Yee-HAH, I’m first!
Our red cat Sammy was born with a kink in his tail, too and he is really wild! It is about 3 ” from the end of his tail.
What a cutie-Codie is.
I COULD have been first, I checked early yesterday and there were no posts and I laughed…all you cats were sleeping in or out scouting for birds….ha
Kinky tails…now that’s a good line for conversation among us KINKYs. hello to all!
Such a cutie pie – so cute it hurts OOOWWWW!
Hey MerD!
Thank you for the recipes! Been reading through them and planing dinner already! How many TDK’ers had pizza last night?? I had too much of it myself……
Leftover chicken, but there was beer. LOL
Parts of various movies, we were testing the screen.
Codie is a real cutie.
Your new system sounds awesome. I’ll bring the popcorn, and Baileys mint and regular for the irish coffee LOL
Sounds great! What time should we expect you?
around 2, the day after we all move in to our TDK Enclave
My birthday dinner was McDonalds ;-(
By the time I left work, it was too late for anything else, and most restaurants here are closed on Mondays. My husband, however, has promised something “special” this weekend. Hmmm…
Good Chicken recipe
Here is a chicken recipe that also includes the use of
popcorn as a stuffing – imagine that! When I found
this recipe, I thought it as perfect for people like
me, who just are not sure how to tell when
Poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out. Give
this a try.
BAKED STUFFED CHICKEN
6-7 lb. Baking chicken
1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good.)
1 cup uncooked popcorn
(ORVILLE REDENBACHERS LOW FAT) salt/pepper
to taste
______________________________
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush chicken well with
melted butter, salt and pepper. Fill cavity with
stuffing and popcorn. Place in baking pan with the
neck end toward the back of the oven. Listen for the
popping sounds.
When the chicken’s ass blows the oven door open and
the chicken flies across the room, it is done.
And you thought I couldn’t cook π
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! LOL!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
that is hilarious- everyone in the office is looking at me like im crazy i cant stop laughing tears streaming down face….
BTY Codie is adorable π
Too funny, MerD! I got a great visual from this…lolololo
Got to put it into the cookbook!
That’s hilarious
I was seriously considering, planning to stop at the grocery store on the way home. Little did I know I was about to be punked–
GRRR! I also thought this was a real recipe! haha! I love trying new things, but was wondering how the popcorn hulls would ever soften up enough in the stuffing! Good one! (I’m such a dork!)
And to think I almost didn’t read this because I thought it was a rela recipe. This is too funny.
make that “real recipe”
Oh gawd . . . the mental image is, well, explosive. Shame on you for forcing me to double over at my computer to keep from laughing out loud in the library, MerD!
The bachelor in me is going “well just make the popcorn separately and have it with!”
Heh.
Great! Why do some people say cooking is just another chore?
Ginny,
Hope you at least ordered a “happy meal”??? (That’s all I order at McD’s…. I like the toys!!) Sad ain’t it??? I’ve got all the pet shop kittens and the cats (little stuffed ones with big eyes!!) I REFUSE TO GROW UP!! LOL!!!
The only time I ordered a Happy Meal, they didn’t give me a toy!
…tickles Codie’s tummy for consolation…
I get Happy Meals when they have Beanie Babies–my kitties LOVE them! π
I also get Happy Meals with Beanie Babies. My favorites are the tiny Barbie’s they used to have.
My brother is a McD’s manager in Ga. He sent me 3 complete sets of Beanie Babies from Happy Meals. They are in a box in my closet waiting for the Beanie Baby resurgence (hey, Cabbage Patch Kids and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are hot again, can Beanie Babies be far behind?) As soon as interest waxes again, look out EBay!
My sister works with autistic children and uses the tiny toys from McDonald’s as rewards for the kids. I gave her all the Barbies and Beanie Babies for her clients and the kids love them!
my birthday was on Feb. 8th and i didn’t have anything fancy then either..untill the weekend
and last night my hubby and I had Polish Sausage and Saurkraught yumm!!!
Funny stuff, we had that Sunday night. Mmmm
I miss fresh Polish sausage since moving to the South. I can get smoked but nothing beats the taste of fresh with saurkraut w/caroway seeds. I fry my kraut in butter till it is a light golden brown.
I love weinies & kraut with fried taters, beans and cornbread.
WOW!! reminds me of being a kid again..where in Arkansas..Renee? I grew up in Newport.
That Codies a cute one!
Hi Ginny, sorry you had McDonalds for your birthday dinner. Let us know what hubby does for you over the weekend. Hope it’s something you like!
*Snuggles and kisses Codie and slips him quietly into backpack*
He better follow up on that promise, Ginny. Birthday at MickeyDees (as we call them here in California) is no fun.
Hey, if you are with the one you love and the love is returned to me it wouldn’t matter what you eat. We always celebrate birthdays on a Sunday closet to the day so many b-days I celebrated alone cooking my own dinner. That is okay I love me!
Hey Susan,
I feel your pain….and you know what?? I love me too! I may not be perfect, but my fuzzbutts love me!!
You both have a good points. It is the thought that counts.
Susan–when is your birthday?
Susan in GA,
I know you said , your birthday is in March, but what day? If you don’t mind telling us. I can make you a cyber cake(an online cake) since I can’t deliver it in person.
It has always been on the first day of spring but this year it is the day before on the 20th. I used to say I was born on the first day of spring but I am more like the last rose of summer. My bro’s is this Friday we are traveling to Savannah to celebrate their grandson’s 2nd b-day. We will be home on Sunday so I’ll catch with y’all then. The kids moved from Charleston, SC when he was assigned to his new base at Ft. Hunter. I couldn’t visit before as they had just one bathroom on the second floor. This place is a ranch with two potties. I’ll leave Sweetie Petey enough food and water but I am going to miss that lil stinker like crazy.
Ginny, I am so sorry you didn’t get a special Birthday dinner to go with all those Birthday wishes yesterday. I hope this weekend more than makes up for it.
Happy Birthday Ginny. I hope the weekend is special for you.
Good one MerD!
I knew something had to be up! lol I got a good laugh out of that.
Snow day yesterday. We had tomato soup and grilled cheese – yum! Kinky Codie is adorable! Ah, to be laying in the summer sun; I am so looking forward to summer…
Joan…that’s one of my all time favorites. When I was growing up, my Mom always prepared this when we need “comfort food” — after an illness or bad day…
Oh yeah… me too! Still love ‘red soup’…as my son calls it,
Yum! Even better when you dunk the grilled cheese into the soup!
Geeeeez! I’m hungry again……..
I am now “hankering” for a grilled cheese sandwich. Make mine with swiss cheese or gruyerer cheese Yummy!
I love tomato soup with open faced grilled swiss on rye and if it isn’t on a Friday in Lent a bit of crumbled bacon on top of the sandwich oh my, oh my!
“…a nice MLT (mutton, lettuce and tomato) when the mutton is nice and lean and the tomatoes are just ripe [smack, smack] ahh..POIKY”
“The chocolate helps it go down easier…..”
Ah man!! Ya beat me to it!! Good Morning TDK’ers!!
Cody is very cute and he looks like a real character! Soft belly snurfles for Cody!
Good morning Codie, you sweet little fuzz-butt. I hope that you keep your family warm with this cold, cold winter we’ve been having. (I can never think of anything clever to say!)
How is everyone else doing? Have a great day!
PS – Thank you to everyone who visited Charlie and Mamie yesterday. I’m going to try to put up Tiger and Sunny later.
Ooh!! I haven’t seen Mamie, yet!!! I’ll go check her out! Thanks to everyone who gave a shout-out to my lovely boys, also! They just love how many friends they’ve made. Oh, and I forgot to repost my sister’s kitties, yesterday. You can find little Foosa (or Fat Foosa!) at http://www.catster.com/cats/479846
Her sisters are attached.
Codie is so lovely! He looks wired in this pic!!! Like he could jump up and pounce at any moment. I’ve never had an orangie and I’d like to, someday. Maybe I’ll be picked by one sometime. *sigh… AmyLou dreams of what her orangie kitty will look like*
Oh, what an elegant cat Foosa is, such a pretty, and gentle looking face. Awwwww….
Blessings to you for giving her such a nice home. π
Foosa is gorgeous! I especially love the part about her standing and balancing on her hind legs. She is a real beauty and you are both lucky. Thank you for taking her in.
I love the last picture of the tuxedo and tabby snuggling. Looks just like my Mr. Bounce and Trixie! BTW, I left treats for your kitties.
My sister wishes she could label that. Those two sweet little girls are Foosa’s kittens that she mentioned in the bio. They are named Gabby and Alley and live with her boyfriends’ family…
Love that picture of Foosa sitting up! She looks like a meerkat, even though we know there’s no such thing as a “mere cat.”
tee hee!
Maybe Mere-lee wonderful.
Very funny Ann F. π
Foosa has such a sweet story..What a wonderful baby!
Good morning TDKers! Just to let you all know, I have a first rough draft of the cook book ready. Drop me an email at π
TDKcookbook AT Gmail DOT com
Will send you an email shortly MerD. Thanks for doing this! We all appreciate you taking your time and effort to help those of us who love to cook and more importantly, love to eat!! Thanks again.
To Codie:
He’s a very Kinky boy……the kind you don’t take home to mama!!
What an orange cutie!!
When I lived in Aiea (HI), there was a feral cat with a short, “Z”-shaped tail. Whenever my husband and I took a walk, he’d run up to us and rub around our legs, but never allowed us to touch him. I always wondered what kind of accident maimed his tail like that (we had decided on it being crushed by a car; maybe one whose brakes had slipped).
Then one day, we saw a litter of kittens, all with the same “z”-shaped bobbed tail. We realized two things simultaneously: 1, that the tail was no accident; and 2, we knew who the kittens’ daddy was!
Lots of Siamese have kinked tails. There are multiple legends associated with it. One is that the princess was bathing in the spring and needed a place to put her rings. So she put them on her loyal meezer’s tail who cocked it so as not to loose them.
Another is that 2 Siamese were to guard a precious goblet in the monastery and wrapped their tails around it to keep it safe and secure.
Some of my Maine Coons have “kinks” in their tails. My Freddy has a “knob” on the end of his tail, but it is camouflaged by his very fluffy tail. (He hates it when I try to feel the bump…I think he’s self-conscious, cause he doesn’t want us to know he’s not purr-fect!) I think it gives him character! I love all his little oddities!
What a superfreak!! Good one LeeAnne! Now I have that song in my head, it will be with me the rest of the day. Not such a bad thing!!!
I sang the Beach Boys all day yesterday, now I’m “Superfreaking”……..He’s superfreaky…owwwww!! Hee Hee Hee!!!
You beat me to it LeeAnne! The boys a superfreak, the boys a superfreak…its all right.. its all right by me…..hey hey hey hey..superfreaky! Owww! Nothing like Rick James (RIP).
I’m so bummed, no one caught the joke in my “Beach Boys” post yesterday!
Still, thanks for all the good wishes yesterday. It was the bright spot in an otherwise lousy day. Between being overworked at school and nothing but bad news in the mail yesterday (how does one person run up a $600 overage on the electrical bill?), I really needed a pick-me-up. Thanks, folks!
HM-Any plans to attend the rodeo? Couldn’t get to see George Strait (although 3 other teachers are), but I do have tix to SugarLand!
Ah George……..now there’s a cutie!!
I love George Strait my mama and I saw him years ago in Chicago on the bill was Merle Haggard, George Strait and Alabama. I think I have every tape or CD he has ever made.
I do too! Now there’s a REAL cowboy!! MMMM! MMMM! MMMMM!
Look at the bright side Ginny, at least you don’t have Al Gore’s electric bill

You folks in the northeast and in Quebec–want to talk to Algore about global warming? π
I heard this on the radio this morning, driving into work! So much for the champion of Mother Earth. I am not surprised, but disappointed none-the-less. I will continue to “b**ch” about the weather AND recycle AND do what I can to become more earth-friendly. Mr. Gore should set himself to a higher standard. I’m curious about how (and, if) he will respond.
He did respond, he said he bought carbon credits to offset the energy he uses.
oh…I remember him mentioning this “carbon” credit thing..still…
I am surprised by this. I guess if you are rich it doesn’t apply to you. Still, I liked that he brought more awareness to the fact that the earth is changing. We had three weeks of 100 degree weather here in California. Normally it would only be a week and it would be around the end of Aug or beginning Sept that that week would occur. Now it can happen any time. We had a hot week or two in June about two years ago where the temp came close to 100 in my area. We purposely do not have air conditioning due to the fog normally being around in the month of June to July.
You are so right. I saw the movie and think it is a MUST see for everyone. I also stand behind what Al is trying to do– increase awareness. We have so many “doomsday” predictions, but I really don’t believe that this was contrived for someone’s political agenda and fear-mongering. There are too many scientists world-wide who support global warming as fact. But what doesn’t come as a surprise is that we ALL, rich or poor, use too much and emit too much gunk (including Al and Tipper). Right now, many “alternative” housing and energy sources aren’t readily available or affordable or praticable. I think REAL “tax incentives” for conservation and lowering energy use will open things up and by REAL, I mean for the working class, mid to lower income bracket. I remember years ago when I installed a new Energy Efficient furnace and central A/C in my home and received a $700 rebate and then was sent a 1099 that this was considered “income” and taxable…geezz, thanks… OK, off soap box…I guess I’m still po’d about taxes on my rebate.
***OK, I’m not trying to start a fight with this, just trying to present a different viewpint***
But Catrancher, there are also plenty of other scientists out there who do not support the global warming theory and research that these scinetists have done has been ignored by the press because it doesn’t fit with their pre-conceived conclusions. They are also demonized in the press as working for ‘big oil’ and yet the global warming scientist that are given money by groups such as Earth First and Greenpeace are given a pass.
For example, while much press has been given to the ice melting in the artic, very little has been mentioned about the fact that the ice in the Antartic is getting thicker. If we were truly in a global warming state wouldn’t they both be loosing ice?
Also, scant mention has been made of Danish researchers Henrik Svensmark and Eigil Friis-Christensen who have completed a study of cosmic radiation and its effect on our environment and come to the concusion that the radiation has quite a bit larger effect on cloud formation (and thus global warming) that was originally thought. here’s a link to an article on it http://www.junkscience.com/Greenhouse/Cosmic_rays_and_climate.htm
Don’t get me wrong, we should clean up our environment. Brazil is running totally on Ethanol and Denmark is rolling out Hydrogen fueled cars which we still sit around and suck up gasoline. But the fact is that scientists don’t really know all the answers no matter how much they say they do.
Back in the 70’s we were told that a new ice age was coming. Then it was a hole in the ozone (which scientists now say is healing itself) Now it’s global warming. I think the truth is that the scientists are always finding some new sky to fall on us so that they can keep the research funding going.
Our government alone has spent over 30 billion a year on global warming research and what have we gotten out of it – not a whole lot except more taxes and less results.
When you read the news about any research, just follow the money, and there’s more money in supporting the global warming idea than there is in fighting it.
OK, off the soapbox for me too.
Instinct: I read this interesting article yesterday…
http://www.americanthinker.com/2007/02/manmade_global_warming_so_what.html
very good article. sorry about all my typos, I’m a horrible typist
You raise a good point, Instinct, about following the money…I’ll go to your link. I love a good debate (fight!) and I love research. I guess I hadn’t even entertained the idea about hefty research grants (remember oodles of money spent researching how a frisbee flies?) being a primary impetus. But then, there’s money at the end of every call to action, isn’t there? For someone, somewhere, just not to you and me and the guy down the street. But we must come down on one side of the fence AND while I am sure this debate has champions on both sides, I prefer to “err” on the side of caution and support some of the “green” agendas. There is no persuasive argument against our being wasteful, reckless consumers of our finite resources and pollutant-extraordinaires? Is there? I do believe that our climate is changing and I do believe that there is enough substantive research to indicate it is related to our “emissions”. I also believe that the change is slow and not wholly predictable and concede that there may be mitigating factors that haven’t been addressed. I feel a sense of urgency, but not panic, and don’t anticipate eating Soylent Green in my lifetime. SO, let me do some reading — getting the dialogue going is good, especially if it serves to increase awareness and depose false “prophets,” yes? It is so much more provocative than, say, Britney’s new do? *catrancher gets off soapbox, but sits on it with her laptop open*
Agreed, there is no reason to be wasteful and to drive vehicles that create too much polution when alternatives like Hydrogen are already out there.
What I am against is fear mongering and groups that, in the name of prtecting the environment, reap large profits and instead of helping people live better just block prgress.
There is a documentary out about some of these environmental grouos- it doesn’t star Al Gore though – called mine your own buisness that shows how these groups – in the name of protecting the environment – are helping to keep people in third world countries from being able to earn a decent living by stopping any kind of development.
I guess to my view, most of the environmental groups out there fall into the same catagory as PETA does for animals.
They may have started out with good intentions, but now its about money and power.
Sorry to be another thorn in your side CatRancher, but there really is not substantive research to indicate global warming is related to our emissions. The Earth is in a warming trend, but the link to man’s activity is weak. Here is another one of the many articles I’ve “stored” on the topic. This one being from MIT. (I still love you like my sister!)
http://www.technologyreview.com/Energy/13830/
“Soylent Green” — you mean someone besides me saw that movie???
Interesting story behind it. Even though they played mortal enemies in “The Ten Commandments,” Edward G. Robinson and Charlton Heston became close friends. When “Soylent Green” was being made, Heston insisted on Robinson playing his elderly roomate, Sol. Unknown to anyone else, Heston knew that Robinson was dying of cancer and needed money to pay his final expenses and provide for the family. Nine days after filming ended, Edward G. Robinson died on Jan. 26, 1973. It was also because of this knowledge that the tears Heston shed at “Sol”‘s death were real.
Soylent Green is a cult classic!
I used to disbeleive in global warming….
….then I expercienced a 70 degree day in January. In Pennsylvania.
I loved that movie! Although, I remember that EGR died before it was released, I didn’t know the story behind it, though! Thanks for the tidbit!
Yes, I’ve seen Solvent Green, Logan’s Run, Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimention and Rocky Horror
π
What, Instinct, you didn’t see Flash Gordon? Oh, I know, you just bought the soundtrack by Queen
“Flash, I LOVE YOU!! But we only have 14 hours left to save the earth!”
Hey Arcalian, I will bet that the abnormally warm weather you had was due more to the El Nino effect than global warming.
Here’s something embarassing, CatRancher. (But no one else can read this but you–haha!) Charlton Heston was one of my first real crushes! I was a 10-year-old in love with a man 40 years older. I guess I really do have a thing for older men, eh?
Is anyone else into IMDB.com? (a huge movie database– also has dossiers on practically every celebrity/musician, etc…) I LOVE that site. If you have not been there yet, be forewarned: it is addictive!
http://imdb.com/
OK, so I forgot to mention Flash. Oh, and Highlander (the original one, not the sequels).
I have even seen Beastmaster *hang head in shame*
I own a copy of Buckaroo Bonzai and was very disappointed that it never got a sequel. Ok anyone out there ever seen these cult classics: Pandemonium, Student Bodies, or Rockula? The last being a fabulous quasi musical full of 80’s stars like Toni Basil and Thomas Dolby. Oops there I go again showing my age!
Hey Dee, read the article, and while it exposes basic mathmatical errors in this particular program, it does not “disprove” that our carbon dioxide emissions are negatively impacting our environment. It just proves that “that” analysis has to be eliminated as an erroneous (and falsely alarming) diagnostic or predictive tool in the research. Even the author concedes that global warming is a “concern” — he is not an alarmist, however, and neither mindset or lack thereof, were solely based on the debunking of this global warming model. And so I repeat — I am “concerned” and I do believe that we are contributing with our reckless destruction of rain forests and other natural resources as well our selfish pollution of the air and sea. Those in power almost always use fear to motivate and alter our behavior and inevitably create dissension among the ranks — from “I’m telling Mom” to “We’ve got nuclear warheads pointed at you.” I wasn’t fearful from watching “An Inconvenient Truth,” I was motivated to do what I could to increase awareness and decrease my contribution to global warming… after all, the world is a warmer place just by having me in it, isn’t it? Well, someone told me that once!!! Geez! (a little humor there, just a little) So, yes, sistah!, you know I love you, too…(but unplug the toaster when you’re not using it)
Student Bodies! So bad, it’s good! The Breather–haha!
But, the best worst movie ever: Plan 9 From Outer Space…
Okay, Dee…I won’t tell a soul…Yul Bynner was the object of many of my preadolescent fantasies…I still love bald guys (my Dad was bald, too…is that some kind of Electra complex?). It was either from his movie the Sun King (not sure about name, he played an Egyptian pharoah or something) or The King and I…hopelessly romantic with singing and dancing, too!
CatRancher–I always unplug the toaster afterward–all of us with OCD unplug the toaster afterward–and check it 20 more times after that! haha!
And, yes, the world is a warmer place just by having you in it although it depends upon what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is. hahaha!
Drats–I wish I had more time to write (and read) on TDK, I can only grab a couple of minutes here and there…
CatRancher–just one more interesting article here–comments by Dr William Gray, the hurricane expert and forecaster…
“I’ll take on any scientist in this field to talk about this, I predict that in 5 to 8 years the globe will begin to cool”
http://www.denverpost.com/harsanyi/ci_3899807
I was in love with “Dr. Kildare! OH, how I adored him…!!
I also unplug everything and check the stove a few times before I can go to sleep, etc….
I always thought that Emma Peal from “The Avengers” was a hottie π
You and my husband…still!
As I understand it, Gore purchases “carbon credits”, which are eventually paid to those power producers who have spent money to reduce carbon emissions. In other words, although he uses a large amount of power, he pays an additional amount to encourage power producers to implement more environmentally friendly ways of producing power.
On another note, the reason I love TDK is because I can see nice pictures of kitty-babies and read nice things about them. If we start getting into politics, it will really mess this place up. There are many places that I can go to get my politics fix. I hope this does not become one of the political blogs….. I can vent nice here, and don’t want it to be somewhere where I vent spleen.
If he is going to talk the talk then he should walk the walk. I never did like him.
I thought he was doing something good in exposing the facts of global warming, but when the public reads this they will think he is only in it for the money and fame. Shame on him and everyone not doing all they can to cease wanton consumption.
I’m sorry, but he IS in it for the money and the fame. He’s now being nominated for a Nobel Prize…. for what? Being in a movie that uses half facts as whole truths and is more propaganda than science.
Gore has joined the Hollywood elite in the “Do as I say, not as I do” group.
That’s funny. I used that same quote to forward the link to the article to my non-TDK friends!
The only “inconvenient truth” is that someone as boring as Al Gore can become a movie star!
Well, come on Dee, Ben Aflak is in movies too π
You’re forgetting that we elect actors for our Commander-in-Chief, why not the other way around?? At least Ronnie had charm and was well-spoken…but, Arnie? nuff said!
CatRancher (or anyone else) –do you ever see the send-up of “Arnie” that Conan O’Brien regularly has on his show? (With just the lips of the comic poking through the Arnold photo) And Conan proceeds to interview him—hysterical!!
I’ve really enjoyed reading the comments on this subject and what everyone has to say and has been able to say with respect for one another. I was very disappointed to hear the news about Al Gore. As someone else said, I will continue to be thankful that he’s tried to raise awareness about global warming. And, in all due respect, Instinct, I don’t think he was using half-truths during most of the documentary. I have been in a college environment around some true scientific minds who are not “in it for the money” and they echoed his sentiments to me before he even brought them forward. I’ve never met one professor who stated that he or she believed global warming was a farce made up by enviromentalists to frame oil companies and make money. It’s very real and it is maybe not completely man-made, but drastically influenced by what we, as humans, do to our environment. As CatRancher said, it’s in our best interest to err on the safe side and treat is as if it’s a problem that needs to be addressed. We all need to work together to get away from petty self-interests to focus on the global human interest that we have at stake. But it’s wonderful that you are all exploring these sources and educating yourselves. It’s so hard, now, to trust any source, because, as people, we’re programmed to be selfish, I think. That’s sad.
As a scientist myself, may I weigh in on this? I don’t know one single scientist who studies climate change who doesn’t think that this is a real phenomenon and that it is at least in part human caused. This isn’t a political issue, but it has been made into one, as has a lot of science that says things that make the people in power don’t want to hear. The data is what it is. The theories (in the scientific sense of a set of testable hypotheses, NOT the lay sense of unproven conjecture) and climate models have accurately predicted the things which have been occurring around the world; the only thing that has been off is the time scale – it’s happening much faster than anyone predicted it would. If you had been told with the same amount of certainty with which the broad community of science speaks of global climate change that the numbers in your hand would win you the lottery, not only would you be buying your ticket, you’d be quitting your job, booking that around the world cruise you’ve always dreamed of and buying a new house to boot. The actual causes of climate change may be up for debate, but not the phenomenon itself. As for that website “junkscience”, perhaps you ought to know that its major source of funding is the Exxon Corporation and it is a front for a conservative political organization which is trying to further its own agenda. The person who runs it sites only those items which support his ideology, and condemns as “junk science” anything which does not support same. This is disingenuous at best and intellectually dishonest at worst. In any event, it’s not science.
I’m glad you did weigh in on that, Susan, you spoke much more eloquently than I could have. Very well said. Plus, I couldn’t get my stupid computer at work to open any of the links that were posted, so I was flying dumb!
IT’S PEOPLE!!! SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!!
arrrrggghh! Charleton Heston ate his friend!!!!
I live in an apartment and my elec bill was $246! Egads! How did that happen?
I would die of a heart attack if I ever got an electric bill that high….OUCH!
Get the digitalis now, LeeAnne–my total electric bill was over $1200! :’-(
Somebody dial 911….OMG!! I’d have to live in my car!!
Ouch!! Suddenly I feel better about mine
Okay..my electric bill for last month in my two bedroom two bath apartment was $46 even though we had record cold weather. Alameda Power and Telecom really keeps the rates down. I wonder how long this will last since the company is in trouble with their cable division and will probably make the electric customers help with the difference.
Hi Karin in SF,CA,
Glad to see you are on here today. Hope you are ok. I just heard that there was a landslide in San Francisco and that some apartment buildings were knocked down. I first thought of you, when I read it. Your electirc was only $46? Are you total electric?
My house is total electric, my bill runs around $100. We have O.G &E, their recovery charge is usually more than my bill. I do have a large house, though(about 2488sq.ft). I do lots of laundry. My bill still runs cheaper than everybody else’s around here.
Hi Renee, thank you for your concern. It was an San Francisco. I live in Alameda across the bay next to Oakland. We have gotten a lot of rain in the last couple of days and the ground is becoming very saturated.
check out this link for the article on the landslide:

Hi Nestchick. My utilitiy regularly runs about 225.00-300.00 (1200 SF house). Also, one of the “famous Fords” (for those of y’all who have heard about our political problems in Memphis) has not paid the utility bill for his business since 2004. He is one of our city councilmen and owes Memphis Light Gas and Water over 16000.00. The man who our Mayor put in as head of MLGW had Ford’s debt buried in a program that is supposed to be helping poor and elderly people who can’t pay their utility bill. This program is for individuals who agree to taking a money management class and have never filed bankruptcy. Ford filed bankruptcy in 1997, 1998 and 1999 not to mention the program was NOT for businesses. Mayor “King Willie Herenton” fired the man who was doing a great job heading up MLGW and put a crook in his place. In 15 years, between the King Willie and the Fords among others, our city has gone straight downhill.
Ginny, are you near Houston, since you’re talking about the livestock show and rodeo? I’m in Galveston.
Yep, I’m west of Katy (way out in the sticks, but at least it’s quiet here–except my 3rd period “zoo,” who are working on a group activity as I type; and my 6th period Demon Spawn from Hell who, ironically, include my son. He’s one of the few quiet ones in that class.)
Oh yes, I remember having my mom as a teacher.
I got in trouble for beating the tar out of a fellow student who called her a name that I will not repeat here.
Mom was not happy about that, but Dad got a smile out of it
If you lived in Maryland, my son would probably be in your Demon Spawn from Hell class. He-he.
I went to the cook off on Friday (it’s in the catster diary – Huddy wrote about it) and then in a couple of weeks my sister and I will go and check out the animals and the food. We never go to any of the performances because the acoustics are SO bad. The last rodeo performance I went to was Selena way back in 1995.
Hey Huddy’s Mama, that must have been an experience what with it being Selena’s last live performance before she was tragically shot by her fan club manager. So sad. So much lost.
I remember my cousin and I grinching because she didn’t do many songs in Spanish, she did mostly Motown stuff. But after she was killed, we were SO glad we were there.
My first ex-wife and I went to see Ann Murray in ’79. The acoustics (or the lack thereof) has caused me to never attend a rodeo live performance since.
Too bad and so sad, as they book some of the finest performers in existance.
Ivory Bill how the heck are you? “inquiring minds want to know.
Hi, Susan in Kennesaw — I am overworked, underpaid, tired, and enamored of a grey cat named Joshua. Nothing has changed!
I am sorry about the over worked and under paid but happy that you are still around. We worry when one of comes up missing for awhile since we have no other way of contacting most of us.
i watched the movie they made about her with J-Lo sunday on tv. i barly remember her trying to make her english crossover. she had such a beautiful voice. im a singer myself and to take that kind of gift out of this world is a loss to all of us.
It was a big deal here – the cross over – because she had such a huge following here in Texas. I’m not a J-Lo fan, but she really did a great job playing Selena. She had the mannerisms down and everything, she even sort of sounded like her when she spoke.
The girl had some pipes on her, no doubt about that. What a waste.
I saw the joke! I’ve been singin’ it ever since… guess i shoulda told you. “come on Huddy’s mama…” Good one!
Sorry for your not so good Birthday, Ginny. Hope you get the electric bill squared away. Love Sugarland, enjoy the show. Glad we could cheer you up!
I’ll go and eat the food and ride the rides but that’s about it. I have tickets to Rascal Flatts, but I have no idea who they are so I gave them to another lady at work. (We get free tickets here every year).
Ginny,
Wow, what a birthday gift…a $600 electric bill?? My, my there must be a BIG mistake?
Sorry……. HUGS
Sorry Ginny I guess I was too busy with reading while at work that I have to speed read sometimes and do not get the whole meaning.
Have a nice big chocolate chip cookie. I baked them fresh last night and brought them to work. Couldn’t resist them this morning. They were calling to me. LOL!
Last night, my daughter made me peanut butter cookies with the Hershey kiss in the middle. The day wasn’t a total wash!
π
Yummy, peanut butter cookies. That was very nice of your daughter. Her kharma points just went up. π
She’s my hero. She almost died in a car accident last summer (broke every bone in her face), but 7 weeks later she was working out with the cross-country team, even made Varsity near the end of the season (hard enough for a HEALTHY freshman), and has managed to keep up with her Pre-AP classes.
Hers is quite a story, but is much too long for one sitting. I’ll just have to feed you tidbits as relevance allows.
Geeeez….now I want some p-nut butter cookies……..I’m still singing Superfreak by the way!!
Wow that is amazing Ginny! Thank God she is okay and healed quickly. She must be an amazing kid. You are certainly blessed. π
Ginny, Wow, your daughter sounds like a sweetie pie, and a miracle! Yes, an amazing story! You are blessed…..
I like to listen to books on tape. I just finished one of Lillian Jackson Brauns books, the cat who listened to braums. Great series of books if any one is interested. THe reader of the books on tape for this series is awesome. π
Does any one have other suggestions for good books?
First Codie is WAY cute…
Second… if you like lighthearted mysteries, try Janet Evanovich or Carl Hiaasen. Also the Sneaky Pie mysteries by Rita Mae Brown. If you like historical fiction, with some romance thrown in.. Try Diana Gabaldon. For pure historical fiction with fabulous characterization and an amazing use of the English language, try Patrick O’Brian….. If you want more.. email me at jeepbabe1962 at yahoo dot com
I Love Diana GAbaldon, I am rereading them agian.. π
I have all the books, it is the only series I have read for a second time.
I’ll look into the others. Thanks!
If you like Diana Gabaldon, check out Labrynth by Kate Mosse (No not the skinny model) this book is like Diana Gabaldon was combined with Dan Brown
I read about 7 Joe Grey mysteries one weekend (Joe Grey is a talking cat) and by the end of the weekend, I was convinced my cats could talk, just choosing not to; the author is named Rousseau, I think, but they are really amusing.
Bless your heart I wanted to check to see if there were any new books with Joe Grey but could not remember the author’s name.
I read a book by the same author called the Catswold Portal. It was wonderful… finished it in no time because I couldn’t put it down! π
Diana Mott Davidson’s books are really fun to read. Her main character is a caterer named Goldy and she always includes the recipes for the dishes she talks about. I also love the Aunt Dmity books by Nancy Atherton. She is british and her novels fall into that cozy category. The Miss Julia books by Ann B Ross are lots of fun too!
I LOVE Goldy! What I really liked, in addition to the story itself, was that there were recipes! I actually made a couple, including the huge cinnamon roll recipe from the first book. I know there are many “culinary mysteries” about nowadays, but my first exposure was D.M. Davidson. She’s great-
Her latest book has a couple of really delicious looking recipes in it, including blue-cheese cake. When I get in the mood to try something fun, I pick up her books and flip through.
I love reading Iris Johansen’s books. I finish them in about two days – can’t put them down.
I’m reading one now by Karin Slaughter, found this book at a yard sale. I’m having a hard time putting it down, it’s quite good. I enjoy Iris J’s books too.
Janet Evanovich writes a series of mystery books. The first book is called “one for the Money” and you can guess the rest of them. There twelve books so far. I just finished the eleventh book and will go see if there is a paperback version of the twelfth book. Enjoy.
I’m slowly collecting Janet E’s series at different yard sales! Haven’t started reading any yet. Do you have to read the books in series order?? I wasn’t sure if each book is a continuation of the other….
My favorite author is Nora Roberts/JD Robb. I also love Margaret Coel and Tony Hillerman for mysteries with Native American people. Hers are with the Arappahoe and his is mainly with Navaho and Zuni. I had on my collection of turquiose jewelry and my elk hide cane with beading on at church one Sunday a lady asked me if I was from the Southwest I told her only in my imagination.
That is really cool Susan!
I love Indian things. My dad had a 14′ X 14′ tee pee made for me out of yellow canvas and it was grand!! I also did Indian beadwork for many years and taught the kids I babysat durings summers how to do it. I had a campfire in the tee pee and had Indian clothes, etc. It was awesome, I had a big imagination too. What a wonderful childhood!!
Since I cannot travel health but mainly lack of funds but I travel in my mind everyday. No matter where the book is set I get lost in it and learn so much of culture, fashion and mores just from reading the story.
Not really LeeAnne as she always explains in the beginning of the book what has been happening to the main character (Stephanie Plum). I enjoy reading these books as Stephanie is always getting herself into a pickle of a problem and the grandmother (Granma Mazur) is a hoot! So is Lula with her “Damm Skippy”. I start one of those books and cannot put it down.
Thanks Karin! I’ll be reading one of hers next then. I didn’t want to get lost in the series!!
See if you can find the Gayle Greeno series “Ghatti’s Tale” in your library if you like fantasy. The first one is called “Finders Seekers” , then there’s “Mindseeker’s Call” and “The Exile’s Return”. The premise is that humans and a large species of cat called a ghatt have a life long telepathic bond. The ghatt chooses who to bond with, and the pair become what are called “seekers”, ensuring justice because the ghatt can distinguish false from true. They are probably out of print now (I bought them oh, maybe 15 years ago?), so the library is probably your best bet. The first is the best of the bunch, but I liked them all.
Susan, there are two more Ghatti books that take place after these three, dealing with the twin kids of the hero/heroine (forgot their names). I liked them best, especially the ghatti they bonded with (sisters) who sound cuter than cute. Hope you can find them.
I had seen them and wondered if they were any good. Thanks for the tip . . . I’ll seek them out! π
Codie is such a coo-dee-pie! Love his color….gotta get me one of those ginger kitties one-o-these days!
Right now, I’m in the middle of 3 books: “Animal Farm” by George Orwell (I had always resisted reading Orwell, but I found the book open in my house and was instantly captivated by his writing), “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas (I waxed poetic about that book last week), and “The Gettysburg Gospel” by Gabor Boritt (a remarkable history about Lincoln’s famous speech). My all-time favorite: “Watership Down” by Richard Adams. A must-read!
Sorry, this was supposed to be a reply to MerD’s post above
Well when you finish “Animal Farm’ the next logical step is “1984”.
Actually, my favorite Orwell book is “Homage to Catalonia”, about the Spanish Civil War. It is non-fiction, but still written so typically well. “1984” is both grim and dated, but still worth reading as a historical piece.
Also add to the must read list “Once an Eagle”.
As for light mystery reading, I always liked the Spencer books by Robert Parker.
I’m a big Jonathan Kellerman and Patricia Cornwell fan! If you enjoy forensic type murder mysteries!
Ooooh, for that kind of mysteries, I like Tess Gerritsen. I read a bunch of Robin Cooks’ as well, but stopped as I can no longer remember which ones I’ve read.
I love the Edgar Allen Poe mystery books. The book called “The lady in white” is one of my favorites.
I’m a huge fan of Poe!!
Those are my kind of books, Ginny! It’s been a while since I’ve read “Animal Farm…” Wow! Probably about 8 years or so. I was a Lit major in college, so I’m always out for a good read (if I have time!!) Right now I’m trying out “Eragon” which came highly recommended and then I’m on to “Mrs. Dalloway” by Virginia Woolf.
Amy Lou, have you read “The Hours”? I was never a big Virginia Woolf fan, I found her so whiny. But I actually enjoyed “The Hours” quite a lot. I was a British Studies major in college, an inter-disciplinary major involving British history, literature and art. My favorite book for a while was “Pre-Raphealites in Love”, a book which combined all three of these fields.
I have a recommendation: anything and everything by Jasper Fforde. He is a Welsh/English writer, and he has written two series, the first one is the Nursery Crimes books, which was actually published second, and the second series is the Thursday Next books, with our heroine, who is a literary detective. If you haven’t read these books already, drop everything that you are doing and run out to the nearest bookstore and purchase all of them! I think you will love them, especially the Thursday Next novels. The first one is called “The Eyre Affair”.
Enjoy!
That was awesome as was the sequel! Thank goodness for Sci Fi Book Club!
All of them were GREAT!!! My officemate and I went to a booksigning with Jasper Fforde, and we fawned all over him as if we were tweenies. He is so gracious, and self-deprecating in that humorous oh-so-British way. We totally fell in love. We are anxiously awaiting new of the Fforde Festival, to be held in Reading, we hope.
I’m delighted to find another SciFi person!! I am newly come to the genre, having been way too snooty in the past (much to my own detriment), and I am just eating it up! I am a total William Gibson groupie (while reading his latest, “Pattern Recognition”, I kept calling my boyfriend and saying “this guy is a f***ing genius”!!). The last sci fi thing I read is a trilogy taking place in the future, but in a revised future: the Ottoman Empire did not dissolve after WWI, and remains a significant world power. The first book is called “Effendi”, and I think the last book is called “Pasha”. I can’t remember the author’s name right now, but this trilogy is really fun, and I recommend it highly.
Gosh, now all I want to do is go home, curl up with my cats and read, read, read!!
Codie is such a love so soft and sweet. So maybe if he is a bit kinky they need love too.
Nature kitty with a Twist FUZZ!!!!
it looks so nice out there….i just want to lay down and watch the clouds with him.
What a sweetie! i love the orangies!
My Tiger has a bob tail with about 60 degree crook in it. I’ve always wondered what happened to his tail (I adopted him as an adult).
What a beautiful color!
I love his ears!
A handsome little boy, for sure. Looks exactly like my 10 month old Charlie. If Codie is half as sweet and lovable, you have a winner. Their sunny nature matches their sunny coloring.
Anyone seen Ivory Bill? I miss his kitty poems? Hey Bumblebee and Brittany, you two out there?? Maybe I just got here quicker than usual. Dee hasn’t checked in yet either. Gotta get back to work, will check back in later. Have a great day TDKers!
Ivory Bill, come make your post!
Our poetry quotient is turning to toast!
Oh where is the bard who makes us laugh ’til we weep?
Somewhere is cyberspace, fast asleep!
Maybe you can become the new Ivory Bill, Ginny! I liked your poem.
Very good Ginny! You are next in line if Bill should disappear, which I hope he won’t! You two make quite a competitive team.
Yes, Ginny! You are really talented!!!
Thanks for sharing!
Hey Lynn, my PA. buddy,
I am out here. I’m watching Martha Stewart as I read these comments.
I am going to try to work part time next week with my back. I hope and pray I can stand it. I am so broke, and have no choice but to go back, even if my back isn’t ready yet. It’s going on 4 weeks I have been out of work.
I will miss my friends on here during the day though. I am spoiled being home all day to chat. I’ll just read the comments when I get home, or on my days off.
You all are awesome!! HUGS
Bumblebee, I wish you all the best going back to work. Hope your back gets better soon!
Awwww….. Thanks Great Dane!
π
Good luck, Bumblebee. So sorry you’ve been in pain, lately. The money problems just make things so much worse. My hubby was in between jobs for a whle and finally found a great, permanent position. The problem is, he didn’t get paid for a month once he started working. It was hard for us just living on my pay, alone for all that time. He finally gets his first check tomorrow! Of course, now we have this major catch-up time with bills and such! It never ends! Hope things start looking up for you, too, and your body and your bank account heal! Take care!
Hey Bumblebee, are there any jobs in your area that would allow you to work from home? Maybe where a company needs help with paperwork or phone coverage of some kind? I very sorry that you are going through this tough time. Here is a gentle but big hug for you.
I hope you are not rushing back to work only to reinjure yourself. But I understand the financial problems you must be having. I know you will miss us during the day, as we all will you. I can’t always chat here at work depending on the amount of work I have to get out and I miss everyone too, when I can’t post. Take good care Bumblebee and hugs to you too, my friend.
Bumblebee I’m really sorry you have to return to work before the healing is complete. I know the stress of running out of money is really awful, and am glad that you can at least do part-time to test the waters. I don’t know what kind of work you do, but hopefully not something that requires bending or standing for long periods.
Unfortunately,
I am a cashier so will be standing for about 5 hours, with a 15 min break and 30 min lunch.
I am gonna try to stick it out. I asked for every other day to start so I can rest a day in between.
I have no insurance right now, and no money for a Dr. or chiropractor either, so… not much I can do.
Thank you for everyone’s sweet and caring comments. You are all SO special and loving!
Thanks…. π
Bumblebee, if you have to stand in one spot so long let me make a suggestion. Take something about 5-6 inches high that you can rest a foot on. Switch feet every now and then. A nice thick book would do if you don’t have anything else. Having one foot slightly elevated really helps to keep the stress off your back. You should also wear a back brace or tight girdle for at least part of the day, you could take it off at lunch break.
I also have 2 exercises that really work to strengthen the important back muscles. They are easy and really work if you do them daily. I don’t want to bore everyone here because they will take a long explanation but if you want them e-mail me at elene1 at comcast dot net.
Hi Bumblebee,
I will miss you, but I guess I can wait until you get home to read your posts. I usually get back on in the evening, to read the comments again. Take care.
We’ll miss you during the day, Bumblebee! Please take care of yourself–we worry about you!
Awwww. gee… thanks…
You guys are too much!! π
That is so sweet Renee….. Thanks! π
Oooh…such a pretty little butterscotch tiger, is Mr. Codie. And with a quirky tail, to boot…the perfect kitty!
Codie is a beautiful orangey. Come on, Codie. I have a nice backpack waiting for you!!
Hey HM! Codie is in my backpack today!! I’ll release him to you in an hour or so. You can have tomorrow’s kitty, since I may not get here soon enough! We share!
*OK, realizes Huddy’s Mama is in need of some Lovin! Kisses Codie, rubs his belly and gently hands him over to a waiting Huddy’s Mama*
Thanks for sharing – Sharing is caring!! lol
*hugs Codie*
Hi Codie *puts in him the backpack*
I have a happy story to share!
My daughter’s dear friend wanted a cat. She loves our Oliver as he reminds her of her long ago kitty. She went to a local Animal Rescue the other day and adopted a lovely little calico, two years old. Her name is Spaz and that was special as this lady always uses that word, and knew this was to be her cat. She is fixed, and not declawed. So, she is one happy lady, and one happy little calico girl! I was SO happy to hear this story. This lady also has a little dog and a ferret, both spoiled rotton. This story just made my day!! π
thats great. i love to hear of people adopting older cats as most want kittens and the poor older cats rarly get a look in. my oldest cat is pebbles. she was a rescue cat at 1 year old and found her forever home with me π
Hi Fiona!
That is wonderful that you rescued little Pebbles. Awwww. what a lucky kitty!
Blessings……
Hi Bumblebee
was just reading about your back. its awful that you have to go back to work even if ur not better.
in ireland if u have to be out sick u can claim a certain amount from the state if ur job wont pay. its not what ur wages wud be but it is better than nothing. i had to do this last year after i was in a car accident. luckily i was ok after 1 month.
also here if ur docter certs u sick it is illegal to go back to work til u get all clear as insurance wont cover u on premises if ur ill.
I wish we had something like you have in Ireland, Fiona. Here the USA is really lacking in health care and of course it is always a big item that the President candidates bandy about in their big speeches. Hopefully soon they will be able to put something in play so that everyone will have some sort of health care. I work as a temporary and therefore do not have health insurance as I cannot afford it on my temp pay. If either my husband or myself has a major health issue, we are basically up a creek without a paddle. At times I consider moving to Canada what with their national healthcare and all. I have family in Canada and my father was Canadian until age 19. Not sure if I can claim dual citizenship but could be worth a try. I mentioned this to my husband and at first he didn’t like the idea as he said it gets too cold in Canada but now he seems to be re-thinking the idea. I have family in LaSalle, Ontario area.
Time for you belly rub, Codie! Sending lots of kisses your way.
Ivory Bill, please wax poetic..
the verse will flow, if only you let it..
we miss your humor,
we miss your wit,
can you give as a hollar, let us know that you’re fit?
Hey, Bill, it’s amazing what you have started here! Another poet amongst us. Very nice CatRancher!
I think he and my little girl would get along so well. She looks as full of mischief as Codie does and i’m sure they’d keep me up all night with the running all over my place.
This baby is a doll, what a beautiful color!
Codie looks like by Booger when he was a kit. I love orangies! What a sweet boy!
GOLDEN TABBEY!!!!
*smooches kitty*
Pozer fuzz. Looks like he is doing his look at me aren’t I wonderful…so wonderful that you will put my picture in a calendar. He does have that deer caught in the headline look though. So cute and soft looking. Have to pick him up, cuddle, give him some kisses and put him back down for someone to put him in their backpack.
So someone mentioned a TDK cruise. I am so there! I need a vacation bad. Running around again at work because of the other assistant (who I back up) didn’t clarify who is meeting where at 8:30am this morning and since she doesn’t come in till almost 9am, it fell on me. Opening bag and eating chocolate chip cookie..can’t wait till lunch to eat.
TDK Cruise, chocolate chip cookies, pizza, irish coffee…..make it stooooooop!!
I’m ready…let’s ALL go!!!!!!!!
I know…. It all sounds too delicious.
A cruise wud be great. sorry about ur crappy day. ur in the right place though tdk always cheers me up π
You are right about TDK, Fiona. All the jokes, stories, and comments help me make it through the day at time, today being one of them.
Thank you to all you TDK’ers for helping make my day a better day. Headbonks and purrs as the kitties say.
YAEH!
Oooh wee; ooh wee, baby!
Oooh wee; ooh wee, baby!
Oooh wee; ooh wee, baby!
Won’t you let me take you on a sea cruise!
Oh brother, Ginny. First it was Superfreak and now Sea Cruise! The bad part of this is I remember the song!!
Hey you always claim you heard them on the “oldies station” thats my story and I am sticking to it!
Never thought of that, Susan! That works for me!!
yup…oldies but goodies
Just like us lol
Somedays I am oldy but goody and some days it is moldy oldy!
When do we leave???
SOON I HOPE!!
Ginny in Cat Spring–I teach in the Fort Worth area and my electric bill was also outrageous (although nothing like yours!). What grade/subject do you teach?
Language arts and ESL for the middle grades. I’m a glutton for punishment–annual writing tests and the ESL assessments cropping up simultaneously. I’ve been like a chicken with it’s head cut off since December, and no relief in sight until the end of March!
Talk about coincidences! I teach middle school sp. ed. math and ELA. This is definitely the time of year to be thankin’ ole’ G.W. for all the mandates. . . .the ESL writings are bad enough without adding the actual TAKS writing test and everything else (benchmark tests, etc. ). I sure do miss the ‘old days’ of being exceptionally creative and not having to worry so much about all the silly tests.
I don’t know how you guys do it. I taught middle-school English/language arts back in the early/mid-90’s, and even then I thought the assessments took up a ridiculous amount of time. My last year of teaching was spent in Charlotte, NC, which had an even more-extensive testing schedule than Illinois; that was when I decided I couldn’t take it anymore, and got out of teaching. The minute I heard about No Child Left Behind, I felt so bad for the colleagues I’d left behind–because I KNEW what would come of it–but even I couldn’t have imagined how bad it really turned out to be for the teachers. Add to that the TOTAL lack of discipline in even the “good” homes, and the rules upon rules that prevent teachers from even saying “Stop that”– You should pat yourselves on the back just for making it through every day.
Codie is adorable.. I want to rub his tummy! His eyes are definitely full of mischief. π
Today is Spay Day!
Spay Day USA 2007
By: PetPlace Staff
About every eight seconds, a cat or dog is euthanized in a U.S. animal shelter, according to The Humane Society of the United States. While some may be euthanized due to illness or injury, most are victims of human failure to provide them with the care they deserve. Despite the best efforts of shelters everywhere, there are still too many pets and not enough loving, responsible homes. The cost of pet overpopulation is staggering with more than $1 billion per year to provide community animal control services and care for homeless animals.
Those sobering statistics are the impetus behind Spay Day USA, an annual event when hundreds of community organizations coast to coast participate in activities that make it easier for people to get their pets spayed or neutered. February 27 is designated as the official Spay Day USA 2007, with more than 400 events happening throughout the month. More than 70,000 animals are expected to be spayed or neutered in February.
Animal experts agree that spaying and neutering is the best long-term solution to the problem of pet overpopulation.
“Cats and dogs who are spayed or neutered lead healthier lives, make better pets, and are not contributing to pet overpopulation,” said John Snyder, HSUS vice president of Companion Animals. “It is shameful that millions of healthy cats and dogs are euthanized every year and The Humane Society of the United States is determined to keep working at this tragedy until it is solved.”
The HSUS is coordinating Spay Day USA, working with local shelters, humane organizations, veterinary clinics, and individual volunteers to offer special spay-neuter events, deploy mobile spay-neuter clinics, raise money to subsidize spay-neuter surgeries, and increase awareness about the importance and benefits of spaying and neutering.
Local Spay Day USA Events
The HSUS is partnering with PETS 911, a nationwide network of local pet information, to create a clearinghouse of Spay Day USA activities. Through PETS 911’s toll free phone number 888-PETS-911, callers can hear recorded messages (English or Spanish) about local events. The web site http://www.spaydayusa.org will also list events by state.
Benefits of Spaying and Neutering
In addition to reducing the number of homeless pets entering animal shelters, spaying and neutering offers significant benefits to pets and their families:
Sterilized animals are less likely to run away.
Male cats are less likely to spray, and male dogs may be less likely to bite or get in fights with other dogs. Spaying female dogs and cats gets rid of heat cycles.
Spaying and neutering eliminates many common forms of cancer. This can reduce the costs of veterinary care.
Sterilized animals make better companions. They are less likely to develop behavior problems and generally have a better temperament.
Facts about Dog and Cat Overpopulation
Animal welfare groups have worked for decades to reduce the number of homeless animals. The overall number of animals euthanized every year in animal shelters is down from a peak of an estimated 13.5 million (22% of the owned pet population) in the early 1970s, to an estimated 3-4 million (less than 3% of the owned pet population) today.
Around half of all animals entering shelters are euthanized. If more people spayed or neutered their pets, this sad statistic could be reduced.
A survey of 186 animal shelters showed an average cost of $176 to house and care for every homeless animal.
Spaying and neutering are safe, simple surgeries that stop animals from reproducing.
Healthy kittens and puppies weighing as little as two pounds can be spayed or neutered.
Spay Day USA
The Doris Day Animal League founded Spay Day USA in 1995 to reduce pet overpopulation. DDAL merged with The HSUS in 2006 to streamline and coordinate operations between the two animal welfare organizations.
Since its inception in 1995, more than one million animals have been spayed or neutered because of Spay Day USA, including more than 140,000 last year.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s largest animal protection organization representing nearly 10 million members and constituents. This little boy looks just like my Rufus, full of life and incredibly rambunctious!! Rufus came into my home and made it his own, and I’m sure Cody did the same. He is adorable!
What a doll Codie is. That little face is just too much.
**That Morning Caffeine Fix? Consider It Health Care**
Here’s another plug for green tea — and coffee, too.
A large Japanese study has found that sipping away on six cups of green tea each day may shrink type 2 diabetes risk, especially among women and overweight men. Why? Researchers aren’t sure yet, but caffeine may play a role. Even though green tea’s not loaded with the stuff, other studies have found that the caffeine in coffee seems to guard against diabetes.
Green tea has only about 30 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per 8-ounce cup, versus coffee’s 100 mg. So if caffeine was behind the diabetes protection seen in the study, that explains why it took so much green tea to have an effect. However, other compounds in green tea could deserve the credit. Or heavy green tea drinkers could have other lifestyle habits that defend against diabetes.
Even if the caffeine is responsible, obviously it can’t guarantee your diabetes protection. But it may help, because caffeine positively affects the way your body processes sugar. And flaws in sugar processing (glucose metabolism) are the core problem with diabetes. The risky result is high blood sugar levels, which can lead to frightening health problems, from blindness to heart disease. Although there are treatments, prevention is obviously the real deal. It includes working out regularly, controlling your weight, eating a healthful diet — and now, maybe, dropping by a coffee house. Whether you order a medium latte or a large green tea, well, that’s your call.
**Driver Used Laptop Before Crash, Police Say**
Computer Plugged In, Running
POSTED: 9:07 am EST February 27, 2007
YUBA CITY, Calif. — Authorities investigating a fatal crash in California said they found a dead man’s laptop computer in the wreckage. It was still running.
They believe the man was using the computer while driving. It was plugged into his car’s cigarette lighter.
The man’s car crossed into oncoming traffic near Yuba City on Monday and collided with a Hummer. The couple inside the Hummer escaped with just bumps and bruises.
The road about 30 miles north of Sacramento was closed for about two hours.
Saw that, just had to shake my head
Good grief, between cell phones and now laptops…who’s driving the car???????? I say ban them all while driving, I’m sure there would be less accidents….positive even….
What a horrible tragedy! I was behind someone in traffic this morning – he was reading a newspaper while driving. Yesterday I saw a woman putting on mascara while driving down the road. Don’t people have any sense?
I truly believe that “sense” let alone “good sense” in non-existant……why on earth would you read the paper while driving?? When I follow people like that, I wish I had a big air horn on my truck to scare the poopy out of them!!
I had a bus driver who would regularly read the Sun Times while driving the bus. He would slam on the brakes at the bus stops riding with him to work was my daily stress test.
http://www.darwinawards.com
’nuff said.
Oh yea, good ol’ Darwin Awards.
I keep saying that before people are allowed to have kids they should be given an IQ test and a Common Sense test – fail either and it’s a vasectomy for you, bub.
At least he didn’t hurt or kill someone. If all people on cell phones, eating, reading, using a laptop, etc., etc., would just have 1 vehicle accidents (like running into a phone pole) then it wouldn’t matter, but they usually adversely affect others. I know how I hate to see all the stupidity on the roads, especially since being rear-ended by a cell phone user twice in 4 years. Changed my life forever, but neither of them had to pay the same price because neither of them was injured. They are both still chatting away, while driving at 70 miles per hour.
Unbelievable! It is amazing what people will try to do while driving. I have seen people putting on their make-up, reading the newspaper, eating and drinking (coffee or soda I hope). In this day and age of multi-tasking, some people cannot just do one thing. Amazing! :-O
Very interesting article—“Deconstructing a Twinkie”
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17303919/site/newsweek/?GT1=9033
EEeeeeewwwww….. glad I don’t eat those any more…!!
Now that is funny π
yuk!!!
Well, yea. Yuck, but funny
Tastycake Butterscotch Krimpets are much better anyway.
Those Butterscoth Krimpets are surprisingly good!
Now I wondered about Tastycakes. In Janet Evanovich’s books she mentiones them. After reading one of those books, I wanted to try one.
Are they regional? I’m not certain. The Butterscotch Krimpets probably SMELL better than anything. The texture pales to anything homemade…
Tastycakes are a regional product. They are made in Philadelphia. They are sold only in the northeast part of the US. And yes they are good! If you drop me a line a rucruc2004 at yahoo dot com, I could send you a box to try.
Oh how gross. Twinkies used to be one of my favorite snacks, but no more. I think I’ll just eat fruit from now on.
Didn’t they taste so much better when we were kids? Here’s what I make when someone in my household is snack cake jonesing (recipe from King Arthur Flour):
Kyle’s Whoopie Pies
OK, we understand if you’re not from particular pockets of America (northern New England, east-central Pennsylvania…), you probably don’t know what a Whoopie Pie is. Well, read on…
Chocolate Cakes
1/2 cup (3 1/4 ounces) shortening
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 large egg
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons (1 1/8 ounces) natural cocoa OR 3 tablespoons each black cocoa and natural cocoa
2 cups (8 1/2 ounces) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
Filling
1 cup (6 1/4 ounces) shortening
1 cup confectioners’ sugar or glazing sugar
1 1/3 cups (5 7/8 ounces) Marshmallow Fluff or marshmallow creme
a heaping 1/4 teaspoon extra-fine salt OR the salt of your choice dissolved in 1 tablespoon water
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
Cakes: Preheat the oven to 350ΓΒ°F. Lightly grease (or line with parchment) two baking sheets.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the shortening, sugar and egg. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cocoa(s), flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir the vanilla into the milk.
Add the dry ingredients to the shortening mixture alternately with the milk/vanilla mixture, beating till smooth. Drop the dough by the 1/4-cupful, onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each cake.
Bake the cakes for about 15 minutes, or until they’re firm to the touch. Remove them from the oven and cool completely on a rack.
Filling: Beat together the shortening, sugar and marshmallow, then stir in the salt and vanilla. Spread half of the cakes with the filling; top with the remaining cakes. Yield: about 9 large whoopie pies.
I always heard these were an Amish favorite. They are fantasitc! I’ve never made them, though…
Ben & Jerry’s had a “limited run” of an ice cream called “Makin’ Whoopie Pie” ice cream. It was around for about a month, I got 2 pints of it, and never found it again.
T
Very interesting article Dee. I had heard the shelf life of a twinkie was something like a year but maybe it has been known to be longer? Do not want to find out.
Codie is definitely a cutie ! Wish I could twist the way cats do…. they continually amaze me…
**Co-Worker’s ‘Idiot’ Comment Helps Man Claim Winnings**
POSTED: 10:37 am PST February 27, 2007
UPDATED: 10:42 am PST February 27, 2007
DES MOINES, Iowa — Ed O’Neill’s bank account just got a lot bigger, thanks to a co-worker who told him some “idiot” hasn’t claimed an $800,000 Powerball lottery prize.
O’Neill, 58, who works for the Clinton Chamber of Commerce, bought the ticket for a Jan. 6 Powerball drawing. He told Iowa Lottery staffers he didn’t think to check the results until a couple days afterward, when a chamber receptionist pointed out an article in the local newspaper.
“She said, ‘Read this article about the idiot that hasn’t claimed his ticket.’ So I read it and noticed where the ticket was bought,” O’Neill said. “I thought, ‘Gee, I better look at my ticket.’ That’s when I said, ‘I think I won.”‘
Then he called his wife, Diane, 58, who thought he was pulling a prank.
O’Neill said his wife told him to “quit horsing around. I’m watching Oprah.”
O’Neill countered: “No really, Diane. I won.”
Hysteria soon ensued as Diane realized he wasn’t joking.
On Monday, the couple cashed in the ticket at the lottery headquarters in Des Moines, but not before meeting with an accountant and planning how to handle the winnings.
“There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that kind of money,” O’Neill said.
O’Neill won by matching five white balls in the Powerball game. He also had purchased the Power Play option, multiplying a $200,000 prize by four.
After taxes, the couple will get about $560,000 — much of which will go to pay off their mortgage, pay off their children’s mortgages and save for retirement.
There will be a little left for fun, too. O’Neill said he and his wife are planning a trip to Ireland.
They also plan to donate money to Prince of Peace Catholic Parish in Clinton to help pay for construction of another church.
Lucky man! Hope he gave his co-worker a gift for the tip!!
I agree Lynn. Definitely a finder’s fee of $1,000 would be nice. Afterall he just helped the guy get richer by $560,000! Yowza! I buy a Calif lottery ticket and a mega Lottery ticket when it is in the 30 million and over. Most of the fun is just dreaming about what I would do if I had enough money for my husband and I to “retire” on.
I play Powerball every week….I’ll remember to do the power play as well now!

**L.I. Man Once Rescued From Drowning Returns The Favor**
POSTED: 5:42 am EST February 26, 2007
UPDATED: 6:15 pm EST February 26, 2007
CENTERPORT BEACH, N.Y. — They all reacted on instinct: Neil Maycock and his two golden retrievers plunged into a frozen harbor to rescue a man who had fallen through the ice.
For Maycock, it was the memory of his own near drowning as a 3-year-old boy in England that caused him to jump in — without even thinking — to help save a stranger in Centerport Harbor on Sunday.
Maycock was strolling on the beach with his two sons and dogs when they heard the screams of a woman who had seen Michael Johnson fall through the ice.
“If I’d thought about it a little bit more, I wouldn’t have done anything,” Maycock, 40, told Newsday in Monday editions. “It was just instinct.”
Johnson, 23, of Centerport, was flailing and at one point slipped beneath the surface. Maycock grabbed hold of his forearm but Johnson seemed to need more support.
Maycock’s dogs, Alfie, 5, and Gus, 1, both leaped in. Alfie swam to the other side of Johnson, who was able to throw his free hand around the dog’s back.
“It gave him something to hang on to,” Maycock said.
Maycock, also of Centerport, said his own near-death experience 37 years ago was not unlike the one he encountered on Sunday.
He said a wave swept him out to sea and that only the bravery of a passer-by and the man’s Labrador retriever saved him.
Johnson was treated at Huntington Hospital for severe hypothermia, Centerport fire Chief Kevin Kustka told the newspaper. Maycock suffered cuts on his hands from the sharp pieces of ice.
“The dogs did not suffer,” Kustka said. “They were able to recover quickly.”
**German convicted of stealing buffet for 60 people**
Tue Feb 27, 9:25 AM ET
BERLIN (Reuters) – A jobless German has been handed a five-month suspended jail term for stealing a buffet for 60 people and eating it with friends, authorities said on Tuesday.
Using a false name, the 46-year-old from the western city of Dortmund ordered the 3,700-euro ($4,890) feast to be sent to the club house of a garden allotment colony.
Shortly after the caterers delivered the food, he called the company to say they had made a mistake and he would return the order. As puzzled club house guests looked on, he loaded the buffet into his car and sped off.
The food was never seen again — but the man was recognized one day by one of the club house guests, who told the police, the presiding judge at the court in Dortmund said.
“The man said he wanted to treat his friends to something special,” said Judge Gerhard Breuer. “I told him his story would make a good movie.” As well as receiving a suspended jail term, the man must repay his debt to the caterer, the court ruled.

Pretty cool idea! Amazing what some people will come up with. Personally, I really like the commercial that was on over football season with the rubber floors. The beers just bouced to each person. Athough, I did feel sorry for the dog! Had to laugh like heck anyway. Pretty good commercial!
At least Duke made the news for something besides its maligned Lacrosse team!

Hello, Ivory Bill!
lima bean, green bean, jelly bean, how ya bean? we missed you!
Hiya, CR…. I have been working (I work from 6:30 pm ’til 6:30am). A lot of people have been out sick, so I have been working extra days. I sleep during the day, of course. After the zzzzzzzzzzzzzz’s, my next duty is to pay “attentions” to Joshie, and I have just been too tired to surf/post.
Thanks to those who have asked about me. It’s nice to know I was missed.
Great – again! π

I would like to thank everyone who took the time to send me an e-mail. It is a rare community indeed that would take the time to lift the spirits of someone who they only know in the cyber world. Did you hear this breaking news?
The Dow Jones industrial average has fallen more
than 500 points as Wall Street succumbs to a global market decline.
The plunge came as the U.S. markets joined a global decline, prompted by concern that the U.S. and Chinese economies are cooling and that stock prices have become over-inflated.
Since I work in a financial services office, this has been a nightmare day for us! I guess it had to happen sometime. What goes up, must come down.
Having worked in the Financial Industry, you have to expect that there will be days like this 500 pt drop. They call it a correction. Also, if you leave your money where it is instead of panicing and taking it out, you could regain your money within six months instead 18 months according to a report on CBS back in 1991 or was it 1987 (I forget) when they had a big drop then.

I love ‘Heroes’! It’s a great show!

Hey,
Guess what I saw this afternoon!? A bluebird! Isn’t that exciting?? That gave me a big smile!
Hi Bumblebee,
We have bluebirds, too. I’ve been seeing some in our pasture for the last couple weeks. We have a family of them every year, that makes a nest in our bluebird boxes. We encourage them to stay around. They eat lots of mosquitoes. I think they are so cute, such a pretty blue with the red-ish spot on their chest.
Hello Renee!
That is really neat that you have bluebirds too and that you’ve seen them already. I’m not sure how long these birds have been here, but today I was talking to my daughter and I saw a flash of blue go past the window. My sister gave me a bird feeder for Christmas and I am thankful I haven’t hung it yet. Since I have been having back problems and with the bad weather and ice, I wouldn’t have been able to fill it each day and would have felt really guilty!!!
In case you couldn’t tell by my handle, birds are up there with cats as far as I am concerned. Here in SE Texas, we just see bluebirds passing through. Having grown up (some say that’s debatable) in the Carolinas, I looked forward to bluebirds every spring. More than that groundhog, their arrival meant winter was over.
How very fortunate you are to have those lovely feathered friends to look at and listen to. I hope you have a lovely spring!
Awwww, you’re so sweet Ivory Bill!! What are your favorite birds??
I grew up in NJ and since I moved to Pa. I have seen many different birds. Really interesting!! We even have those large Pileated woodpeckers and are they ever LOUD!! So cool! I saw a Common Loon here too years ago. I just love them, especially their call!!
I have always wanted to vacation in the Carolinas. Cool that you grew up there. π
You have them too. Aren’t Blue’s the best. Sweet, beautiful, non-aggressive and the best song. I have a pair that lives up the hill. I feed them meal worms and a peanut butter/raisin/corn meal/sunflower seed mixture I make. They have been successfully fledging 2-3 broods each summer. The male BB actually sits on the birdbath near my patio and talks to me if I’m late getting the meal worms out to them in the morning. I can actually stand less than 2 feet from their feeding spot and talk to them while they eat. Keep hoping I’ll get one to land on my hand someday.
Since I moved to this area I have added quite a few birds to my life list. Always so exciting to spot a bird I’ve never seen before.
My biggest challenge is to keep my feral colony from attacking the birds. I feed my ferals really well but they still insist on stalking birds. When the BB’s are around I have to stay outside and stand guard, or they would be on the cats dinner plate.
Kittenmaster: why is it that when I click on post reply my browser kicks me out of the reply window and back to the posting. Just now it went even further and kicked me complete out of today’s kitten. Did I go over my posting quota? π
Hi Karin,
It has been doing that to me for most of the day. Sometimes if I wait, it will go back to the post and I just have to hit reply again. Strange….
I don’t know – there is certainly no quota. Unless behaviour is consistent (i.e. it happens 100% of the time) then it not possible to isolate the issue and therefore near impossible to fix.
I’ve been hanging out here for about a month..looking at all the gorgeous kitties, like Codie, following the leads to catster, drooling over recipes, praying for lost cats and bad backs. I really enjoy everyone’s company and thought I ought to say “hi”. I have three rescued cats..one little feral kitty with a really strange story. I’ll soon have a new one because a friend’s husband has decided cats are too filthy to be around when their child is born, so the pet cat is disposable. All my cats, dogs, and yes, hamsters were disposable, but not to me. Glad I found some kindred souls….later,Sue
Welcome, Sue! I’m so glad you spoke up! Bless you for recusing that kitty from that sad soul. I had two cats when my baby was born and I wouldn’t have given them up any more than I would have given up my daughter.
Welcome Sue, so glad you rescued the poor little critters.
Glad you’ve joined us, Sue–in which part of the world are you?
Welcome Sue,
Bless you for rescuing the kitties! Great story, thanks for sharing. Glad you have joined us!!
Sue, welcome to the group. Glad you are saving the new kitty. No animal is disposable. Glad you’ve had fun watching us. Join us again soon!
Hi everyone!,
I have been collecting locations of all the posters on TDK for the last couple months. Chester got me interested in it. I tried to keep a record of most everybody in case he needed some more info. I know how much he wanted to compile this list but he hasn’t been able. So, I thought I would do one in his honor. Here goes to the best of my ability.

It was interesting to do. TDK is a great site and it reaches around the globe! It just shows there are great kittens/cats around the world.
Once again, Texas is tops!
Before I fell in love with and married a Texan, I thought Texas pride was just arrogance. Then I came here and learned, to quote an unlikely source, FSU head football coach Bobby Bowden, “It ain’t braggin’ if you can back it up”!
Luv ya! I’m gonna go home and cuddly my lazy Linus and loco Lucy!
I thought it was Kid Rock that said that….although Bobby Bowden would back it better- GO NOLES!!!

*I* thought it was Muhammad Ali.
It was.
I think tons of people have been quoted as saying that—I always heard that Dizzy Dean was first quoted as saying it in the 30s…

Wow! Thanks, Renee! That was a lot of work!
Good job Renee! Keep the list handy. I have a feeling we will be adding to it alot!
