the problem. Good Luck!

No problem there, Sox. I’m transitioning my cats over to a raw food diet. I gave them both raw chicken breast, minced, yesterday, and they liked it.

when i first got my kitten his farts could peel the paint off the walls. after he was properly dewormed and got on a good balanced diet, the farts stopped. hope your kitty grows out of it like mine did.

Anytime my kittens have had gas it has been toxic! LOL KM about the paint peeling! It has only happened though when one is sick or when their diet has changed. Once his diet is on track he should be ok…if not I’d say go see a vet!

LOL SugarBee… the farts really were that bad. I have no idea what caused them, but after his last deworming, and switching to better food, the farting has stopped (or has become unnoticeable – since i assume all mammals pass gas). Mojo hopefully you get some relief soon.
