I am bottle feeding a litter of 3. The best eater has yet to poop, 6 days into being bottle fed (about 12 days old). I’ve tried – increasing the water ratio in his formula, adding drops of oil, normal stimulation after meals, putting his rear under warm running water and tapping on his bottom, and tiny glycerine suppositories with no results. Is there anything else I can do to make him go?

    Rose,

    Welcome to TDK land!

Call your vet. 6 days is a long time for a wee kittah to go without pooping. Then you can give them Goats’ milk. It is easier on their tummies and gives them probiotics. It also doesn’t give them constipation. You can give this to them in lieu of formula. You can get it in the baking aisle or milk section. If you use the concentrate, mix it 1 water/1 powder. I’m also providing the go-to links for TDKers.

I’ve read all the links and have done all the suggested methods over the last 6 days with no luck. I am not comfortable giving goat’s milk as my vet said not too and most of my reading on the internet says that KMR is the only thing they should have. Vets are closed today, but I can take him back in tomorrow.

Goat’s milk works and I raised my last kitten on it entirely. It doesn’t cause constipation like the powdered KMR does. I would suggest getting the kitten to the vet as soon as you can since the kitten will probably have to have an enema; there may be an obstruction or blockage due to it not pooping for so long. Since your vet doesn’t recommend goat’s milk and the internet says KMR is the only thing they should have, what do they recommend for severe constipation? We are not vets here, but many have hand reared many kittens with good results. Constipation is common in hand reared kittens. Please let us know how they are doing.

Kitten will go to the vet tomorrow, they are all closed today for Memorial Day. So you feed just plain goat’s milk? Nothing added?

Nothing added. If you buy the condensed it’s diluted 1to1 with water. Pour it in the bottle and your good to go. Once he gets cleaned out I would keep him on it until it’s time for solid food.

I found this recipe–, but can try a bottle plain and see if he takes it.
    Homemade Kitten/Puppy Formula
    12 oz. hot water
12 oz. canned goat’s milk (do NOT use non-fat or
low fat.) All the local grocery stores
sell Meyenberg goat’s milk in a 12-ounce can.
    1 egg yolk, no whites!!
1 teaspoon Karo Syrup (do NOT us
e low cal “Lite” Karo. Never
    ever. It has an artificial
sweetener that causes diarrhea in kittens).
    1 tablespoon plain whole milk
    yogurt (Stonyfield Farm Organi
c Yogurt is a good one).
Do NOT use non-fat or low-fat, and be certain it is plain

Rose, any updates? What did the vet say?

I talked to the vet yesterday, he did not feel like he could do more than what I’m doing. I am going to call this morning and ask about Lactulose and see if that is an option.

Your vet. said that? I would get a second opinion ASAP. If nothing else, a vet. can do an enema safely instead of expecting you to do it at home.
This makes me very angry, Rose.

Wow, me too PG! I wouldn’t have that vet give ANYTHING an enema, except himself. That aside, I’d find another one very soon, like today. Your kitten HAS to poop. I wondered about the vet when he said that the goat’s milk caused the constipation, which told me that he didn’t know much about hand reared kittens. With all due respect, a lot of vets don’t and not because they don’t care, but because many just haven’t done it. And people who have done it know what works. I would feel better if you could get your kitten to another vet because I’m afraid that there is an impaction in there that won’t come out with the normal procedures. Please keep us posted!

I really do not have unlimited funds for yet another vet, especially if they are not likely to recommend anything else. A basic vet visit with no procedures is $85 to $100. I am already several hundred in on these guys, and have not plans to keep them when they are over 6 weeks. I have a call into him to see what he recommends next.
