Hello, my (about) 5-6 week old has been using a DIY litter box, which basically consisted of a shoe box and shredded newspaper. We finally decided to get her a real litter box (a triangle shaped made for ferrets so she has easy access) and litter. We did not know which litter to purchase so we asked an employee and she recommended “ExquisiCat: Clumping micro crystals, 99.9% dust free, soft on paws, fragrance free.” and I was worried that Michi would eat it. I asked the employee and she said that she wouldn’t eat it and I believed her and so, we purchased it. When I got home I filled her new litter box with the crystals and put it in her box and closely observed her to see if she would consume it and she did… she licked it and I quickly trying to get as much out of her mouth. Because of that I don’t know what to do… What are some good and safe litters in case my little Michi consumes it?? help…

Hi Divine – I prefer Swheat Scoop. It is all natural wheat based, dustless and odor free.

Since she is still very young, I would recommend plain clay, non clumping, unscented litter. Kittens do tend to eat litter because they are so food oriented at this age and younger. Once she has figured out the litter box and what it’s for, she will stop thinking of litter as food. Give it a month or so, and then switch to another one. There are many litters out there and what works for some, doesn’t work for all. I switched to a dust free (supposedly) light weight litter, and I couldn’t stop sneezing. Went to an all natural, corn based litter and my whole house smelled like corn sileage (for you non farmers out there, that’s spoiled corn used for cattle food). But for now, the cheap plain clay litter should work.

JerseyJoan & Kittyzee, thank you so much for your responses! I have decided to go with smart litter since the “safe even when ingested” drew me in as well as it being organic! I’ve been watching her and so far she hasnt tried eating it.
