Asa

Today we have a very special Star Kit. His name is Asa and he is a Snow Leopard from Syracuse, New York. He was born on the 9th July 2014.

Asa (pronounced ahh sah, Nepali for “hope,”) weighs about 8 pounds after a birth weight of 1.2 pounds (530 grams) and is just starting to eat meat. Asa was born by cesarean section on July 9, 2014 to mom Zena after it was shown that the mother was in distress. At first a heartbeat could not be detected. Asa was initially unresponsive; veterinarians from Cornell University worked quickly to stimulate and revive him.

Because of the uncertainty of Zena’s medical condition following the procedure, the decision was made to hand-rear the cub. He is currently being hand raised by collection manager Peg Dwyer and keeper Ann Donnelly at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park in Syracuse, New York.
