I’ve long worried about all my pet’s nutrition. I have dogs and cats and do not trust the pet food industry or those in charge of regulating it’s safety anymore. My dog displays symptoms of kidney damage and I’m suspicious that it was caused unknowingly by pet food. I don’t know if I can afford to buy Life’s Abundance but am so glad to see an honest, healthy product. Thanks for the great pet food education spotts.

One thing I find worrisome about these “Health Food for Pets” companies is their pounding the human quality meats and denigrating that there are “by products” used in the more commercial brands. When was the last time a cat ignored eating the entrails and brains and/or beaks of their prey. Even bird feathers perform the function of flossing. The more esoteric ingredients and yes vegetable proteins especially for cats I can agree need much closer scrutiny but to campaign against the very ingredients your kitty would be consuming in the wild is to say the least pandering to our cultural prejudices.

I can’t agree with you more, ailuromania. However, cats and dogs that eat birds, rodents and other prey in the wild are not eating animals that have been spoiled or tainted by human endeavors. Check this link http://www.fda.gov/cvm/FOI/DFreport.htm

I spent 4 years researching dog food and it is just a shame what big companies do to make money.

I am so thankful that there are people that make safe pet food to feed our pets. Dr. Jane Bicks, the formulator of Life’s Abundance, is one such person. The best foods that our pets can eat is what they would in the wild, but that is somewhat hard and time consuming for some people to do. There are some small business that have done the work for you by putting Raw diets together.

And thank you all for welcoming me to your group.

Thanks for the info spotts. I sent for a sample. I have been using Iams for many years, and I’m NOT happy that they were recalled (wet) and are now on grocery food shelves.

I have used dry Iams for years too, but switched to Newmans organics. My one cat did not like it so kept eating the dry Iams. He is the one who had that BAD UTI that cost me and arm and a leg. I will not use it again. I wonder about Newmans organics too as it is on the shelves of the grocery stores. I’ve read that when cat/dog food is offered at a grocery store, it means the quality of the food has dropped considerably to be competetive. I also wondered about Life Abundance, and may try it one of these days. I worry about using any food now. Seems we just cannot trust some companies…… I made homemade dogfood for many months for my daughter’s dog cause I was so worried.

Who knows what unseen damage was done by these bad foods. A girl at work lost her cat and dog within a week of each other (I think around Christmas?)and hadn’t heard of the recalls till recently. She heard me talking about it one day and wonders now if that is what killed them. I asked her what food she used.

I have visited many other pet food related forums and believe me, the things you read makes you think a thousand times about what you feed. I try to go by my own research to decide which food is appropriate to feed and what not. It’s difficult really to claim that A food is better than B because there are always people who have had good result feeding both. Bottom line is, be an educated pet parent and always provide your pet the best you can afford. No food is numero uno if you pet won’t eat it.

What I object to is the representation that the inclusion of “meat by products” makes the food inferior. It would be healthier to include these in proportion to the muscle meats. Since the food is cooked, the bones would be problematic since cooked bones splinter. But they can be ground into meal to supply the minerals needed in the diet. Again in the proportion found in the natural diet.

I have seen “health foods” for cats that were specifically advertised to contain no “Donald, Thumper, or Bambi” in their products. Now venison is not a ligitimate prey animal for a house cat. But duck and rabbit are. You can make a case for not feeding deer meat but these same producers use beef, mutton, tuna, salmon and other items not on a housecat’s native menu.

The real horror was the “natural health” food (I can’t remember the brand) for cats that was totally vegetarian. No artificial color, no artificial preservatives and no meat or meat by products. At least it was “fortified with amino acids to promote good vision”. And this “GEM” was a 100% American manufacture.

I admit I have a wierdy who won’t touch canned cat food (he tries to bury it) and he is just beginning to agree that the Au Jus from pot roast is ok but the meat is not. He will barely touch broiled chicken or fish if I offer a share of my meal but no more than one or two bites. And he hates tuna with a passion. So, I vary the brands I buy sticking to lower ash formulas and try to watch for the origin of the ingredients used by the company.
