    VANILLA MILKSHAKE DAY
Many people happily celebrate vanilla Milkshake Day on June 20 of each year. The first time the term “milkshake” was used in print was in 1885. At this time, milkshake referred to an alcoholic beverage which was a whiskey drink described as a “healthful eggnog type of drink” served as a tonic as well as a treat”. By 1900, milkshake then referred to “wholesome drinks made with chocolate, strawberry or vanilla syrups”. A few years later in the early 1900?s, people began asking for this new treat with a scoop of ice cream.
Here’s a couple of delish “tried and true” recipes for you:

A vanilla milkshake sounds awesome! Usually I get chocolate so vanilla will be a nice change.

Oh vanilla milkshakes, so delicious. Does anyone else have thickshakes? Just a milkshake with extra ice cream in it so it is thicker and requires extra hard slurping to get it up the straw.
It’s been an incredibly wet day here in NZ, snow and some flooding in the South Island and flooding in the south of the North Island and moving on up the island. Jcat I hope you are fine at your place and your feet are dry. There are many road closures because of slips or bridges washed out or roads under way too much water to be safe to drive on. We are just plain wet here so far. Temperatures are way up for a Winter’s day around 15-17C. Of course HRH Shadz is out in the rain having fun but she should be in soon for dinner.
The kittens my son in law rescued are so adorable and quite socialised now, I spent the afternoon playing with them. We thought we had found a home that would take both of them but that fell through and now someone wants to come and take one. We are going to have a good chat with them tomorrow and see what they are like before making a decision. 🙁 😥
Daughter may well keep the kitten that is left as they have grown quite attached to them both.

A little early morning wakefulness, here so I thought I’d pop in. I’d take a milkshake of any flavor. Not too thick for me, it frustrates me to not be able to get it into the straw. :). But if you gave me a spoon….

MS, I don’t know how kitten rescuers give them up, but kudos to your daughter. I hope this family turns out to be a good one.

Good morning everyone…I would take a vanilla milkshake too, really thick with a spoon please. It has been incredibly wet here too, in fact I haven’t been out to the patio all week, it has rained everyday; the last two days all day. It’s raining now and will all day and tomorrow. This is air show weekend in Dayton, with the Air Force Thunderbirds performing this year. They have a special show when the cloud deck is really low like it is now and raining. They changed the dates from July to June because of the horrible heat in July, now they are dealing with rain.. 😐
Mr. KZ came home this week and said a neighbor came to him while he was working outside at his parents’ old dairy and had kittens. They wanted to know if he would take them. There were three, but the kids decided they wanted to keep one. He took two little male kittens (white and grey striped tabbies) about 10 to 12 weeks old I suspect. They are adorable and very friendly and purry. I sprayed frontline on them, and fed them. He has carpeted wood planks in the old dairy parlor with a box with a window in it with bedding, hooked to a hanging metal basket filled with blankets for cats to sleep and play in!! (Do you think I have had some influence on him?! 😮 0 Then two other little kittens appeared out of nowhere, very small and hungry (probably from a feral stray living there in the barns) who look to be only about 5 weeks old (way too young to be away from momma) and they now are all up there together. They now have plenty of food, goat’s milk (had to get them started on that!) and clean dry beds and play areas. They aren’t inside someone’s home, but at least they are well cared for and loved–better than being dumped out somewhere to be prey for larger animals.
Hazeling for me today…at my own speed, which will be slow and lazy…. 🙂

Good morning – I love a nice thick milkshake. I make mini-shakes at home when I have ice cream; in a little custard dish, a scoop of ice cream and some milk. Then I sit and play with it, stirring it till it gets to a thick shake consistency. Depending on the ice cream flavor, maybe I’ll add chocolate syrup.
MS, hope dau finds someone to take the kitten, and awesome that she is keeping one! A few people have asked at the farmer’s market if there are any kittens there, but sister said no, the fosters she has are old enough to be alone and are actually almost ready to be adopted! One kitten is sick – sister thought initially that it was just lethargy that comes with kitten shots, but quickly took action as it seems something more. So far so good. The vet she works for took the kitten overnight to keep an eye on him. And as Murphy’s Law would have it, that’s the kitten that someone is very interested in adopting. Hoping for a speedy recovery so little Kobe can move into his furever home.
Jcat, hope you are staying dry and the rains aren’t cramping your style. We say this all the time, but seriously, why have we (you know, those smart scientist/engineer people) figured out how to relocate rain to drought-stricken areas?
KZ, you have more kittens! Yes, it sounds like you have Mr. KZ trained! Those little stripey kits sound adorable. I wonder if the little ones knew they were there and made their way to them when they couldn’t find mama.
BBQ spaghetti, AV? Do tell, that sounds interesting!
Rain expected here too, remnants of tropical storm bill.
The 4am shenanigans have me laying in bed giggling. Of course it wakes me up, and often I can’t get back to sleep for a while, but I always think that there will be a time when it will be quiet, so I treasure every moment. Even Leela’s growling!

KZ, so glad you have a safe place for those kittens! I wonder if any of your older outdoor cats will take them under their wing?

Hope everyone has a relaxing Saturday!

ECB, if those kittens were at my house (our farms are only less than 1/4 mile away) they would. But I think they will be better off safety wise where they are as we live so close to the road and the other farm is way back a long lane. Back when this house was built, I’m sure there were only horse drawn carriages and horses around and nothing to worry about. Now, people driving past would gleefully hit your animals (even you) and keep on driving. As many of my animals cats and dogs, have had that happen over the years. I have always taught my kittens to be fearful of cars, but these won’t have the benefit of me teaching them unfortunately, but they won’t have to worry where they are. I will make sure to play and love on them though, as will the granddaughters!

Sad news re PJ, I guess she was active on TDK before I came on site. My condolences.
I finally received my new furniture and it’s amazing how changing one room gives place a new look as though I just moved in. Spent time trying out the different heights that my chair can attain and the 3 positions of my futon/sofa. I check behind me as I post this and I have the sofa in it’s bed incarnation, with big stuffed cushions along the back and my Dorry on it, dozing. Nice. Pics tomorrow or Monday, or …
Joan, I add my paws up to those yearning to see Miss Leela dress-clad. But don’t want you to risk life and limb in process of getting a pic! 😯

Yes as having been with TDK a bit over 12 years now, I rarely post. Paula was a mentor and one of the kindest souls I have ever met. I know that TDK is all new and changed, but I am thankful for those that took a moment of their day to remember that TDK has members around the world and that we have supported through so much of life together. Paula was a mighty blessing–may those that remember her think to light a candle and hold her family in your thoughts.

Hi TDKers, such sad news about PJ passing. I remember well when we ‘lost’ her for many many months when she was gravely ill but she came back to us. We have sat with her through floods at her door and heavy snowfalls that kept her from leaving her house. We have laughed and cried at the antics of her furkits. Now it is our turn to shed a tear or more at her passing and then smile knowing the joy she will have reuniting with her furkits at the Meadow.
Paula Jean you will be sorely missed but not forgotten because just as cats do you made an impression on our hearts. 😥 🙂

KZ, you gain two young kits and daughter has found a home for one of the two her hubby rescued. Two nice young men came to see the kittens and while we grilled them on their cat knowledge etc one of the kittens chose them as suitable staff. The kitten was all over them and the man was totally at ease with him and has grown up with cats so we waved goodbye to the boldest wee tuxie. His brother may well be staying put with daughter and their two adult cats. Sounds like your rescues are being spoiled already, Mr KZ is a sweetie for building such a lovely home for them. Oh my ! ! ! Two more kittens, the news certainly gets around quickly when there are good people who care.
AV, more rainwater for the fishies! They wouldn’t want to be in some parts of NZ, huge floods and evacuations and houses and towns with flooding and areas cut off because of washed out bridges and slips. Thank goodness the rain has stopped so water levels can fall and clean up can begin in the least affected areas.
KJ. glad the furniture is all in and giving the room a totally new look and that Dorry doesn’t seem to be perturbed by the new additions.
