Hi! Ive been using this site a lot since i just took in an abandoned farm kitten that the farm owner was going to kill since the mother rejected him. I was told he was about two weeks, but im not sure if that is correct because he does already have teeth? He had a lot of constipation so i watered down his formula..put a drop of olive oil.. and then let his butt sit in some warm water..(hes on the liquid KMR) and he went A LOT yesterday..i dont even know how it fit inside of him…and it was pretty hard. He seems to be doing well but i am still nervous..so any advice is helpful… i was eating breakfast yesterday while he was on my lap and he was all over my plate eating the crumbs from my toast so i gave him some formula on a plate and he ate it all (though i was worried since he had his nose all in the formula)…should i try doing some canned puree with formula..or stick just with bottle feeding (he chews all over the nipple and/or the syringe tip..only suckles on rare times..and seems to only like it when the milk is flowing down his throat)..also i have some Bene-BAC and was wondering if i should give him some of that and what amount (he was very malnourished when i picked him up.. he had sat outside in a storm overnight because the mother cat kept putting him outside)..Ive been keeping him warm with a corn heat pad (filled with corn and you heat up in microwave and it has a [pillow case around it)..he also seems to want to be active.. but i read that a kitten his age should mostly sleep and eat..so should i try and make it so he doesnt have any walk around the house time?

I havent raised a kitten since i was 10 years old.. so 13 years ago… so im very rusty at this..any great advice would be awesome… like i said i have been reading other posts for information..also..is there a way to tell what his age really is?

    Good Morning Marissa,

Concats and thanks for rescuing this wee kittah.

He should be seen by vet to determine his age, weight and get dewormed.

    Feeding

You can give him a little bit of wet food and see if he eats it. If he does eat it, then you can begin changing his diet. You can mix some formula with the wet food for the first couple of days and then ween him off formula. Make sure you feed him kitten food because it has the extra protein and stuff he needs to grow up healthy. You will need to feed him as much as wants to eat.

It’s important to keep him warm as kittahs can’t regulate body temperature (for the first 3-4 weeks). You can buy a cat bed but a box with a warm, fluffy blanket will be just as appealing.

When you stimulate him, put him over the litter tray so it goes into the tray. Then put your wee guy in the tray with NON-CLUMPING litter (Kittahs are known to eat clumping litter). Do this periodically throughout the day and he should figure it out quickly. I wouldn’t use a tray that’s too low because once he goes on his own, he will fling litter everywhere.

Here is the guidelines for Bene-BAC

Newborns- 1/2 gram at birth; 1/2 g on day 3, 5, and 7 and at weaning. Hand fed orphans increase to 1 g on days 7, 14 and introduction to solid food.

Maintenance – 1 g for every 10 lbs. body weight

It’s great that he’s active because that means he’s feeling better and getting stronger. He will play and romp around and then *klunk* fall asleep. He can sleep for up to 16-18 hours a day but he does have energy to burn off. Within the next month, you should invest in a cat scratching post to begin good behavior. Good luck and always check back if you have more concerns and do give us an update on your boy. BTW-What’s his name?

We named him Petey.. my 5 year old son calls him “pete the cat” like the book/song. Now he has diarrhea and it seems quite yellow/orange in coloring… so we went from not pooping at all.. to him pooping and it being all over him when he wakes up :/

    Hi Marissa,

Well, I guess if he has to go… I”m sure you know not to give a body bath just take a warm cloth and clean him off. How long has Petey had diarrhea? It’s not good for him to go too long with it so I recommend taking him a vet. It could be as simple as deworming.

    Here’s somr guidelines:

If a kitten has to wait a while to see a veterinarian, one can choose to withhold food from him for a few hours to see if this helps lower the occurrence of loose stool. But remember: the kitten will need to have plenty of fresh water available. A kitten with diarrhea should be fed bland foods like plain yogurt or chicken baby food. Grapefruit seed extract (a few drops in the food) or a bit of fiber supplements can also help a kitten overcome his stomach problems.

Again, Goat’s milk is soothing to their tummies and you buy it in any grocery/food store.

Hes had it since last night. I think i was over feeding him. So im now doing less kmr formula more often… i think that has helped since he hasnt had any runny stool since then (well, no stool at all which is an improvement of what was going on).
