Trixee, Teddy and Baxter

Love it!

Location: Philomath, Oregon, USA

Trixee, Teddy and BaxterGot Kittens? Yes we do! Trixee, Teddy and Baxter, six week old littermates, on their way to the vet for their first appointment. Ironically, they are related to the first two kittens we got last summer, Zoe and Bella. I love kittens but I wish I could catch the Mom and have her spayed. We are unsure if we are keeping them or find them homes, but either way they have stolen our hearts!

What is an electric lemonade? I love lemon!

          • Profile photo of karinfromalameda Karin from SF, CA

It is made with blue curacao, sprite, orange, and some other liquor to make it taste sort of like a lemonade with an extra punch. It is bright blue and is not only yummy but a good eye catcher if you are on the hunt for a hunky man. Hehehehe

These three kitten are so floofy looking. I want to adopt all three of them. Sylvester would have fun with them. They seem to be conjuring up some evil plan between the three of them…wait till we get out of this carrier. buwahahahaha!

For those who threatened bodily harm to me if I didn’t post this today: 🙂

Bacon-Spinach Quiche (From Brendan Manor B&B, LaGrange, TX, and a couple of alterations by me)

9-10 1-ounce slices of Mozzarella cheese
      9 eggs, beaten
      3/4 c. plain, unsweetened yogurt
8 oz. frozen spinach, thawed and drained to remove moisture(squeeze the daylights out of it–otherwise you’ll wind up with soup)
      1 Tbsp. chopped green onions
6 slices mesquite-smoked bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled (I have been known to cheat by using good-quality pre-packaged bacon bits–they work just as well)
2 Tbsp. Colby-Jack and Cheddar cheese, shredded

Optional add-ons: sauteed sliced mushrooms, diced water chestnuts

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a well-greased pie or quiche pan evenly with the Mozzarella cheese to make the “crust” for the quiche. Place the pie pan on top of a foil-lined cookie sheet to catch any drips that may occur during baking.

In a bowl, combine eggs with yogurt. Add onion, spinach, and any optional ingredients. Mix well and pour into pan. Sprinkle with bacon and Colby-Jack/Cheddar cheeses.

Bake for 40 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove from heat and let stand at least 5 minutes before serving. Cut into six slices. Serves 6.

*Oh, Quique–aqui, por favor. Quiero una cerveza Victoria y un coctel de camarones para mi, mis gatitos, y mis amigas. (since Instinct is strangely silent on the beachfront service, I assume we’re all girls here) Oh, perdon, mis gatitos preferen leche–no cerveza para ellos, pero mas camarones, por favor.*

I also have a litter of 4 kittens along with the mother living in my basement. The mother had the kittens in my garage and I captured them in the garage and brought them in through the window. Of course the kittens were too young to run away at that time and the mother actually flew in the window when I opened it. I was pretty cold outside and she was really glad to be in the warm basement. I now can not catch any of them. They are going on 10 weeks old. I am also thinking about keeping all of them along with the mother. Do you have any suggestions on how to catch them?

    • Profile photo of spacecatsgarden Chey, Mummy to Doxie (Aeryn) and Kizzy

Spend as much time in your basement just talking to them and sitting and play music or a tv when your not there so they get used to human contact as much as possible. Allow them to roam you house if you can.

Whatever you do, DON’T CHASE THEM. Hang around them, bring them treats and act as though you’re ignoring them. When they’re comfortable, they’ll come to you. I learned this with my 2 feral kittens several years ago. My husband chased them and now one of them stays completely away from him. —They have long memories, it seems.

      • Profile photo of feral susie in california

–Chey–That’s what I did also to win over Hannah & Lacy w/their brothers. Lacy to this day is abit skittish because a family member in the house they were found in threw her out the window. I found her hours later crouched under a bush. She let me walk right up to her & pick her up. The rest is history. I just hope one day that guy gets payback in the you-know-what!

    • Profile photo of LauraInChi Laura in Chi

Maybe also try adding some vet-prescribed cat-sedative to their food. You are so wonderful to care for cats that you cannot even enjoy. Sweet. Maybe one day soon you can sneek some pats on their fur.

    • Pansysmum

The more time you spend with the kittens, the quicker they will come around. Just sit down on the floor near the food and wait. They will come around eventually and as they get more used to your being there, move the food closer. They will assocate your presence with food and will be friendlier. The mother may take longer. Older cts are harder to instill trust in, but it can happen. Time is the best thing. I have tamed many wild cats and kittens with great success. The most important thing is to get them used to you. The kittens are still young enough to tamed down, the mother may always be somewhat wild.

If you want to catch them use a humane trap as suggested below by Eric and Rosie. If you have a small spare room I would keep them there while you are socializing them. Too much space and too many hiding places make it much more difficult.

Once you have them in a smaller space spend as much time as possible with them. Lure them close with treats or toys. Do your best to catch the friendliest kitten, wrap in a soft towel and keep it on your lap, stroke and talk to it for 20 minutes once or twice a day.
It usually only takes 1 or 3 days to have them purring and loving being held. Do the same with the others, once you have 1 or 2 coming for a pet and play the others will be easier to catch and lap train.

I’ve had feral mom Peach for 2 years, she had her baby Pip in my bathroom, and though she sleeps on my bed and loves to play I can not pet her. Someday, maybe in another year, I’m sure she will finally let me do more than get in a quick touch. I’ve also had Chloe another feral for over 2 years, who until two months ago would not let me touch her, and now I can pet and hug her.

Were any of them tested for FeLV? It is rampant in feral communities and so contagious.

    • Profile photo of RosieinCA Rosie in SA

Everytime you bring them food, sit on the floor (so you are not so big and intimidating) and talk softly to them. Every couple of days sit closer to the food dish until they are eating next to you. This may take a while but trust isn’t easy. The first time you want to touch them, hold out one finger (also, not intimidating) let them sniff and deside if they want to rub. Another good trick is to rub yourself with their sent, if they sleep in a certain place rub whatever they were laying on on you so you don’t smell funny. The only other advice is patience lots and lots of it.

Okay, we now have two Angelas, so I’ve added my last name. I’m the pain in the butt who thinks there are too many kitties on death row, so every cat we can catch should be neutered.

I know all too well about catching and socializing ferals, and concur with the suggestions so far, especially about the power of seeming to ignore them, getting them into a smaller space, associating your physical closeness to food. But first, trap them all at once and get them into a smaller room. I usually use the bathroom, since there’s less to wreck and they see us often.

For trapping, you can get all of them at once by using the fact that cats, smart as they are, don’t understand physics. I use a medium dog kennel and a long piece of string. Tie the string to the door, loop it through the top of the kennel frame and leave a long length, about six feet or more. Put the food inside the kennel and stand quietly six feet away, holding the string but not
doing anything with it, for several days, while they eat. Then one day when they’re all inside, decisively slam the door from six feet away, then quickly latch it. They’ll scream & cry at first — ignore it. The worst thing you could do would be to catch them and then let them out — you’ll never catch them again. The second worse thing would be to let the rest of them see one of them get caught in a humane trap — that will make them all trap shy forever. So buy a kennel (or borrow a *clean* one). Once they’re inside, you can give them a litter box, food and water bowls. Use garden gloves to protect your hands during this, and later when you need to take the kittens out one at a time.

The whole kennel can be schlepped to the vet for exams and to get Momcat spayed when it’s time, if you can get someone to help you lift it into the car.

The socialization answer is: Stockholm Syndrome works. The fastest socialization is one cat, one person. If you have multiple cats, let the rest be jealous of the attention the first brave one gets. Let them come to you. It *always* works.

Your reward will be, eventually, crying your eyes out when you have to part company as these now-loving and healthy kitties move on to their forever homes. That’s a *good* reason to cry.

Are there any of those cinnamon buns left? I woke up late!

Hm. I am from New Jersey, and I have NEVER heard anyone speak that way! The accents from North Jersey and South Jersey are very different, with the North Jersey accents being closer to a New York accent and therefore more likely to use non-words like “dat” and “bada-bing, bada-boom”, but I really have never even heard anyone in North Jersey use that kind of “language”…and now I live in New York, and while the accents are stronger here, I’ve still never heard that sort of non-language….

Not saying your story isn’t true (AND it was funny, lol!), just defending my state from it’s unearned crappy reputation, lol! 🙂

          • Rumi

LOL, Instinct! Well again, it depends on which part of NJ a person is from…I was born and raised near Atlantic City, waaay in the southern part of the state, and most people seem to only be familiar with north Jersey (most of the stuff on that list, such as the Action Park reference, refers to stuff in central or north Jersey)…but I’ll give it a try. 🙂

For me personally, I am familiar with and/or agree with the following:

            2. You don’t think of citrus when people mention “The Oranges”.
            3. You know that it’s called Great Adventure, not Six Flags (DEFINITELY this one, lol!)
            6. You’ve eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 a.m. — Well, I don’t drink or do drugs, but I’ve eaten at diners at 3 a.m. more times than I can count, lol!
            8. You know that the state isn’t one big oil refinery.
            9. At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen and you know what town Jon Bon Jovi is from (I don’t know what town Jon Bon Jovi is from, but I have met his wife, lol! And I do love Bruce, although that didn’t happen till a couple of years ago when I saw him in concert…)
            10. You know what a “jug handle” is. Well DUH, of course! lol
            11. You know that a WaWa is a convenience store — Definitely. No 7-11s around, just Wawa (only the FIRST “W” is capitalized!). Ah, the midnight Wawa runs, lol…
            12. You know that the state isn’t all farmland.
            13. You know that there are no “beaches” in New Jersey – there’s “The Shore”, and you know that the road to the shore is “The Parkway”, not the “Garden State Highway” — actually, it’s only NON- New Jerseyans that call it “the Shore”, people actually from NJ DO call it the beach. But as for the Parkway, that’s right — I’m pretty sure no one calls it the “Garden State Highway”, I don’t think that’s even a name for it, official or otherwise…
            14. You know that “Piney” isn’t referring to a tree — that’s right, it refers to the hicks. 🙂
            15. Even your school cafeteria made good Italian subs. And you call it a “Sub” not a “submarine sandwich” or worse yet, a “hoagie” or a “hero”. AMEN!!!!! LOL
            17. You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.
            18. You knew that the last question had to do with driving. LOLROFL!! These two cracked me up! But what, do other states not have circles?? I mean, there must be some on other states…I know they exist in other countries — I’ve been to Paris and London, and they certainly exist there!
            19. You know that this is the only “New…” state that doesn’t require “New” to identify it (like, try… Mexico, …York, …Hampshire – doesn’t work, does it?) — Again, it’s actually only people who are NOT from NJ that do this, usually New Yorkers. People FROM New Jersey ALWAYS use the “New”, at least everyone I’ve ever known does.
            20. You only go to New York City for day trips, and you only call it “The City” — Yep. 🙂
            37. You were not raised in New Jersey. You were raised in either North Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey — LOL, I guess I’ve proven this one with my own statements! 🙂
            39. You remember the stores Korvette’s, Rickel’s, Channel, Bamburger’s and Orbach’s — hm, well I do remember Rickel’s, but I’ve never heard of Channel or Orbach’s, and I only know Bamburger’s from spending summers with my Grandmother in Philly….
            42. You’ve never pumped your own gas — SO true, lol! I was surprised when I moved to NY and saw everyone doing it, lol!

you can use a cat-sized animal trap with a tasty tuna treat inside, then take the mom to a vet who specializes in feral cats… these traps do not harm the cat at all…if you live near a large city there is probably an animal adoption agency that will loan the trap and perhaps sell you a certificate for spaying at a reduced price.

You can usually “rent” a live trap from the local animal defence league or animal control facility. They will have great tips for you on how to trap the mom. Our ACF only charges $5.00 a day for the trap.

      Hi Everybody,

I just learned that Spa Select kitten Food was recalled, because of the tainted rice protein. I’m so upset – I thought it would be better for Bob and swiched him to it/mixed with his old food just before he got sick. That’s why he has kidney problems – I feel like kicking someone!!!!!!! I continued him on his old food after we went to the vet, but the day I thought he felt better, I mixed it with the Spa Select again, and he threw up all day!
Should I contact someone about this?
Will this leave my little Bob’s kidneys permanently damaged?

      • Profile photo of Dee from Tampa Dee from Tampa

Great Dane–I don’t want to be an alarmist, but I think you should take Bob to the vet…here is an answer to your question…

      • Profile photo of gladys gladys

Great Dane–I’d be murderous if I even THOUGHT my kits had eaten tainted food. BUT–It may not be as bad as all that. It doesn’t sound like Bob ate too much of the Spa Select, and it does sound like he got sick immediately after eating it and so you switched him off again…Definitely talk to your vet, and if you have any of the food left, bring it with you for testing…but I’m praying that Bob just has a sensitive kitty-tummy and the barfing was just reaction to the switch in food.
Your vet should be able to tell you about the possibilities of permanent vs. temporary damage.

Hugs to you, and to Bob as well–I’ll be sending good thoughts your way!!

Great Dane, I am so sorry about this terribly upsetting problem with sweet little baby Bob. I pray it is not the food. I’m sure your little Bob is as sweet as my bigger Bob, so I certainly understand how you are feeling right now.

            Hi again,
I had my roommate check the number on the cat food, and unfortunately it matched the recalled one!!!! I kind of figured it would: what are the chances of the little guy just developing a kidney problem out of the blue like that and it having nothing to do with the contaminated food?
I stopped by the vet, who’s practically next to my office and the vet is going to call me when he gets out of surgery. I also spoke to my friend who lost her kitten almost two months ago due to the wheat gluten. The symptoms were almost identical and they couldn’t save her little guy!
I’m likely taking Bob to the vet again for bloodtests. Eventhough he seems fine and playful now, I’m worried what will appen once he’s off the antibiotics in a few days!

          • Profile photo of Jennifer in NH Jennifer in NH

I’m crossing my fingers, my heart, my toes and wishing upon all shooting stars that your Bob is allright.

Great Dane, take Bob to the vet immediately! Then contact Spa Select to see if you can go and kick someone (don’t tell them your intent). I would think that if you catch it in time, he won’t have permanent damage but better to call your vet.

    This was mentioned here yesterday…

**FDA asks if pet food tainted on purpose**

By ANDREW BRIDGES, Associated Press Writer
Fri Apr 20, 1:24 AM ET

WASHINGTON – Imported ingredients used in recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their apparent protein content, federal officials said Thursday.

That’s one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods.

In California, state agriculture officials placed a hog farm under quarantine after melamine was found in pig urine there. Additional testing was under way to determine whether the chemical was present in the meat produced by American Hog Farm in Ceres since April 3, the state Department of Food and Agriculture said.

So far, melamine’s been found in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China. Media reports from South Africa suggest a third pet food ingredient, corn gluten, used in that country also was contaminated with melamine. That tainted ingredient has not been found in the United States, the FDA said.

FDA investigators were awaiting visas that would allow them to visit the Chinese plants where the vegetable protein ingredients were produced.

“Melamine was found in all three of those — it would certainly lend credibility to the theory that it may be intentional. That will be one of the theories we will pursue when we get into the plants in China,” Stephen Sundlof, the FDA’s chief veterinarian, told reporters.

Chinese authorities have told the FDA that the wheat gluten was an industrial product not meant for pet food, Sundlof said. Still, melamine can skew test results to make a product appear more protein-rich than it really is, he added. That raises the possibility the contamination was deliberate.

“What we expect to do with our inspections in China will answer some of those questions,” said Michael Rogers (news, bio, voting record), director of the division of field investigations within the FDA’s office of regulatory affairs.

Wilbur-Ellis Co., the U.S. importer of the tainted rice protein, said Thursday it was recalling all the ingredient it had distributed to five U.S. pet food manufacturers. The San Francisco company in turn urged its customers to recall any products that may be on store shelves.

So far, just two of those companies have done so: Natural Balance Pet Foods and Blue Buffalo Co.

Natural Balance, of Pacoima, Calif., announced a limited recall Monday of its Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

Blue Buffalo, of Wilton, Conn., followed Thursday by recalling 5,044 bags of its Spa Select Kitten dry food. The company intercepted most of the kitten food before it reached distribution centers, company co-founder Billy Bishop said.

FDA officials would not release the names of the other two manufacturers that Wilbur-Ellis supplied, citing its ongoing investigation.

The FDA could not provide updated numbers of pet deaths or injuries due to the contaminated pet food. The agency has received more than 15,000 calls since the first recall was announced more than a month ago.

The FDA and Agriculture Department also were investigating whether some pet food made by one of the five companies supplied by Wilbur-Ellis was diverted for use as hog feed after it was found unsuitable for pet consumption.

“We understand it did make it into some hog feed and we are following up on that as well,” Sundlof said.

Later Thursday, California officials said they believe the melamine at the quarantined hog farm came from rice protein concentrate imported from China by Diamond Pet Food’s Lathrop facility, which produces products under the Natural Balance brand and sold salvage pet food to the farm for pig feed.

“Although all animals appear healthy, we are taking this action out of an abundance of caution,” State Veterinarian Richard Breitmeyer said in a statement. “It is unknown if the chemical will be detected in meat.”

Officials were investigating American Hog Farm’s sales records to determine who may be affected by the quarantine, said Steve Lyle, a spokesman for the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The 1,500-animal farm operates as a “custom slaughterhouse,” which means it generally does not supply meat to commercial outlets.

“Mostly it is not so-called mainstream pork. This is an operation that sells to folks who come in and want a whole pig,” said Lyle said.

Officials urged those who purchased pigs from American Hog Farm since April 3 to not consume the product until further notice.

Dr. Mark Horton, state public health officer, said so far “evidence suggests a minimal health risk to persons who may have consumed pork” from the farm.

A man who answered the phone for American Hog Farm late Thursday declined to comment and referred calls to state officials. Phone calls to Diamond Pet Food’s Lathrop facility and Meta, Mo., headquarters were not immediately returned.

    • Mom to Tiga and the gang

and so it continues. They feed hogs the food our pets can’t eat, and then we eat the pork? We really may be in big BIG trouble guys. This may have happened all over the country.

      • mayra

If I were the FDA, I’d be testing human food too. Not just meat from the animals that ate the tainted feed, but also foods that have gluten or rice protein added to it. They’ve been telling us how it didn’t make it into the human food supply, but I’m not buying the argument. Not when every day we hear from them that what was safe yesterday isn’t safe today.

*mouth gaping* That’s all I can say. So glad my boys aren’t sick right now, but I’m also becoming worried about myself!!! This is getting out of hand. LONDON (Reuters) – Inventors have created a soap infused with caffeine which helps users wake up in the morning.

The soap, called Shower Shock, supplies the caffeine equivalent of two cups of coffee per wash, with the stimulant absorbed naturally through the skin, manufacturers say.

“Tired of waking up and having to wait for your morning (coffee) to brew?” ask the makers,

Scented with peppermint oil, each bar is designed to provide a stimulant boost within five minutes.

    **Four-legged duck now three-legged**

Stumpy the famous four-legged duck has lost one of his claims to fame.

He is now a three-legged duck after getting one of his extra limbs caught in his pen, reports Metro.

Stumpy caught the media’s attention worldwide after he was born at the Warrawee Duck Farm in the New Forest, Hampshire.

Farm owner Nicky Janaway said: “He’s now only got three legs and a stump, which means he’s Stumpy by name and stumpy by nature.

“He got the leg caught in the pen fencing, he clean snapped it but he had no idea anything had happened so he may not have had any sensation in it.

“We whisked him off to the vet who finished off what he had started and cleaned it up.

“The good thing that has come out of it is that he can now roam the farm and he and his girlfriend duck, Alice, are harassing the others.

“It has given him his freedom because if he had got his leg stuck in a hedge like he did in the pen, I would never have found him. The other leg is tucked up so it has no chance of getting stuck.”

Ohio Mother And Daughter Give Birth Within Minutes, Both Delivered By The Same Doctor

MANSFIELD, Ohio, Apr. 20, 2007(AP) They may be uncle and nephew, but two newborns may feel more like brothers after being born just minutes apart.

Theresa Crouse, 39, gave birth to a son at MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital at 11:20 a.m. Monday. At 11:27, her daughter, Carrie Gresh, had her own baby boy at the same hospital _ and delivered by the same doctor.

Gresh, 21, said the two women suffered through morning sickness together and thought their babies would arrive hours apart.

Crouse said she went into induced labor because of a medical condition and her daughter’s labor was induced at the same time.

Crouse called her little boy Caleb Izus Crouse a miracle. “I had been wanting to have a second child for more than 20 years,” she said. “I was told I wouldn’t be able to have any more children.”

Gresh said it’s going to be interesting watching new brother and her boy, Landin, grow up and go to school together. The extended family currently lives in the same duplex.

“I think this will be great,” Crouse said. “They’ll grow up like brothers.”

**Novelty Phone Causes Stir At Post Office**
Novelty Phone Causes Ticking Sound Inside Package, Creating Bomb Scare At Mo., Post Office

WRIGHT CITY, Mo., Apr. 20, 2007
(AP) Telephones typically ring, not tick, so a man who went to the post office to pick up a novelty phone he ordered over the Internet was alarmed that the package was ticking.

It turned out that the phone _ shaped like Winnie the Pooh _ had a feature the customer didn’t know about: An incoming call causes Winnie’s head to spin, and the feature apparently had been activated during shipping.

The ticking that prompted evacuation of the Wright City post office Thursday morning was Winnie’s head repeatedly hitting the side of the package, said Cpl. Julie Scerine, a spokeswoman for the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Police and members of the bomb squad were called about 6:45 a.m. when the man retrieving the package noticed the unexpected sound. Wright City is about 45 miles west of St. Louis.

“It was pretty distinctly ticking,” Police Chief Don Wickenhauser said. “And he didn’t want to pick it up.”

When authorities contacted the sender, he verified that it was nothing sinister.

Scerine said authorities were both amused and relieved when they opened the package.

“I guess the moral of the story is before you send electronics, take the batteries out,” she said.

Is Adam their brother? I didn’t know that. If he is, he’s one of the good ones. If not the only. I haven’t cared for Alec since I first saw him on SNL. And it seems he’s been going downhill ever since. Which one was on Celebrity Fit Club? Was it William? I can’t remember. All I can say is he may not see her again, but I doubt he’ll get out of paying child support!

!!!!!!WOW!!!!!! I’ve woke up this morning w/blurred vision. Seeing triples!!!!!! Absolutely Gorgeous Tuxedos!! They’re coloring is identical to the new feral cat out in my yard. I’m calling him Naughty Boy for now since he got his runt sister pregnant. Baxter & him could be brothers.

Need to catch that Naughty Boy and clip those kitten making apparatus and then get the sister fixed. You will be knee deep in kittens by the fall.

He is partially domesticated. Only comes to me outside. One day he was curious enuf to come in the house. I had a carrier all waiting for him & his pregnant sister. Well, needless to say, he was too smart for me. I almost got a Zorro across the front of me. Shortly after that I was able to get his sister in one. When I got her to the vet w/voucher in hand, they said she was too far along that they wouldn’t do for reasons that it would end up a live birth & I’d be taking premies home. I’ll get another opportunity tho. All the nice people here on TDK have really given the emotional strength to keep on pluggin at it. Thanks all

I use Friskies, dry and wet and 9 lives wet for my 2 babies. So far so good here too. Wishing the best to all kitties in this time of confusion and all parents as well.

The 3 mousers are adorable today!

Oh, My favorites…the beautiful Black and White kitties. I just love to look at all the unusual markings they have!! Borrow a trap from a rescue group and get the Mom kitty spayed and release her back and keep her fed. While you are having her spayed, put a flea treatment on and give her the needed vaccines. I do this a lot and it is so wonderful to know you have helped to stop the populating of homeless kitties!! Need help? Check out Alley Cat Allies on the web.

I am lucky enuf to have a trap. I’m trying to find her brood w/out her knowing so I can gather them up as well.

Brenda-the only problem is Momma is still nursing out there somewhere. Too many hungry raccoons around here right now to leave the babies alone. Took Runt once w/voucher for spaying-she was too far along. couldn’t get cage built sooner than her birthing. I know nothing about kitten-raising,never had them that young.

  52. Oh God guys I need prayer please. My “friends” have decided to call people in to break up this house saying that I won’t get a job in time and that I shouldn’t waste my life taking care of my elderly parents. That I need to get rid of my cats, etc. I’d rather lose an arm or leg than my cats. I’m crying as I write this I don’t know what to do.
Please pray for me and mine.

    • Profile photo of Jennifer in NH Jennifer in NH

My thoughts and energy and prayers are with you. these people are not your friends if they are trying to break up your home. Caring for elderly parents is NOT a waste of your life. Unless they need special medical attention frequently, having you take care of them is probably the happiest and healthiest situation. I don’t believe anyone wants to go into an assisted living or nursing home. People’s souls are in their homes and with their families. Stay strong.

    • Profile photo of LeeAnne in FL 3/25 LeeAnne in FL

Marsha, Bitty and Bud my thoughts and prayers are with you. Who on earth is telling you that taking care of your elderly parents is a “waste of life”?? We only get one set of parents, and it is definitely NOT a waste taking care of them during their times of need…..My prayers are heading your way right away….

    • Profile photo of HarleyVixen HV in HMB, CA

Prayers and positive thoughts coming right to you. You might want to relate more of your situation so that your ‘family’ here can offer something more constructive. Hang in there!

    • Profile photo of gatakitty Ginny in Cat Spring

Marsha, my prayers are with you. You are dead-on by using the quotation marks. These folks are NOT your friends! Your parents nurtured you in the years when you could not take care of yourself (obviously you were nurtured, judging from all you do now), you are merely giving back the love they gave from you. Your cats sustain you emotionally, and are proven to reduce blood pressure (check out studies in the New England Journal of Medicine and other sources). What IS a waste of your life is listening to deadbeats like that. Give these $%^$%^s the attention they deserve (none), and keep on doing the right thing. God will reward you. He has already given you supporting friends right here.

    • Profile photo of Renee in Arkansas Renee in Arkansas

So sorry for your troubles. Sending good thoughts your way and hope things work out for you. That doesn’t sound like very good friends to me, especially if they want you to get rid of your cats. I don’t know the whole story but if you want to take care of your parents, that’s your business, not theirs. Hugs to you. May you find the strength to get through this, just take it one day at a time and hug your kitties. They always provide comfort when needed.

    • Profile photo of gladys gladys

What on earth kind of “friends” are THOSE?? Won’t get a job “in time” for who or what?? You’re over 21, are you not?? So how can these people think they dictate your life choices–and those of your parents?? It’s things like this that just make me glad I’m a hermit–people have a way of nosing into things that are NONE of their business, and it’s almost never to anyone’s good when they do.

Hugs and prayers, Marsha…hang in there. (And tell these so-called “friends” to butt out!)

Chin up Marsha. If I were you I would talk to a legal advocate and get advised on my rights. There is no reason for you to have to get rid of your cats as long as they are permitted in your residence and they are well cared for. Your so called “friends” are just blowing smoke up your a##. All bark no bit. You have my positive thoughts X3.

Marsha, you are all ok and the cats are well taken care of? Whatever is going on, you need a lawyer ASAP, if you sense someone (or more) trying to control your actions. Please let us know a little more, and we can brainstorm with you. At least one lawyer is in our TDK community.

        • Thanks so much, I know my true friends are here.A so called “friend” of mine who looks down at the way I live w/ my 10 well taken care of cats, called elderly services andthey came in. Elderly services is saying b/c My dad has respiratory symptoms that living w/ animals is bad for him. It’s not, this house is big and I keep it clean. My parents are in bad financial shape but I am planning on getting a job asap. I’m a nurse and I could get a well paying job quickly but they think it’s “too big a load” for me to carry. THAT’S MY CHOICE!!! I feel too beat down to fight honestly and am at quite a disadvantage w/o much income at the moment. My parents depend on me a lot and I love being with them they’ve been wonderful to me.I don’t see how they can do this. I’m just devastated.

Your parents still have a say in their lives. I can’t think that the state could just come in and dictate how and where someone can live.

I know you are tired, but call a lawyer or find an advocacy group for the elderly. The will have the resources to help you and you won’t feel so alone.

Don’t give up Marsha, ever. I know you’re tired, but please don’t give up

Can you get your dad’s doctor to verify that your cat family won’t aggravate his respiratory symptoms. Are your parents eligible for medicare/medicaid or social security. Foodstamps might also be a possiblity. All of those things could help out with the finances.

If a state or county agency is trying to forcibly relocate your parents, there should be a process for them to request a hearing. Try contacting your local Legal Aid office to see if you can get legal counsel through it.

            Good luck and stay strong!

          • Profile photo of gatakitty Ginny in Cat Spring

Instinct, the sad truth is that the state can totally wreck Marsha’s life, now that they’ve been called. In recent years (and due to some very high-profile cases of elderly abuse), Adult Protective Services have the same powers (and “guilty-even-after-proven-innocent” stigma-giving ability) that Child Protective Services has.

Marsha, no matter how tired you are, contact the local AARP NOW! Get their recommendations for a VERY good lawyer to protect your interests and your parents’. Once you have been exonerated, sue the daylights out of your former friend in an effort to recoup the costs, which could be extensive. DO NOT DELAY–IT COULD COST YOU EVERYTHING!

I’m sorry if I sound alarmist, but now that the state is involved, time is of the essence. My prayers for you are now at least tripled! Hang in there, girlfriend.

      Dear Marsha, Bitty and Bud:
When I hear about things like this I wonder what has become of our society that we do not have time to honor those who cared for us when we were most vulnerable. It is our gift to them. However, it can be overwhelming and perhaps your “friends” aren’t trying to get you to give up your noble efforts but maybe take some time off for yourself. I am sure your parents wouldn’t mind if you had fun once and a while. There are services to day sit with your parents while you take some time off to be just you. Then sue this “friend” for all that they have to teach them to mind their own “fricken” business. There are so many jobs out their for nurses so they shouldn’t be worried about your landing a job and all. Who made them the judge and jury?

    • Rumi

I don’t understand — assuming you’re an adult, Marsha, there’s not a damn thing your supposed “friends” can do! You have the right to live your life as you choose, as do your parents (assuming they still have all their mental faculties…no offense intended, I just don’t know anything about your parents).

Tell your “friends” to bugger off!

Marsha, I have tears in my eyes just reading your post, and those of the dear people here. I am in total agreement. I don’t know who these “friends” are, but they need to back off and let you live your life as you see fit. Do get outside help; especially on the legal and medical levels. Happines means different things to different people, and if you and your parents (and your kitties) are happy, especially since you keep the place up, etc., then they are not your friends. True friends would be helping you whereever and however they could.

    Triple cuteness overload!

I looked at cat food websites for hours yesterday—the regular type of Friskies wet is OK-it was the types with gravy and “Special Cuts” that had the recall. The dry is OK.

Several months ago when I was short of cash I bought the “Special Kitty” brand (was a recall) from Walmart for my feral colony. When I put it in their bowl, they gave me a look of ” You REALLY expect us to eat this crap?!” They seemed to know it was bad for them!

I am wiping away tears—I read the article about the deliberate use of the melamine-stuff. It had a picture of a little boy holding a picture of his first kitten, who died at 9 months old from the bad food—just broke my heart! God forgive me for feeling such hate for the Chinese!

**81-year-old British granny begins jail term to abusive behaviour**
    April 19, 2007

An 81-year-old British grandmother dubbed the “neighbour from hell” began a six-month jail term Wednesday, a day after being found guilty of a bizarre hate-filled campaign which included dropping her trousers at her next-door neighbours.

Dorothy Evans, from Abergavenny, South Wales, shouted abuse, struck Angela and Roberto Casa with her walking stick and told their 13-year-old daughter she was a witch and would kill the family pet dog.

Evans was given an Anti-Social Behavioural Order but persistently breached it with further bizarre acts including attempting to run the couple off the road on several occassions.

The pensioner’s harassment of her neighbours began when she blamed the Casa family for a flood which prevented her selling her house.

The judge presiding over the case, Roderick Denyer QC said: “These offences all involve neighbours of yours. It’s abundantly clear you will not change.

It seems to me, despite your age and despite your infirmities, you have deliberately, for a period going on for 10 years, made life a misery for your neighbours.”

He added that the sentence would have been much more severe had she been younger.

“I don’t really care what the sentence is. I just hope she never speaks to me again,” a relieved Mrs. Casa said.

“I just want to be able to get up in the morning and go out into my garden without having to worry about abuse.”

The elephant, named Alexander, tips the scales at over 5,000 kilos (5.5 tons) and is a stud who has already made the rounds of the European zoo circuit. At the moment three elephants are pregnant by him and he has another six descendants.

**”Robofalcons” to take on UK city’s pesky pigeons**
Fri Apr 20, 9:14 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) – A flock of robotic falcons has been dispatched to tackle an influx of obese pigeons who are increasing in number and size thanks to an unnatural diet of fastfood.

The mechanical birds — called ‘Robops’ — have been placed on rooftop locations around the British city of Liverpool, and will flap their wings and squawk loudly to scare the problem pigeons away.

The initiative was launched to deal with the birds who are now considered a nuisance in the city, flying at people and leaving droppings everywhere, Liverpool council said.

The pigeon problem has been exacerbated by residents in the city feeding the birds — whose natural diet is seeds and insects — with take-away leftovers. “We need to get the message across that anyone who feeds the birds intentionally, or occasionally with leftovers such as sausage rolls or burgers, is responsible for our streets being so crowded with these birds,” Berni Turner, Liverpool city council’s executive member for the environment said.

The falcons, created by a Scottish company, resemble a Peregrine Falcon – which is a natural predator of pigeons.

As a result of the scaring techniques and people not feeding the birds, it is hoped that the pigeon population will move out of the city center and into Liverpool’s parks and green spaces.

The Council’s Environmental Health manager Andy Hull said that the scheme was an attempt to improve the health of the pigeons, as their current diet is unhealthy and dangerous.

However, experts have condemned the scheme, saying that the council needs to tackle the source of the problem, rather than the symptoms.

Emma Haskell, Director of PiCAS UK, the leading independent advisory body on the issue of bird control in Britain said her organization had done studies with mechanical deterrents and had found them to be completely ineffective.

“We believe that this is a complete waste of time…and a waste of money,” she said. “Pigeons are a highly intelligent bird and they soon realize that these mechanical things are not a threat.”

Liverpool has been named European Capital of Culture in 2008, but the city council currently uses the equivalent of 88 man-hours a day cleaning droppings from streets and buildings, at a cost of 160,000 a year.

“The robotic hawks are almost laughable as a method of control and the cost associated with buying and installing the product… simply cannot be justified,” PiCAS said.

**Authorities Say Drunken Driver Crashed Into Police Station**

    POSTED: 10:44 am PDT April 20, 2007

PHILADELPHIA — A drunken driver veered onto a sidewalk and crashed into a police station, knocking bricks loose from the building, police said.

The headquarters of the city’s 18th Police District was still structurally sound, said Lt. Joel Dales, a district supervisor.

Investigators said the 22-year-old driver had been arguing with a woman in another car before the crash early Thursday. He was charged with driving under the influence.

**1st All-Girl Team Set For Science Finals**
Team Also First All-Black, All-Girl Finalist Group

    POSTED: 12:27 pm PDT April 18, 2007

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Members of a high school science team from Buffalo, N.Y., said even though they already have a couple of firsts under their belt, the most important one would be winning a national science competition.

The students from Buffalo Prep are the first all-girl team to make the finals in the 17-year history of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl in Washington.

The students — Sylvie Bizimungu, Kerris Sease, Bianca Coleman, Andrea Finley and Olivia Cox — also are the first all-black, all-girl group in the finals.

But they said beating the 63 other teams is the real goal.

The Energy Department said boys outnumber girls in the finals by four to one.

Organizers said the goal is to encourage students to pursue careers in math and science.

The competition this month involves a “Jeopardy” game show format with questions on biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science and math.

The winners get a trip to France.

    **Drought Advisory Meeting Rained Out**
Members Didn’t Want To Drive In Storm

    POSTED: 4:18 pm PDT April 19, 2007

HELENA, Mont. — Thursday’s meeting of the Montana Drought Advisory Committee was canceled, because of rain.

The rain-out message was sent to council members by the office of Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger. The e-mail described the rain and snow Montana has been getting this spring as “wonderful inclement weather.”

Jackie Williams, executive assistant to the lieutenant governor, said drought committee members didn’t want to travel through the storms.

The next meeting of the Montana Drought Advisory board is next month, weather permitting.

It was a good thing Beth Zaug and her fiancé both shared a love of pit bulls. In November 2004, when the couple visited their local shelter in hopes of finding a pooch to join them in their new home, the decision was that much easier. “We’ve both had pit bulls in the past and share a passion for the misunderstood breed,” Beth explains.

There were plenty of pups at the shelter, but one scruffy reddish-brown pit caught Beth‘s eye. “Her name was Sunshine,” Beth says. “And she was extremely shy. She curled up into a ball inside her cage and wouldn’t make eye contact with anyone.”

The Zaugs learned that Sunshine had been abandoned when she was still a puppy, and spent several days in a field. After being rescued, she languished in the local shelter for almost nine months. “I fell in love right away with this withdrawn, quirky girl,” Beth remembers.

The first few months at home were not easy. Sunshine was nervous around new people and whenever she was left alone, and she frequently soiled inside the house. The Zaugs also noticed her ear was inflamed—but that was minor compared to the problem of her hair falling out. “We treated the ear infection,” Beth says, “but the balding appeared to be an allergy that took months to treat.” As for the pooch’s nerves, Beth recalls, “My husband and I vowed not to give up on our girl.”

It has been over two years now, and Sunshine has left her anxieties behind. She quickly makes friends with people and other dogs. She has also formed an exceptional bond with Beth’s husband and often won’t leave his side.

“Sunshine is the light of my life,” Beth beams. “She makes our family complete.”

New message just to say that i left a very long one about rapping and socializing ferals, but it’s appended to a much earlier comment so folks who check back and only look at the bottom of the qeue for new post might miss it. I really hope this helps not only the “other” Angela, but anyone who is doing or thinking about doing work with feral kitties.
And, oh boy, are those three little tuxies adorable. I’m missing my giant Tuxie (Tux Ritter), an older tomcat I trapped and loved for just three years before he died…but I already have 7 other rescues, so some other lucky folks will get to love those Trixie, Teddy and Baxter.

Great news! Hubby and I have decided to adopt again. It all started when we heard about a pure-bred female that needed a home. Some doofusey people decided to buy one to breed her. Now they are moving and decided to put her down if they couldn’t find a home for her right away. All I can say is “?????????” Anyway, we opened ourselves up as a last-resort home, but they eventually found a good home for her. But we got so excited about having a new kitty that we are going next Saturday to get one from All Creatures no-kill shelter! I can’t wait!

hi all I had the day off work so I got here during the day, been checking the site and keeping up on all the recalls and the kittens have been as beautiful and cute as ever, just love this pic the middle one is my favorite. the feral I took in and treated for the eye infection is back outside and doing well he hangs around but not to close another new one has showed up a black and white tux, havent got close enought to see if it is male or female. but it has found the food so i know it is getting plenty to eat. has anyone heard anything about purina natural blends chicken and oatmeal formula? i bought someof this for my kids and one of them threw up all over during the night and it was green and slimey, took the food away and everyone seems fine just not sure what is wrong keeping close eye on everyone

    • 12 PAWZ in FL

Several weeks ago, I bought Purina Naturals,w/ vitamins & minerals. Only one kitty would eat it. Several minutes later he hurled it all over the kitchen floor. Seemed to be o.k. afterwards. The next morning I found 6 clear and slimy vomits. Took him to the vet…….they kept him for several hours, running tests, etc. Nothing was found to be abnormal, thankfully. He is FIV positive, so I am always watching out for anything strange going on. Sure gave me a scare…….and I kept the bag of food, in case it should be one to become on the recall list.

mine are all fiv neg, and so far today eveyone seems fine but my cats never throwup. I had a cat a few years ago that would hurl all the time, but the ones i have now dont thats what worried me it was so nasty it took the finnish off the wood floor. so glad i was off work today to be here to keep an eye on them so far so good

Melamine poisioning for profit: it’s not just about pet food anymore!

Here’s a piece about a pig farm that’s been quarantined after melamine was found in the pig urine:

The human food chain may be contaminated, and we’ll be the last ones to know. The FDA has very little actual responsibility here, and they’re stonewalling about what they do know:

    Spinach-Mushroom Lasagna

For even more mushroom flavor, add a few dry porcini mushrooms to the sauce.

    9 lasagna noodles
    2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 lb. spinach, stems removed, chopped*
    1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/4 teaspoons freshly ground pepper
    2 eggs
    2 lb. ricotta cheese
1/4 cup (1 oz.) freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
    2 cups sliced mushrooms
    1 onion, finely chopped
    2 garlic cloves, minced
    1 lb. plum tomatoes, chopped
    1/3 cup red wine
1 1/2 cups (6 oz.) shredded mozzarella cheese

    1. Heat oven to 400°F. Grease 13×9-inch pan. Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions.

    2. Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in large skillet over medium heat until hot. Add spinach; cook 5 minutes. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon each of the salt and pepper. Set aside.

    3. In medium bowl, combine eggs, ricotta and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheeses. Stir in 3/4 teaspoon of the salt and 1/2 teaspoon of the pepper. Set aside.

    4. Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil in large saucepan over medium heat until hot. Add mushrooms, onion and garlic; cook about 5 minutes or until onion is transparent.

    5. Reduce heat to low. Add tomatoes, wine, remaining 1/2 teaspoon each of the salt and pepper; cook 10 minutes or until sauce is slightly thickened.

    6. To assemble, arrange 3 cooked lasagna noodles over bottom of greased pan. Spoon and spread 1/3 of ricotta mixture over noodles. Top with 1/3 each of the spinach, sauce and mozzarella. Repeat layers twice. Cover pan with foil.

    7. Bake 45 minutes or until hot and lightly browned. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

TIP *Two (10-oz.) pkg. frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry, can be substituted for fresh spinach.

        Elene in Pa,
Hello and how are you? I hope your weather is getting some better. I seen on the news, where it has been storming in your area. It has been warming up here a little bit everyday, although it is supposed to rain most of next week. You said, you are a vegetarian. I have a recipe for Meatless burritos, that can be fixed in a crockpot. It was sent to me by a newsletter, that I get. I don’t know if you like burritos or can eat them. Just leave me a note sometime and I’ll post the recipe next week, if you’re interested.

Hi Renee, The weather here is beautiful. Spring has finally arrived in all its glory. Yesterday (Friday) it was in the mid 70’s and I got to cut my grass for the first time this year. My south facing gardens are in bloom, and the later bulbs like tulips are ready to burst open. Love it.

I’m not a big Mexican food fan but I know many on this site are. Everyone is trying to cut down on meat fats so posting a meatless burrito recipe would be a good idea.

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Cute Tuxes! Re: Mama cat, have you tried a live trap? Many vets and/or feed stores will rent you one for under $10/week, or Harbor Freight has them much cheaper than stores. There is also a group, Feral Cat Coalition(?, unsure of name), that will spay feral cats that are released back, since many will not adapt to homes with people. Kitties are cute, but we want them to have nice happy homes, not short unhealthy lives.
