So, I’m new here, but I’ve actually gotten a lot of help from this website concerning a new kitten whom I’ve rescued over a week ago. He seems to be three weeks old, so he’s still on KMR and I’m keeping him in a large rabbit cage in the laundry room, since he’s so small, he could be forgotten and stepped on by my family members. On the bright side, compared to the day we found him, he’s doing much much better! However, I’m having a little problem.

I have a two year old cat, who goes by Simon. He also stays in the laundry room at night or when he wants to go out there. Whenever I take the kitten out-Leo- to have some play time, I have to take Simon into the house. Every time Simon’s around Leo, he constantly meows at the little guy and Leo runs off. Other times, Simon gets up and meows at Leo, then he begins to bite him and lick him. He doesn’t do it in a harmful way. It seems like Simon stops the kitten in his steps in order to groom him. But I don’t understand why he meows at Leo, but doesn’t hurt him at all. He’s neutered, by the way; if that has anything to do with this issue.

So my question is; Why does Simon constantly meow at the kitten when he’s out of his cage? And why does he keep licking him?

Mutual grooming is one of the most important things cats can do for each other.. Your quite lucky that your cat is reacting this way it mean introduction will be pretty easy ..

The licking is just a bonding action so he’s meowing because he want more contact with him and wants to bond with him..

When you do allow them to play together make sure it’s supervised untill kitten is about 8 weeks old when he’ll be able to defend himself a little better in case you older cat plays too rough.

Well, aren’t you lucky?! Buttons pretty much covered it, only thing I have to add is also beware of the kitten being rough and not letting up. I have a 10 week old that chases my big cats and bites pretty rough. They get enough of it and let him know it, but sometimes I have to intervene because he just doesn’t know when to quit. Like when they are sleeping and he just jumps on them and starts biting….I try diverting him with a feather toy. It works because his attention span is like that of a fly at the moment, but it sure aggravates the crap out of the big cats.

That’s really great news to hear! And yes, I always keep an eye on them, since Simon really can be a bit rough. He is a large cat compared to Leo hahaha. . . This really makes me happy. I was planning on only helping him recover and giving him off to adoption when he’s eight weeks, but the household has grown to love him. So we want to keep him and seeing that Simon isn’t being mean to him just makes me even happier! This way, Simon won’t be alone as well 🙂

Hi median! Simon is not used to his new friend. It’ll take time. You might take a blanket with the new guys scent on it and put it around Simons hideouts, then slowly introduce them over time. Get some wand toys or lasers n play with both cats at the same time. N welcome!
