Tilly

This lovely little lady is Tilly, and she’s very special. She has Feline Muscular Dystrophy.

Tilly was born outside to an abandoned house pet. We don’t know what happened to Mama, but at seven weeks old Tilly and her siblings were found in a garden shed, half starved and mewing for their lives. The kittens were taken in by the RSPCA hungry, cold and dirty, and they all had ticks and worms. On top of this, Tilly couldn’t walk – she could only drag herself about by her front paws. The vets gave her a week to see if she’d improve, or they’d put her to sleep.

Handed a death sentence, no-one expected Tilly would get stronger, but she’s a little fighter and very slowly but surely found her feet. Yet as soon as they were of age, Tilly’s sisters and brother were adopted, but Tilly was left behind. Thats where we came in. Earlier in the year, my partner and I had adopted another indoor-only kitten from the RSPCA, and they called us to appeal to our better natures and see if we wanted a playmate for Mona. So we visited Tilly, and instantly fell in love with her golden eyes, terracota nose, determined spirit and sweet nature. She came home with us a few days later.

As it is today, Tilly walks very strangely, with a wobble and back legs that thud as she walks, especially just after she wakes up. She can climb by pulling herself up with her front paws and can jump by hurling her body in one direction. She often forgets where her legs are, ending up in all kind of weird and wonderful positions, and has little to no feeling in her tail which she can’t lift higher than horizontal. But nothing can stop her. She’s fearless and surprisingly fast. She’s also incredibly loving, follows us round like a puppy and checks on us through the night to make sure we’re ok.

Yep, she’s one special Kitty.
