Pumpkin’s been sneezing for a couple of days now; then again, I’ve been coughing for over a week now. Thank goodness it’s a dry sneeze (no mucus). Can cats catch colds? If so, what can I do for Pumpkin? It doesn’t seem serious enough for her to go to the vet.

Yes, they get colds. It’s called snuffles. Watch your kitty closely – if she stops eating, take her to the vet, because she wont start eating on her own again. Also watch out for coughing – that’s never good news with a kitty. As long as it’s just sneezing, you can give her some L-Lysine, you can get it at pharmacies and health food shops, just sprinkle it on her food. There is also a range of royal canin kitten food that has been enriched with lysine (my kitties didn’t like the new sprinkle flavour on their food . . .) that you could try. Please go and check out the disease on the merck veterinary manual, it can take evil turns sometimes. Google ‘merck veterinary manual’, and then type ‘feline respiratory disease complex’ into the search box. Please note the various symptoms carefully. Let me know how your kitty does? I have heaps of info to share if you need it. My kitties (7 at the time, its a contagious disease) got snuffles, it cost me R14 000 in vet bills, and they still didn’t get better, I’ve learned a few important things along the way . . .
