I just moved out of my mom’s house leaving behind two beloved cats, one of which is Simba, my favourite cat ever (he’s really stupid, trusting, vocal, adorable, distractable, and lovable. He greets you by the door, loves strangers, loves playing, and sometimes thinks we’re as adhd as him and can therefore be easily distracted by his cuteness at bedtime).

So I went to the local animal shelter this weekend and adopted the cute little kitten reaching out of her cage and meowing persistently. The people there thought she was a bit of a demon because of her determination, but she’s actually the cutest little cuddle bug in the world. When I got her home, she was covered in fleas, and she sat calmly as I picked them off and didn’t fight the bath I gave her (she just tried to run away. No clawing me at all. After having her for over 4 days, I’ve only got one teeny tiny claw mark on my hand).

She’s the sweetest, most mellow little thing (though she does like to play). The vet was surprised by how calm she was when I brought her in. I’m taking her back to the shelter tomorrow to get spayed and vaccinated, and I’m a bit worried that she’ll hate me after that. Right now, she follows me around the house, sleeps with me (although I swore I wouldn’t let her on my bed at night, she wasn’t having any of that), and seems to love me to death. The one thing I’m slightly worried about is that from time to time, she appears to be trying to nurse (kneading on me and sucking on my fingers, nose, etc). She’s about 9 weeks old and eats her food, so I hope that she outgrows this and isn’t suffering some sort of kitty-trauma (I don’t know how long she was at the shelter, but she was alone in her cage and had really, really bad fleas).

I wish I knew how to describe her coat. It seems pretty much like a basic tuxedo pattern, but the black, which appears uniform at first, actually has some red in it. It’s almost like she has very faint orange stripes, but they’re barely visible (and sometimes it just seems as though the black is “tinted” with orange). The orange is most noticeable on the underside of her tail.

Her name is Chaeli (pronounced Kaylee), and she’s named after the character in Firefly.

Aw she sounds lovely – and look at all her little toys in that picture!

It’s pretty common for young cats to be badly affected by staying at a shelter, especially if she was alone. I work at a shelter and we always have two kittens at a time in each kennel if they are that young. It’s a shame they didn’t do anything about her fleas while she was there. It’s possible she is having some anxiety and wanting her mother, hence the sucking on your hand (some cats choose blankets or stuffed animals – I have had one foster kitten who chose my eyebrow). This is harmless and as she gets older she will become less and less interested in doing it.

Hopefully when you get her spayed, she will only be away for half a day, a full day at most. I’m assuming you are taking her to that particular shelter as part of an adoption agreement. You could ask if you could stay and hold her until right before they take her to surgery – my mother did this with her chihuahua because it had severe separation anxiety. Since your little kitty is still fairly young, I think she’ll be fine. She might be groggy and moody the next day, but don’t let that discourage you, because odds are she isn’t mad at you or frightened of the shelter, but rather just recovering from anesthesia.

I’m sure you’ll have a comfy little spot for her all set up for when she comes home – maybe next to your pillow? 🙂

*And a lot of people might disagree with me here but it is my opinion that those cone shaped collars that go around cats’ necks after surgery are, in most cases, not needed. I have fostered dozens and dozens of kittens and have only used the collar on one. I believe the only reason to use one and cause a kitty such frustration is if she is showing signs of picking or biting at the incision site.*

I agree about the cone. We didn’t have one on our family cats, and I was only going to get one if it was necessary.

I’ve tried to get her to suck on something else (she likes my hair and eye best), but it’s just not working. It kind of breaks my heart to see how her eyes widened at a crease in my shirt, and she tried to suck on it for a couple of seconds before realizing there was no milk.

Other kittens at the shelter were together but only if they were in the same litter. Poor Chaeli didn’t appear to have any siblings with her.

I’ll try to make her as comfy as possible when I bring her back home, but I have a feeling she’s going to run and hide in her box (I cut a kitten-sized hole in a cardboard box when I brought her home because she was desperate for a hiding spot.)

And the little toys are amazing. I remember how Simba always liked pompoms more than the kitty toys we bought him, so I went to the dollar store and bought her a bag and threw a few of them around on the floor. I woke up this morning to find her sneaking up on them all one by one and carrying them back and forth. <3

Warm welcome to TDK TT! What a cutie patootie as Chaeli!

Here’s another good one as breed/coat color & pattern:

Oh. Then she’s mitted, not tuxedo. That description is perfect of how the white on her is. Still don’t see anything about faint orange coloring. Oh well. No one really notices it anyway. 😛

Also, some of the toes on her pads are black while others are pink. So cute. I’m obsessing over my new baby.
