About six months ago I adopted a stray cat who always hung around my work, his name is Pope Fitzgerald the III. About a week into having him he began meowing at the door to get out and door darting. I was going to let him out a little bit once he got neutered but I changed my mind after he succeeded in getting out a few times and came back every time with scratches all over, huge patches of fur missing, and once I even found another cats claw stuck in his back! One time he escaped and started a fight with my land lords dog, and when I separated them he attacked my face so bad i had to get stitches and almost lost my eye. He is neutered now but is still more determined than ever to go outside. He has broken two screen windows and tore off the bottom of the door trying to claw his way out. I try to keep him stimulated by playing with him and getting him new toys, but he wont play, and doesn’t even respond to q-tips anymore, his favorite toy. I made him a cat condo which he played with for all of one day and then resumed his post at the door, I got catnip too and he didn’t respond to it. I rescued a kitten two weeks ago named Melon who always wants to play with him but he just gets annoyed with Melon and lays on him if Melon starts playing with him. I have tried moving his food/water bowls, placing smells or treats around the house, spraying him, blocking the door and the windows but nothing works. I also tried to take him out on a leash but he doesnt like it. I dont want to get rid of him because he is the first cat I got when I moved out and he is very affectionate, gentle and he is my therapy animal. It breaks my heart to hear him be so unhappy but i would be sad to see him go and dont want him to get hurt outside as well, is there anything else i can do?

I wonder if other cats have access to your yard that he can see and smell. This usually spells disaster like what you are describing or peeing inside the house, but outside of the litter box such as marking territory. I still wouldn’t let him out, or get rid of him, because you are is parent and know better than he what is best for him. I would try and make barriers, sprinkler deterrents, clean flowerbeds, etc and get rid of the scents that are driving him crazy. Eventually, the cats outside will leave your yard alone. Put up a tall cat tree away from the door that he is always trying to go out of, near another window that he can look out.
Remember, if he has just been neutered, it will take a while for his horomone levels to decrease and he will be less interested in repopulating the world. Trim his claws if you can, and he will do less damage to you and your new little Melon.

yeah my land lord has three indoor outdoor cats, and my neighborhood has at least 3-4 stray cats that hang around my street. My landlords cats are friendly with Pope but I cannot say the same for the stray cats. They do not come into my yard as it is fenced in and the landlords dog is back here (my house is in their backyard) but im sure he can smell them. I will build a bigger cat tree and wait a while for his hormones to go down as he was only neutered a week ago, thank you!
