My boyfriend and I recently rehomed two beautiful female kittens (age 7-8 weeks) 9 days ago. We have had them for a short time but had so much love for them, endlessly playing with them, cuddling them, and taking as many videos and pictures as possible. Tonight a terrible freak accident happened when my boyfriend fell backwards over a playpen we purchased for them, causing injury to her chest/lungs. We immediately ran to the animal hospital but we believe that she was gone before we got into the car. My boyfriend and I are beside ourselves over this tragedy. I cannot stop picturing the sight of our baby kitten injured and helpless and the voice of my partner upon seeing her this way. We are completely heartbroken. We have her sister to love and care for, but we are afraid or injuring her too. I feel as though we will be tiptoeing around our studio apartment and constantly checking her whereabouts until she grows older. She is very little (we suspect the runt of the litter) and we care for her so very much. We do not know how to console her over the loss of her sister and are trying to act as normal as possible at the moment. I have been reading about accidental death and loss but I wanted to post on a forum for some support and for others to know that they are not alone. To anyone that has been affected by a similar situation, just know that it is not your fault. The guilt and self blame may always be there but will subside with time. Your kitten/cat knows how much love you had in your heart for them, it just hurts knowing that are such sweet and innocent creatures.

I am so sorry for the death of your beloved furbaby. You are right about that it is not your fault, but it doesn’t lessen the feeling of guilt. With time the raw feelings you are experiencing will fade, and you will remember her with love and not the pain. Her sister will be fine even though she may miss her sibling for a while.

Bless you both for taking them in and giving them a loving home.

Accidents happen, and there are many things out of our control in this world.

You did everything you could, and loved her while she was yours. We wish you nothing but peace and comfort, and the joy of your departed’s sibling.
