Hi, I live in Cortez CO which seems to be a well catted town. Many cats in our neighborhood. I have seen only 2 dogs. Yeah for cats!

Boots, an 8 pound black and white cat, turned up at our doorstep about a month ago, barefoot and pregnant, only we didn’t know what s/he was. Finally, after feeding her a lot and her getting fatter and fatter, I brought her inside because someone told us she was pregnant.

I have never had a pet before and I feel a bit deprived since I am 70 years old. I know really nothing about cats except that I love them and always have. So, I’m enjoying my grandmahood with the kitties.

Boots of course has wonderful white feet and 5 inch long white whiskers. Well, at least one whisker is 5 inches long. She has a very interesting face. Although she is quite attractive, I don’t think she had a boy friend before and therefore these are her first kitties.

Anyway, I was awakened at 6am on Mon. May 18 with a screech from this black and white cat we had adopted who just happened to be on our bed. And she had a kitten right then and there. Ran off with it, dangling. I had to catch it. We got everyone into the “box” and she let loose with another screech and another kitty. With this one she knew what was going on and took care of it in fine shape. You might know, my husband was at work. Men are never around at such times.

All was quiet until 2pm when there was another, although quieter screech, and another kitty. By now, it was hot in our little alcove and she was panting and quite unable to do much except suffer in her heat. The 4th and last kitty, which looks just like her, arrived very soon after that and she was just plain unable to move. So, I put the little baby where she could clean it up without moving much and she did that. Those two sets of kitties were 8 hours apart. I don’t know if that is common or not, but I did check the clocks and it was 8 hours apart.

All is well with the four brand new kitties and their mama. They have all been promised to good homes. The mama cat eats and drinks, eats and drinks. She loves fresh water a full bowl of food and then the rest of the time when she is not sleeping she is cleaning the back ends of tiny little furry kitties that roll around looking for more to eat.

All in all, the mama cat is not doing too badly for a stray cat. I’d say she is a clever cat and will survive very well when she becomes an outside cat again. She knows where the food dishes are in the neighborhood and I’m sure she will visit each one after she is spayed and set outside again. Indeed, she shows signs of loving to be one of the free spirits that comes and goes as only she desires. I’d love to have her stay around, but she was a free spirit before we got her and she will probably be one when she is unencumbered by little kittens.

Hope I haven’t bored you too much.

    Orinda in Cortez.

Orinda – What a lovely narrative of a fantastic experience! I, too, brought in a pregnant stray almost two years ago – she also had 4 kits, with only a hour or 2 pause in the delivery – such gaps are not uncommon… Since you are new to cat care, you may want to call a nearby vet and see what they recommend as far as visits, shots, etc. It sounds like the whole family is doing well – there is nothing quite so endearing as kittens… I am glad you plan to spay mama – you may want to ensure that the kits are all headed to spay/neuter in their forever homes as well… I suspect that mama will hang around your home. Our mamacat (Hester – my daughter was reading The Scarlet Letter at the time we found her) has stayed inside and become quite domesticated… Welcome to TDK, and if you have pictures the gang here would love to see them – we oooh and aaah over everyone’s babies! Keep posting with questions or observations or just to chat. It is a little slow on the weekends, esp since this is a holiday… more people will sign one again tomorrow! G’night!

Hi Orinda and welcome to TDK! Thanks for taking care of this lucky kitty(lucky for finding you). It does sound like that was her first litter and I’m glad to hear that Boots is a devoted Mommy cat and she sounds pretty. (pictures…we love pictures). You might find that she wants to be around you more since you helped her out. I’m glad to hear that she is getting spayed.

Thanks for dropping by,others will be on later and have more to offer but stick around,we are nice folks who love to get to know each other and talk about kitties.

Evening Orinda and Boots with babies 🙂 Thanks for sharing that lovely story, it probably was her first litter and like most new moms, giving birth scared her a bit.

AZD, I agree! New moms are skittish, but they know their business! And such a sweet mom/kittens story! Thank you for sharing it with us!

AZD, so good to see you! Long time, no correspond. Hope you’re doing well, keeping everyone in line out west.

Orinda, BTW, while you’re getting your mom spayed, be sure to get her vaccinated for rabies and FeLuke. She’ll have a much better chance of living long life outdoors. And if you provide her with a steady food/fresh water supply, you likely will have a “patio pet.”

Welcome to TDK, Orinda! I used to live not real far down the road from you in Farmington, NM. Mesa Verde is one of my most favorite places to visit!

Thank you so much for taking in Miss Boots and brood!

    Hi Nawlins Catmom,

I love that your daughter named the mama cat Hester because she was reading the Scarlet Letter. My mother was named Hester because her mother had read The Scarlet Letter as well. Maybe I’ll have to name one of these kitties Hester.

Can we know a sex at this early age of 6 days? I really haven’t looked.

Well, I have just christened this little lady mama cat, Miss Boots as someone called her in these messages. I’m still trying to get her attention by calling her “kitty”.

How do we post photos, on Flickr or Webshots or something similar?

Orinda, a lot of us have created webpages for our cats on Catster.com. It is free and easy to do. Just go to http://www.Catster.com and follow the directions. You can link your Catster webpage to your profile here so folks can clink on your avatar and go right to the Catster page.

Orinda – it is VERY difficult to sex kittens this young… the distance between the two main orifices is the usual method, and is often hard to distinguish and thus often wrong – usually easier after 2 weeks…! See below…

Answer: Breeders sometimes liken the appearance of the early genitals of kittens to punctuation:

A female kitten’s genitals will resemble an upside-down exclamation point with the vertical vaginal slit below the anus.

A male kitten’s organ will look more like a colon with the penis below the anus separated by a space to accomodate his testicles. You may even be able to see very small lumps in that space, which will grow into testicles as the kitten matures. Because of this space, the female’s vaginal opening is closer to the anus than the male’s budding penis.

It will be very difficult to accurately tell the sex of a kitten until it is at least two weeks old, and even then, both experienced breeders and veterinarians have been known to make mistakes. A helpful drawing showing the differences can be seen at KittenRescue.com.
