Some sad news about the Athens cats, folks. The people who so enthusiastically contacted the Humane Society about adopting the abandoned Athens cats are not following through with their initial interest. Thus far, only 4 cats have been adopted, and the Society is planning to begin euthanizing cats on Monday. I spoke with the volunteer at the cat shelter a few minutes ago to confirm the story that was in yesterday’s Athens Banner-Herald. She said that several people had completed adoption applications since that article was published, so some of the people “sitting on the fence” have been prodded to act. The cats would be euthanized according to health and temperament, with those in poorest physical condition and least socialized euthanized first. The volunteer said that the cats whom I visited last Sunday are likely to get homes.
A bright spot in this is that the comprehensive shelter they’re planning to build would be much more equipped to handle a situation like this should one ever arise again. The worst thing is that the pond scum who did this to the cats is still at large and I’m afraid that, after the cats are euthanized, the authorities are just going to forget about pursuing him.
