George isn’t much of a lap cat, and he won’t stick around long enough for me to even try to clip his nails.

try getting him while he is asleep. That is how I do my babies.

We double up, hubby holds and I trim.

And, we let the cat staff who live in the neighbourhood know we have the clippers out. Several of them are single-human households so they need help. Either they bring their babies over, or we wander across the street with the clippers.

It keeps everyone from even thinking about declawing and we usually get coffee and a donut out of it.

Kilroy try wrapping your baby in a thick towel exposing one foot at a time and clipping it. is best to have 2 people one to hold the other to clip, My guys are now used to it. I stick the towel in the dryer first they love the snuggles and I give them a cat treat after each foot is done!

    Best of luck

It is not necessary to clip the claws on the back feet…

I clip the back because when my gang plays they do bunny kicks with the back legs, especially the kittens. Chucky has had several scratches on his face from them!

Dorie! How are you and Chucky and Tess and Tonka (and all the human kids!)

Yeah, I do back feet too…those bunny kicks are deadly! and mine only get a treat when ALL feet are done…I’ll have to try more treats :p

I clip all four paws as Mia bunny kicks and boy her claws get sharp! I usually have to wait till Mia has been sleeping to clip them. I tried the towel technique on Mia and she wiggled out of it within 10 seconds. Sylvester I can pretty much do the cliping on his claws at any time. He is such a mellow cat and usually doesn’t struggle till the last paw.

    Hi linda

were all doing ok! My youngest fell on his bike today and has a bad road rash on his right knee (There’s no more skin on it) He also has several pebbles under the skin. I spent 2 hours at the hospital with him. He’s sore but ok.

They cleaned it the best they could and wrapped it and put him on antibiotics. He’s going to be really sore tomorrow!

    Thanks for asking

    Peace

Hi SMM! Maybe this is the “clipping claws nite shift”…hee…I’m still at work (not that I’ve done much!) cause I don’t want to go work-out and it’s been raining here alot tonite! Sheesh…last weekend 100 degrees and today and Sat rain, wind and cold! How are you?

Don’t know if this will be helpful, but…when I set out to do CJ, I only have the goal of doing one or two claws. I catch her when she’s been deeply sleeping and is still drowsy. Then she’ll willingly let me do 2 or 3 or maybe even a whole paw. When she starts getting wriggly, I let her go, and try again another day.

Hi Linda! I was eating my dinner and just finished up. It is cold here too and it was very windy the last two days. Winds around 25 mph.

Kilroy, the way that Lisaeylau does it is what I’d recommend.

Cats are normally very, very reluctant to have their paws touched. Their paws are their first line of defense; having their paws trapped or feeling restrained in any way is a quick way to make a cat feel vulnerable to attack!

I’d recommend doing everything you can to patiently help George get accustomed to having his paws handled a bit – no clippers, no nothing else, just having his paws handled. A good technique is distracting him with something he likes (a treat, chin scratching, ear rubs) with one hand while lifting his paw with the other hand. Later you can worry about introducing him to the clippers, touching the clipper to a claw, and then actually clipping a claw.

Until he’s better about having his paws handled, you can always have your vet or a groomer clip his claws every other week.

I must be lucky, as long as I just let them lay in my lap (like it’s their idea), they will just lay there and let me trim them. I only do front.

My son used to hold them while I clipped. After he moved into his own apartment and I was alone, I bought the “Claw Control Sack” from the Drs Foster & Smith catalog. It’s the only way I can get them clipped without my being scratched to death. Patches screams like I’m killing her.
