    Any help would be appreciated!

So I currently have 1 almost 6 month old neutered cat. We acquired him this past June when he was only 1 week old. He was found underneath our porch, and we took him in and bottle fed him.

Now, we are at the point where he is “aggressive playful” he’s never mean, but plays extremely rough. He will bite our hands and arms…even though we don’t play with our hands to him. He had lots of toys. Our vet warned us this would/could happen since he is the only pet we have. He’s never been around other cats.

We thought it might be best to get a second cat for him. But I’m worried as I’ve never had 2 cats before.

Would getting a second cat help “even” him out? Will it help him to stop biting us? What should we get a younger or older cat? I definitely know that they need to have the same energy and playful level.

    Hi Amber,

I’ve been thinking on this and you should use a pheromones system like Feliway or a calming collar. You could give him Rescue Remedy for pets which works with many pets.

I don’t think getting another cat is a good idea. If he’s aggressive with you he will turn that towards a new cat. That’s not fair to a new cat and could create a very bad environment for all. Your resident cat could start spraying to mark his territory, as well.

Work on his aggressive behavior. It will take a bit of time but I believe that the best option.

He’s not aggressive all the time though…I don’t want that to be the perception of him. It’s just during play time.

I can look into the feliway. I’ve heard nice things about that. I just thought since he does it out of play he needs a cat he can play with. I’d hoped that maybe having a another cat around would allow him to play like he likes. To have someone to rump and run and wrestle with.

OK Amber but I still think addressing his occasional aggression is the best move right now. I would try the Feliway for about a couple of weeks and see how he responds. If you decide to get him a playmate, it’s easier male/female. The territory battles aren’t as bad as with same sex mixes. The playmate should be within 6 months too. I recommend going to a rescue shelter. You can explain his behavior and ask them which cat they have that would make a suitable playmate.
