Hello everyone. I got a cat that was about 4 weeks old and I was told to star weaning it off of the KMR. Well, it’s been a week now and he ha been eating lots of the food!.. but he’s also crying until he gets his milk after a good meal. He’s staying completely uninterested in water! Should I just ignore his cries when he asks for milk, and just keep a little saucer there for water?

    Thank you!

Hi Shawn – I’m not sure, but I would think a little more time on the KMR can’t hurt, seeing as he’s only 4 weeks old. Encourage the water as well.

Hi, this is such a coincidence because I JUST posted a similar question in this forum, and then saw you’d posted this just a few minutes before me!
I have 6 week old kittens and they still love their KMR too… I’m worried they’ll never get off it!! Is your kitten drinking the KMR from the bottle or from a saucer? One of mine loves the bottle so much he won’t touch the dish of KMR 🙁 🙁
I’ve heard that the best way is to dilute the KMR gradually until it is just water.
But I’m interested to hear what other people reply! 🙂

4 weeks old is way to young to try and wean off the KMR. If they are eating food, which a lot of them are not since it depends on the individual kitten, it’s great, but they still need the nourishment and hydration from the KMR. If you would like to give them something different, cheaper, and just as nutritious, try goat’s milk. You can get it at the grocery in the cold milk section, or in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed, so add water 1 to 1. It will not constipate them like KMR sometimes does. If they are eating solid food also, you can mix the two and make a gruel. Usually kittens don’t take to water really well, but you always provide it when they are weaned. Cats in the wild get most of their moisture from the food they eat. They don’t drink water the way dogs do, but they do drink it. Mine like to smack it and make a mess. 🙄 Usually kittens aren’t totally weaned until 8 to 10 weeks. I’ll post a couple of links for you on hand rearing kittens that have been a big help to many here.

Thank you all for the help! The kitty is all off the KMR, just eating food and drinking water now. I ended up adding the KMR to the food and giving him water with it, then taking the KMR out of the food slowly.
