    Hi All,

I brought home my 3 month old baby Simba (it’s a girl..long story) about a week ago. For two days she did great and then I introduced a little dry food (just for when I’m gone during the day, she still gets wet morning and night) and later that night she threw it all up undigested. She went to the vet the next day for her well visit and they said don’t worry she’s just eating too fast. They gave her dewormer and two vaccines. Then that night she threw up undigested food again and then twice threw up bile. I freaked and took her back to the vet. They said she’s a little gassy but otherwise in good health and gave her a probiotic to help her tummy. She has been on the probiotic and eating only her wet food again and she still throws up bile at 4am each night. Only in the middle of the night hours and hours after eating. So the vet said they need a fecal sample but she is never pooping! She has a great appetite, she’s playful and grooming herself but doesn’t poop. I’m out of ideas and starting to get really worried about my baby. Probably going back to the vet tomorrow…

Hi Megan, sorry about the trouble you are having with your kitten. I would try her on some goat’s milk–you can get it in the milk section at the store. It has good probiotics in it and also will help settle her tummy. I think the best thing you are doing is getting her back to the vet. I presume she is using a litter box at this point, but you say she isn’t pooping. Is it possible that she is pooping somewhere else and you haven’t found out where? Sometimes cats (if they are having trouble going and it hurts) associate the litter box with their pain/discomfort and won’t go in the box. When you finally get things moving, you can place the poop in the box and she will figure out it’s okay. This is just a suggestion since I don’t know her specific problem. I hope they can get to the problem with your kitten, maybe give her an enema. Have they done an x-ray to see if there is a blockage: maybe she ate or chewed on something she shouldn’t have? These are questions to ask your vet. Keep us posted, good luck!

    Hi Megan,

KZ is one of our best foster meowmies so she has great advice. My only addition is purrhaps Simba is allergic to something in her food. Try giving her a kitten sensitive stomach formula.

    Hi guys,

Thanks so much for your answers! She finally passed a stool and it went to the vet for a fecal sample. Waiting to here back on that. Immediately afterward she was so much more herself and no vomit last night! Today she went again but her stool was pretty soft so I’ll keep an eye on that. Right now the theory is she just had a rough adjustment to coming to her new home! I had wondered about the going elsewhere but I searched and found nothing. She’s such a diligent litter box user that she even threw up in there when she got sick! I think it’s her safe zone right now in the new home. Right now she is completely off dry food because they are wondering on the food allergy thing as well, so I have a kitten formula to try a few bites with once she’s settled for awhile so that I can leave her something when I go back to work! Thanks again and hopefully all solved itself…

Aww Megan, so glad she finally went! Wow, I wish I could get my cats to barf in the box….!! Hope she settles in soon, most cats just don’t do well with ‘NEW’! Let us know about the sample…fingers crossed that it’s fine.

So an update on Simba. All her fecal samples came back negative, but now she has gone from constipation to diarrhea. And her poor little backside looks quite irritated from all of this (swollen and red). The vet said to keep an eye on it and if she doesn’t improve in a day or so or shows other symptoms to bring her in again. She’s supposed to get another round of deworm tomorrow but if her tummy is still this problematic I feel like I’ll probably wait a day or two on that until her stools return to normal. I’m not sure what’s causing the diarrhea other than her stomach still just settling from everything? Any ideas? The vet didn’t seem concerned about it as long as she’s staying hydrated and it doesn’t persist.

Also, She is on probiotics from her vet, would goats milk be a good idea for her tummy or is introducing yet another thing to her system a bad idea?

The goat’s milk would actually be wonderful, it naturally contains good flora for her gut and will help to settle her stomach. I used it just this weekend to settle my youngest cat’s tummy…it works incredibly fast for him. He was miserable and then he drank the goat’s milk–he settled down and went to sleep and when he woke up he was so much better. Did they test the fecal sample for coccidia or giardia? These one celled parasites are notorious for causing diarrhea, and the normal worm meds don’t touch them. You can put vaseline, aquaphor, or some other soothing ointment on her little backside to help her skin to heal. Something that is scentless, and not toxic if she is cleaning herself there.

They did test her for both of those and all came back clear. She had a mostly normal stool this evening (a little runny at the end) and has been eating. She still seems to be a touch under hydrated based on the skin test and has acted a little off. Maybe I’ll try some goats milk when I have to give her dewormer tomorrow. I did put a touch of Vaseline on her and she seems to be ok there, not whining when she uses the litter box. It just scares me how up and down she seems to be! I’d love her to be stable for a few days so I can breathe easier!! Thank you so much for all your advice!

You are welcome Megan! She sounds like she is feeling better. Sometimes progress is slow. The goat’s milk won’t hurt her, so don’t be afraid to try it. Just put a little in a bowl beside a plate of her wet food, and let her eat and drink. Remember the cans are cheap, about under $2.50, so if she doesn’t like it you aren’t out much.

She LOVED the goat milk and all seems to be going well, even with the dewormer today.

Sadly little Simba threw up all her food in the middle of the night again. Really seems to be the dewormer that upsets her stomach so badly. Poor little furball is acting much better afterwards though. The bizarre thing is she threw up an almond. I don’t ever eat nuts so I have no idea where it came from…. But I’m glad it’s out now! I got her to take a little goats milk and some food afterwards and she seems to be recovering fine but a cal to the vet is for sure in the morning.

Aww, poor baby. I would stop the dewormer for now I think, just my opinion. Are you sure it was an almond? A WHOLE one? Or do you think it was parts of a parasite (worms)? The goat’s milk IMO, is a miracle worker as it settles my cats’ stomachs as soon as they drink it!

It was definitely a half of an almond! It was huge and round and now that it isn’t midnight maybe I’ll fish it out and double check. Yeah I don’t want to give her any more dewormer right now, I don’t want her to go through this again! She is drinking bits of goats milk and eating so she’s getting hydrated and getting her tummy settled. I called the vet to let them know and now I’m waiting for a call back. It’s so frustrating she had two good days and now I’m back to a puking kitty.

Very frustrating for sure. I’m glad she likes the goat’s milk. Hopefully without the wormer she will settle down and stop getting sick. Some cats have very sensitive stomachs and will vomit anything out of the ordinary. I have one that can only eat plain chicken other than her ordinary food, any other meat like beef or pork she yaks all over the place.

Just an update! Her system was off (soft stinky poo) for a few days but she has stabilized now and is doing great! She loves her goat milk before bed and her not eating right before bed time seems to keep her tummy happy. She has been a healthy happy kitty for several days now! Even while she is pushing through some impressive new teeth! Thank you so much for your advice for my Simba!

Megan, it is so satisfying to know we have helped in some way for a kitten and it’s owner to work through the rough spots. Thanks for the update!
