Hi yesterday I got a Persian cat who is around 8 years old. The women who gave her to me couldnt keep her. The cat was her boyfriends grandfather who had passed away. Well I was informed that she was very shy! I could tell, but when I took her home she came out of her carrier and was laying on the couch and my brother went to pet her and she almost bit him. I tried to give her food and water but she hissed and made a weird sound, she is now hiding in the restroom and wont come out! Will she eat? Will she use the bathroom? I just dont want her to get sick! I know she is very scared and isnt used to our environment, but I dont know how to approach her and let her get comfortable with me since she does not want anyone near her or shell bite.. Please i’m looking for advice if I give her back they are going to put her down and I had spent 104 $ on her and I dont have any intentions on giving her back… also I have a 4 year old brother and i’m scared she might attack him I know patience is key but I just want her to be happy 🙁

First off thank you for rescuing the cat from being put down. You are wonderful.
Yes the cat will be confused and afraid at being among strangers and in a strange place and it would be best if she is confined to one room or has somewhere she can feel safe like a cardboard box.
Keep her food bowls and litter tray in that one area so she doesn’t have to go hunting for them.
If you have her in one room try sitting in there with her, just sit still and very quietly and gently talk to her. Also blink at her with a slow deliberate motion until your eye just close and then open them slowly again to the half way position. It is a sign cats use to convey they are happy, safe or contented. When you do it the cat will feel that you are not a threat. Just sit there chatting with the cat for as long as you can without making any moves towards her so she doesn’t feel alarmed. That should do for starters and I am sure others will be able to add to this for making your new cat at ease and settle in.

MS gave you great advice. You are going to have to be patient–this isn’t a kitten, but an 8 year old cat! She is not used to her new environment or you yet. She doesn’t know who to trust and even my cats get threatened when someone they don’t know approaches them and tries to pet them. Some cats (especially females) don’t want strange people coming at them with “monster hands”. (That’s what it must look like to them especially when you come at them from ABOVE). You can read to her to get her used to her voice. No sudden loud noises, fast movements around her, and the ‘slow blink’ works wonders when you can get down on her level and get her to look at you. Treats too and toys, and make sure you have a cat tree placed by a window that she can entertain herself by looking outside. Remember, she was in a home with an older person who probably wasn’t as active as your household will be.
